i've always thought reaction speed plays a huge factor in how good a VF player you are or can aspire to be.

here's a really fast and simple test from human-benchmark with stats so you can compare yourself against thousands of others:

    http://www.humanbenchmark.com/tests/reactiontime/index.php

i got a pathetic 221ms average which sort of explains why i'll never be a truly great VF player. the problem with raw reaction speed is you can't really improve it by much.

will be interesting to hear what other people on the vf.com community scored on the test, please be honest and post up your averages.

I got 212 out of 5 clicks average.

While good reflexes are very useful, they are not the only thing making a great player.

I scored a pitiful 284. I'll try it again later when I've been awake for more than 5 minutes.

i find it amazing the site average claims to be 210ms.....that seems very quick indeed.

Did you know that there were studies done that showed that people with fast reaction times tended to be premature ejaculators.

I think I remember reading recently that the fastest time it takes for a neural impulse to go from eye to brain then brain to muscle is about 100ms (it's scientifically impossible to be faster), so the average of 210 seems somewhat fast.

Also, after doing the test again, I got a slightly better 254. Meh, it's passable.

and my second attempt I scored 197.1 average on 25 tries
While this explains why I can pull of decent reversals, it still doesn't actually make me a good VF player heh

Edit: I read the FAQ and someone posted "look through the corner of your eye, but not actually the corner; raise your eyes above your monitor but focus on the red box"
This actually gave me an average of 170, even one time getting me 100 on one click. Crazy but true.

I do this when playing ping pong actually - i try to focus on my adversary's face instead of the ball. It weirds them out plus i kinda hit the ball more often too - win win /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

...that doesn't change the fact my best scores tend to average out near 380 though /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

I scored an average of 173.4 on the first 5 clicks.
I hope it means that it's good /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I kept clicking until 25 clicks and I got 175.04.

Hey, you know, that actually might be true. Premature ejaculation would be stretching it, but I am no "long distance runner" if you know what I mean.

You can improve this by doing things that require great reflexes /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I also remember a documentary od Discovery about marial arts. Most of you probably know it. The guy training TKD had so good relfexes, that he could start acting (kicking, punching) when a normal person would still be in an eye-brain phase.

you can train your awareness to the visual cues and your yomi so it appears that you react quicker, but afaik reflexes do get slower as you age : /
With a slow game like vf5 reflexes don't play that big of a part unless your really slow to be honest.

VF may be "slow" but you still only have about .250 to see e.g. a counter hit jab and act appropriately. Choice-based reaction time is a lot slower than pure reaction time, too.

Chances are if you are good at hit-checking, you are actually either listening for the hit instead of watching, or are reacting to something other than the flash (opponent's character twitching before the hit).

VF5 is far from a slow game. Honestly I think its a minority of people that play the game that can see if every hit is guarded, normal hit or countered especially when they get interrupted during offense. Also, theres a limited amount of people that can block 20 frame moves consistently on reaction if the opponent is mixing it up properly. Personally, I think vf requires more reaction that street fighter where its impossible to block sweeps on reaction anyways.
