Dojo Mail
Occasionally, I get mail from readers requesting clarification or help
on certain issues with Lion. Usually, a problem that a Lion player faces
is something that other Lion players are probably also facing or have
overcome. So, I have decided to publish some of the e-mail discussions
that I think are relevant to other people, and I will also post e-mails
that I myself am unable to clarify in the hopes that someone who knows
Lion better can and will.

First, thx for the updated info on Lion in Dojo! Excellent Jeff! Bravo!
Super writing! As you'll recall, BigCat wrote back in '79: "Attacks are
focused around (1) doing LOTS of damage (ie. fitting in a pounce) and
(2) knocking your opponent down and into a good Oki position." Good Oki
position would have to be at a slight angle and superb would be head towards
face down (huah!). d/f+K+G ducks under high rising attacks, hits low and
sometimes can interrupt low rising attacks too.

Thanks for writing in, nycat!

Hello
I love the work you have done in your dojo. Think its informative and
real good for beginners. I just started playing VF4 and I think its like
the coolest game around. Use Lion almost all the time.
I find I have trouble using the strategies and moves listed in your dojo
though. shall list down the problems I encountered below. Hope you can
assist! :)
Basically the main problems I have with using Lion would be in the short
range game, dodging, and okizeme.
1) I have problems using Lion at close range. Especially when playing
human players. I often use LP (low punch) and usually immediately after
that i get hit with a quick elbow or something that hits middle. Most
of the time when I try to execute the Uppercut or Flip Throw after the
LP i get whacked before anything happens. In a nutshell, after executing
a punch I usually get hit by the oppponent's quick punch before I get
a chance to execute anything.
2) How to dodge ? Sometimes when I seem to successfully dodge a move
it sorta tracks me down and still hits me. In the occasion when I do dodge
it successfully (not get hit) what should I do to take advantage ?
3) How to execute the stuff you mentioned in the okizeme section ? For
example. After a Flip Throw (D, f+P+G) there should be a pounce opportunity.
I tried the b,f+K+G > pounce move but the first move never manages to
connect. It comes out way too slow. Am I doing it wrongly ? Also, whats
TR and QR ? How do I execute them ?
How do I develop an effective close game ? I'm ok with the long range
stuff. But when I try using the close range game I find that I lose to
any one (esp. Jackys) who just button mashes. PPP or KK and I get whacked.
Is it my timing ???
Hope to hear from you soon
thanks very much

Hey Anonymous,
1) The reason an elbow is beating everything you throw after an LP
is because your LP was blocked and your opponent had the reflexes to recognize
your disadvantage and attack you for it. If you notice this happening
a lot, dodge after the LP. It's really only when your LP hits that you
have the freedom to really attack.
Actually, I always thought that even if the LP was blocked the D,f+P
would beat an elbow, but it could be that all my opponents have just been
slow. I wish I could try it out on the PS2, but my damn machine just got
fried. Anyone out there willing to do a quick test for us?
For close range, stick to b,f+P+K,P,P; d/f+P,P; b/d+K; LP. Or if you're
uncomfortable at close range, b+P+K+G to get out.
2) Some moves just naturally have tracking abilities, so you can't
dodge everything successfully. Another thing to keep in mind is that if
you dodge before the opponent actually attacks, you'll get an "unsuccessful"
dodge, basically you just sort of take a little step in or out of the
screen. It's easy for the opponent to hit you out of it when this happens.
If the move is dodgeable, and if you dodge only after the opponent executes
the move, you should get this really big dodge, or "MC" or "successful"
dodge. After such a dodge, you can retaliate with CD,f+P; CD > throw;
or b,b+K if the attack's recovery is long enough.
3) You're inputting the b,f+K+G too late.
