    Just want to clarify something. The ranking faq says, for example, demotion in 2-4dan class is either 5 straight losses or -7 points. This means then that getting a win (+1) does not change your loss points. So, that if you lose 3 straight as 2dan(-3), then win 2(+2), and lose 4 more in a row(-4), you get demoted, not end up with -5 and same rank, right? Win points and loss points are totally seperate and not on a balance scale, as it were.

    If I follow your logic, then the following scenario should be possible in a new 2-dan vs 2-dan match:

    1P wins: 1P = +1/0, 2P = 0/-1
    2P wins: 1P = +1/-1, 2P = +1/-1
    1P wins: 1P = +2/-1, 2P = +1/-2 (Ranking Match for 1P)
    2P wins: 1P = +2/-2, 2P = +2/-2 (Ranking Match for 1P, again)
    1P wins: 1P = +3/-2, 2P = +2/-2 (1P is promoted)

    Now I don't think that's the way it works, or have you confirmed this personally?

    In the group that I play with, when we've had PS2 ranking matches, we've always kept a mental count of who was up or down in points and it always seemed to work out. We've had scenarios where there'd be a lot of 1P or 2P taking turns on the win (like my scenario above), and nobody's rank budged.

    So that's why I'm pretty sure there is no separation of win/loss points, and in the example you described, I don't think you should get demoted, but you should be at -5.

    I have a question...Ive been at 8th dan for the longest time now....and I cant seem to get my rank up...Ive conquered the last aracde....does this mean Ihave to hang at the arcades where the 8th dan people are for now?

    Hey Myke. Sorry for the confusion, but I was asking a question, not making a statement. I reread my post and it does seem as though I was trying to state fact, but it was really an inquiry. After having read the faq again and worked out some scenarios, I voluntarily shut my cakehole. I don't know what I was thinking.     good question and yes, your points do reset after a promotion (and demotion). I will add this to the FAQ in a bit.

    the first paragraph of the Dan Rankings section answers your question. If you're at 8-dan then there's no sense hanging around an arcade with no 8-dans, is there?

    weird thing is myke i was playing vs the other day. I just got promoted to 1st dan played 2 1st dan players and i ranked up and i haven't even touched the quest mode.

    I got that same feeling when i was playing quest mode aswell

    What's so weird about ranking up in versus mode? Any place you can challenge an opponent with the same rank (Quest, Versus) means you're eligible for ranking matches.

    isn't it that you had to beat 5 1st dans to level up. I only played 2 i'm pretty sure of it.

    That's what was weird unless they changed it in evo...

    It is mentioned in the FAQ, please read it more carefully:

    To get a Promotion when you're at Hero rank:

    15 straight wins or +15 pts against Teisei / Guardian ranked opponents
