Virtua Fencer!? Weapons in VIrtua Fighter.

I think the Virtua Fighter online topic has been beaten to death, but I wonder what you would think if the next Virtua Fighter added weapons.

Yeah, there's Soul Calibur, which is great, but it's kind of fake and unrealistic. Where VF is closer to a sim than any other fighting game, it would be nice some nice weapon fighting based in reality.

Then again, there could be drawbacks. If they added weapons that could potentially force them to take away some of the depth with the hand-to-hand part of the game (I wouldn't want them to completely replace hand-to-hand with weapons). Also, AM2 could be accused of copying Soul Calibur and lose credibility and slip into further oblivion amongst the more popular fighters.

So it's a double-edged sword (shitty pun intended).

This was inspired by the fact that Lei's trident and Kage's katanas look very tempting.

No, VF is hand to hand and should remain that way.

There *is* sort of a void where the "sim-style weapon-based fghting games" should be. I would love to see AM2 tackle something like that... and no, as much as i like the game, FV doesn't count... i don't think beating someone over the head with a skateboard counts as a "sim"...

Yeah I'd love to see AM2 do it. I could spend hours thinking of the many tight things they could do with weapons.

Just for the fun of it, if they did VF weapons, I think it'd be...

Akira - war mace or bo
Kage - Katana, and for certain moves, the suicide blade
    Lau - chinese broadsword
    Lei - Trident
    Jeff - war hammer or
    Pai - chinese longsword
    Shun - Tai-Chi sword
    Vanessa - nightstick
    Lion - comma blades
    Wolf - tomahawk axe
    Aoi - kendo stick
    Brad - tonfa
    Goh - dagger
    Jacky - kali sticks
    Sarah - sai

It's kind of fun imagining what they could do, even though they likely wont

Lets see how the new virtua fighter RPG works then maybe they'll look at other things. Remember Namco has already gone cross-genre with it's new Nina Adventure game coming out, apparently she is armed wtih everything from guns to swords.

i belive the only thing that separtes "the real thing" from the "sims" is in a real fight when you do a move such as say punch--and then the next time you do it, they look quite different in a real fight, than in a video game. just imagine a person in a real fight doing the same elbow attack at the same speed, and rate. i wish in figting games, there were many different outcomes of the same attack, For Example, when i hit the [P] button, the opponent stutters a bit, a bit later a hit the [P] button, and the opponenet grabs his head,...new animation and so on (there should be atleast 5 different outcomes & animations for a single attack)

ofcourse doing this will be a VERY long, & hard process on the developers side...

    ahhhhhhhhh...me and my philosophies /versus/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I would think about how I would kill the guy who suggested it and made it a reality at AM2's office and the gay horse he rode in on in the most extreme pain I could imagine while stimulating my sadist / dark side to new hights of human cruelty. And after that,.. an apple would hit the spot.

I think there was a somewhat...realistic weapon fighter on PS1 in which a sequel was also released on the system. Can't remember the name...not that great of a game...one or two hit kill...

Bushido Blade. First one was a classic, second sucked, Square is never going to bring it back and if they do it'd probably suck.

Wasn't Kengo actually Bushido Blade 3 ? I haven't played it in a minute. Not a bad game, but gets boring quick against the cpu.

You can never really have a good realistic weapons fighter. The one/two hit kill is pretty much what it is. May be if it was armoured combat with one handed weapons, (e.g., medieval europe), but otherwise, it'll always be the SC variety. VF4E isn't exactly realistic H2H fighting, either.

That said, on a gameplay level, weapons combat does add some interesting value- namely, good range games, big invurnerable hit boxes, and lots of room for fantasy creativity, and I'd not mind something like it.

If anyone is fluent in Japanese, send these weapon ideas to the dude who does the art for http://hiroro.cside.com . I think it would be neat to have a kama wielding Lion in my signature.

    Just being anal: /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Kage - Katana, and for certain moves, the suicide blade ->tanto

Lau - chinese broadsword -> dao

Pai - chinese longsword -> gim

    Shun - Tai-Chi sword -> gim

    Vanessa - nightstick -> tonfa

Lion - comma blades -> ?? i think you mean the deer horn /half moons

Aoi - kendo stick -> bokken

Anyway, I think the weapons that the chars get in the quest mode are rather appropriate. Of course, Vanessa then may be a bit unbalanced. /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

    * Akira does fancy twirly crap with his Bo *
    * Vanessa pulls out her Vulcan*
    * eat 20 mm, top tier biatch!*

By all means, be anal. I wanted to say Wakizashi for the suicide blade. It was eating away at my mind so thanks.

BTW, by comma blades I meant:

(10 minutes later) I swear I saw a picture of em on image.google.com last night but I cant find one now, maybe later

wakizashi is the short sword, i think the traditional seppuku implement is the tanto (the dagger).

    to be clear:

    deer horn/half moons
    - in CTHD, the gov't official wielded these (you know, the one w/ the daughter with the darts)

    dao
    - the preferred weapon of Michelle Yeo in CTHD (western translations call it a "machete").
you usually see these in most kung fu flicks. Hwang's sword in SC.

    gim
    - this would be the Green Destiny in CTHD. Xiang's sword in SC.

    bokken
    - the wooden training sword, e.g., Last Samurai
