Does anybody know whether movements in VF5 are still hand animated or was motion capture used. If motion capture was used does anybody know who did them?

or for that matter which graphics engine was used? Tekken 5 uses Endorphin 3d modeler from Natural Motion Ltd. Does anybody know if VF5 used Endorphin?

At one time to rumor was Sega was using Softimage in the production of VF5 graphics. Does anyone know if this is still or (ever was) the case.

I know this is a fairly technical question but do you know or know anyone that knows whther they used motion capture libraries with softimage or was everything hand animated, or some combination.

I'm curious because some of the moves are spot on (as they would be executed by humans) others are not quite recognizable.

They used both for VF4; I'd imagine the same with VF5.

I heard once from somewhere that at one point
DOA and VF shared the same fighting engine and
graphics software was that ever true?

I believed Itagaki asked for Sega's permission to use the VF graphics engine for DOA. The fighting engine thing is probably false but DOA was a slow fighter(like VF) back then so it could be true. He said he hasn't had contact with them ever since or something like that!

I remember the very first footage of vf5 that was released by Sega it was almost certainly mocap. Doesnt look much like it did then tho. I expect they used both mocap and hand drawn. Maybe back then to make it look really good for the announcement of vf5 they invested in their own motion cap. Dunno. Any reason why you're interested?

I'm just curious. Jet Li did his own motion capture for his PS2 game. In an interview about that game he said that it was the first time that true kung fu was captured in a video game. So I'm
naturally curious about any mocap that's in VF. How much was hand animated, what was mo capped and if there was mocap how much of it was free style and improvised, as opposed to classical.

Its one of my interests. Just like the madden series is a pretty decent simulation of football. I'm interested in decent simulations of the martial arts.

The mocap stuff is very interesting.....

most of the moves are motion captured. and i think SEGA stoped using softimage. the last VF that used softimage was VF4. they are using MAYA right now. and for the engine, AM2 been always creating there own.

Were mocaps from a motion capture libraries available to MAYA or was the motion capture done just for VF5?

After I played the virtual fighter world tournament finals in quest mode there were credits to the screen. And a short movie. I thought it was going to save that movie and credits for replay in the VF.TV mode. So that I could check out if there was a motion capture team. But no luck.

If the motion capture was done just for VF5 it would be kewl to get an interview with the team to see what their goals and approach was..

Softimage say: "Get the 3D animation software used by some of the leading digital production studios, including Animal Logic (Happy Feet), Blur (Gentlemen's Duel), SEGA (Virtua Fighter 5) and The Mill (PSP Orange)" So if they are using Maya then it must be as well as Softimage.

Yea I saw the softimage reference somewhere also.

But the graphics pipelines can be complicated. Perhaps Sega is using Maya for some parts of production and Softimage for other parts.

Hopefully someone will be able to clarify this. I appreciate the VF series as a gamer and from the simulation point of view.

Very curious about the particulars of the mocap vs hand animation piece.

Also curious as to whether Sega is Windows or Unix/Linux development environment.

    Anybody know??
