what i think / youre all gonna hate me. lol

the website says its from naomi2 (the arcade board.) either they made the n2 version lamer to facilitate an easy port to ps2 OR this is ps2. it looks good uh... i guess. it could be a lot better. flame me all you want.
this is what i predicted in that other flame thread, btw; low quality textures, etc.

    it should look better

but i guess we're so firmly into the 128 bit era...we just expect so much more...

it takes more than just lighting nad textures to wow us now

Personally I think some of the levels look friggin incredible and the character models are superb... I think the areas the game will really wow us are in the Physics and Animation departments..

Unlike many years ago when Model 3 was the king of the hill and Virtua Fighter III was the BEST looking arcade game for a VERY long time,,, Virtua Fighter IV won't have that luxury.

Thanks to the rapid advancements in the 128-bit era, NO game will be able to remain the dominant graphics work horse for a substantial amount of time before something better comes along. Nowadays, something better is always just right around the corner.. Virtua Fighter III didn't have to contend with that cause something better was a LOOOONG ways away.

Wolf -- EXCELLENT! A big improvement. He looks mean and intimidating now, as opposed to bulky and stupid from the past.

Kage -- A little clunky looking, but still very cool.

Lau -- The dude looks really mean and totally different from the past.

Akira -- Getting there, but needs work.

Pai -- Didn't like her at all.

Is it just the screen grabs or was anti-aliasing not turned on??

It's probably just pics of the Playstation II version, you know how the PS2 loves to promote "Jaggies" <grins>

Oh yeah - I wish the aliasing didn't exist in those pics. And to be honest, I think that's the only thing I find to be 'under par'.

The character designs are good, imo. I like Kage's samurai armour costume and I really like Aoi's new duds. She looks great. I had originally liked the Naomi2 Pai pic - but now she looks like she's back to ANOREXIC PAI. Man, they need to put some meat on those bones.

I have feeling that those pics were PS2. And *if* that's the case, AM2 have done a great job at texturing the game.

These are the first pics - we can only expect things to get better from here.

I think Aoi, Wolf, and Lau looked great. Kage was good, but I think there is too much going on with that costume. Pai was marginal, and what the hell did they do to Akira? He looks like an over-weight dork. I'm really disappointed with Akira. Damn, can't he get rid of the gi already?

    cheers,

    Yes, Aoi looks much better.

Not as large a graphics step as vf3 was from vf2, but it's enough for me. It's how the game plays that's the [most] important part, anyway.

Something not quite right about Pai...in some pics she looks like she's in her 20's, and in others, she looks like a pre-teen. That, and i'd swear her hands are longer than the distance from her chin to the top of her hat.

Still, young or old, male or female...all of the characters' facial details are very nice (cripes...look at lau). Beautiful costumes and backgrounds too.

lol...I like the gut on Akira...what screams "reality" louder than a beer belly?

So far, I like most of what I'm seeing. Just overall looks pretty good to me. However, the thing I really don't like all that much are the wrinkles on Lau. Not because they are there, but because of the way they are done. They'll probably look good in motion, but on stills it kinda looks like makeup. Naturally, it's just a texture map and not a ton of polygons shifting accordingly to create wrinkles... But I just feel that flat wrinkles look messed. I fear for what Shun will look like. This is the same gripe I had with Shenmue's elderly characters in the game. The kind of wrinkles you find in a high-school drama class.

Have you noticed all of the stages we have seen so far are flat?

Re: what i think / youre all gonna hate me. lol

I have mixed feelings so far.

Akira: looks good I think, but from the side his head looks too long/wide; and his gi seems to float a little around his shoulders, but I like the way it bunches up above his belt at the back, it looks soft and real.

Lau: looks cool, face looks cool, but I know what chanchai is talking about with the shen mue rubber faces.

Pai: looks good but I think this costume looks really boring and plain. I was hoping for tons of embroidery of cranes/phoenixes; the design on her back looks too simple and shitty compared to earlier versions.

Kage: shredder from teenage mutant ninja turtles. I like the idea, but it seems cheesey in this execution

Wolf: face is so-so, but overall too muscled out for me. I like bulk, but not this body builder look. the outfit is lame to me, i like the old simple look with the wrestling tennis shoes. now it feels like they're trying to compete with king (leggers, gloves)

Aoi: looks good but again, why all the gloves, bracelets etc?

I also noticed no undulation (snowy rooftop looks like it has a LITTLE in one shot), but the movement through the snow looks cool. What I noticed most about the BG's is the low res/dull textures, espescially on the lau/pai pagodas and the snowy castle walls. To me, the cut stone walls in kage's stage on the DC looks like individual rocks, as do the stones on lau's stage floor. these textures look a little flat to me, but the floors do look good.

    Pai's hands look really great.

I want to see it in motion. I remember thinking VF3 looked strange/shitty at first, so we'll have to see.
