Congratulations to Yu Suzuki! Yu Suzuki will be awarded the Pioneer Award at the 2011 Game Developers Conference at San Francisco, California, March 2, 2011. From the Game Developers Conference website, the "Pioneer Award (formerly known as the First Penguin Award) celebrates those individuals who developed a breakthrough technology, game concept, or gameplay design at a crucial juncture in video game history - paving the way for the myriads who followed them." An earlier news report of the award can be read from 1up.com.

In addition to the award, Yu Suzuki will be presenting a lecture, "Yu Suzuki's Gameworks: A Career Retrospective," at the conference.

you have no idea how angry i am right now; i didn't find out about this until just now, and the very day i'm heading up to the city to boot.

if the passes weren't fifteen fucking hundred dollars, i would cancel my plans to meet my favorite game designer. BUT NO [IMG]

I think Yu Suzuki is an icon of the videogame world,

Him and Miyamoto will be remembered as the pioneers of game creation, both in their unique way. YS was a genious when it came to break through a new medium, few others even had the imagination, let alone the balls, to create such game concepts.

Those were good times, Sega being top in arcade development and new boards costing a fortune. Who knows what the future holds.

PS: my money is on mizuchi to get this kind of award in the future, depending on how good Child of Eden turns out to be.

Supposedly this was shown to the audience when Yu Suzuki received the Pioneer Award: How Shenmue was meant to end with Yu Suzuki.

I know this is old, but:
Suzuki don't deserve jack-shit until he finishes Shenmue. Only achievers deserve achievement awards, and people with incomplete work aren't achievers.
