So I came from the counter strike school of shooters. I still think its one of if not the best FPS around. I didn't really like many of the modern ones. CoD is retarded with its spray and pray mechanics and usually who ever sees the other person first kills them, which means you just have to camp and be a dick. The maps in CoD help with being a camping dick too with some parts being huge and having brushy cover where its hard to see you.

Halo doesn't suffer from this camp-hide and go seek- style gameplay too much, but I dislike the shield mechanics, and that headshots effectively don't matter unless you're sniping. In fact, some weapons HOME IN on targets, which I find appalling. FPSes are about aiming and understanding weapon mechanics and should at least have a better learning curve than halo.

TF2 isn't bad, but I enjoyed how in CS, if a player is good enough, they can wipe out a whole team. Its difficult to do that in TF2, as its more team based. Still fun, but meh.

Gears of War I thought was a good game, but its for consoles and none of my friends own an XBOX, was hoping for a PC game. Its extremely different from CS or well most FPSes, which is why I respect it. It still has the "One guy kill whole team" principle, and the learning curve is pretty deep because of the movement mechanics and all the weird strategies/weapons you could use.

I'm not familiar with any of the other FPSes around. Whats everyone on VFDC playing now adays?

I don't think anything has topped Quake III for competitive play.

I generally don't like console shooters. Gamepads don't offer the precision that a mouse and keyboard combination does. Therefore, a lot of the time they're built around the concept of your enemies not moving very much. Games like Gears of War and Halo are prime examples.

I bought Quake III Arcade for the 360. I have no idea how you're supposed to play that game with a pad.

There are good single player FPS games out there, but everything is on the PC. FEAR is awesome, though the sequels are meh. Doom is still the best swarm shooter ever made.

While these aren't new, I think they're worth your time.

I played some quake, CS, a lot of Halo and a little bit of battlefield. More often than not though if I was playing an FPS I was playing Unreal.

I liked Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64 as . They were great when I had friends over. Oh, and timesplitters 2. I love a good 'arcadey' FPS on a console. So much fun to be had.

I've been keeping my eye on DayZ, the ARMA II mod. This has to be the pinnacle of zombie shooter experiences easily trumping Left 4 Dead series. Look it up if you haven't heard about it. There's just really nothing else like it in the gaming world.

I'd need to build a new PC. The one I have now is a rig I built around 2003 so it won't play any current shooters.

As far as console shooters I was addicted to playing Max Payne 3 online right before the release of VF5FS. Haven't touched it since though. I feel the same about competitive shooters. Nothing matches the feeling of my faves such as QA3 on PC or Dreamcast. Or Unreal 2K4. All the current console shooters are pretty hit and miss. Notables of course being Battlefield Bad Company 1 or 2 and BF3. But as far as twitch shooters all the ones that have tried lately aren't to good like Nexuiz.

I'm fond of battlefield 3, hardcore, on pc, but I haven't played in a while. Ghost recon is great, like hardcore mode with gadgets. I trend to like high lethality shooters though, but, I prefer them more balanced than COD/ Modern Warfare, where there are one or two "best" weapons which everyone must use (see grenade launchers). Also, while it was neat and novel when it started, I don't like having to grind for level to unlock the abilities and guns to finally get to play the "real game". I'm unlikely to ever "max" my level, and being unable to compete simply because I have less time to waste unlocking crap annoys me. Ghost recon, thankfully, gives you useful gadgets and guns up front, and leveling give more, but not really better, options.

The latter really has come a long way from the bad launch. I was more impressed with it after a while even though I am normally not into FPS games with "realism" elements to them.

I got into the CS:GO Beta as well. I dropped it after a few hours, as a big fan of CS 1.6 I can't believe what they did [IMG]

Gears of War for me, its just so unique there's no game like it, I play CoD sometimes (mostly blops) but it can get boring at times, I'm totally looking forward to Black Ops 2 though and GoW Judgment in 2013 [IMG] I'll probably get Halo 4 too but mostly for the campaign.

Sharp I agree w/ you 100%. In my honest opinion there hasn't been another game like Counter Strike made yet. Seriously, in the FPS world, CS is like VF. It all comes down to player skill and nothing else.

Not a single FPS since then has been able to capture my attention like CS did. I play a few here and there but haven't in a good 6 years at least. Gears of War ain't my thing. CoD is DEFINITELY not my thing.

FPS's these days focus way too much on realism. Games like CS and Quake were good for a reason. You didn't die to some guy hiding in a pile of rubble 80 yards away that not even an Eagle could see. You died because of a bad strategy or lack of skill. So much room for growth in the good ole days of FPSs.

I'm like those die hard SF3: Third Strike fans when they heard about SF3:Online, waiting on my new Counter Strike to revive the scene, and then realizing that it won't [IMG] But I am waiting on CS:GO, just don't have majorly high expectations.

That pretty much sums up my experience with Unreal Tournament 99 edition. But I loved every minute of it.

You won't find games like quake, doom, unreal or CS (proper CS) anymore, yet those games always has a playerbase and there are always rooms for you to jump in (which is why i love pc gaming so much!) so it's not like you'll be dipping out on games like that either.

Just would be nice to have a modern game with that element added in to them.

    CS:GO's problems:

-model-to-map scaling is off, your player model is much larger compared to the size of the map now (i guess this is like CoD)
-the changes to the "classic" maps are weird/superfluous, adding new routes and a shitload of visual clutter to maps that were already fine as they were in 2002
-the muted, boring color scheme makes it hard to see targets, especially at longer ranges
-the weapon models are in the wrong spot on the screen by default and the animations for firing are terribl
-judging where the spread pattern of the weapon is going is much more difficult because the weapon animations are so stiff and the bullet marks on surfaces are too hard to see, so from the get-go it feels a lot more random as to where to place your shot (even if it technically isn't)

They tried really hard to combine CS 1.6 and CS:S, jazz it up a bit with a more modern (read: CoD) sense of aesthetics, but it just isn't what appealed to me about the old game anymore. New players will write it off as generic (because, on the surface, it very much is) and best case scenario old players are going to be divided about it like they were with CS:S, but I think it's more likely that it will have nowhere near the popularity of the other two.

EDIT: for those looking for a revival of arena FPS, Warsow 1.0 just came out a few days ago: http://www.warsow.net . It's completely free too.

That's disappointing to hear. I do have a small amount of faith for them to fix it though.

    CS 1.5 / 1.6 for life [IMG]

CS source only cuz CS1.5/1.6 isn't ported for the MAC [IMG]. I grew up on that old school CS at internet cafes. I get down on some L4D2 and TF2 also (medic or bust).

Alright Ghost Recon and Tribes ascend seem to be pretty great and are new. Wait it looks like Ghost recon online is still in development?

I tried blacklight retribution, I thought it was pretty damn good but there are some aspects that are kind of buggy like the party mode not working with friends. Its a LITTLE too easy too but over all enjoyable.

Looks like you guys are fans of CS and Quake. I knew VFDC would have good taste ;D

I've heard of DayZ and it seems very very fun.

I'll try Warsow and BF too.
