Went down to the local Best Buy to view the demo. All I have to say is WOW.

I was impressed... They had the Samsung tv and the movie playing was quite amazing. Cool thing about the Samsung is that it can upconvert 3D, which would definetly make VF a interesting game.

Anyway, I'm waiting for the Panasonic version since the quality is suppose to be even better. Unfortunately you cant upconvert a 2d signal to 3D.

Here's is a cool video about the 2 TVs...does anyone want to buy a 65in. DLP tv? [IMG]

Why won’t we see the 3-D Blu-ray right away?

Cameron: There just aren’t that many players and screens yet. We have more of a long-term strategy, in that area. But, I think it would be a shame to hold back the Blu-ray when people want it now, and I love it. I think it’s a great format. I would recommend that, if people are thinking of buying a Blu-ray player around this time, make sure you get one that’s 3-D compatible because you’re going to want it.

There’s no significant cost difference to buy one that’s 3-D enabled, at least in some of the sets. The Panasonic set that uses the passive glasses, or Real D glasses essentially, has a little bit more of an up charge because of the cost of putting this polarizing film on the surface of the screen. But, the other sets that use the active glasses have no significant additional cost in manufacturing because it’s really just in the chip set that drives the image. I don’t know exactly what all the price points are. I think most of them are up in the $1,500 to $2,500 range, just in size. If you’re going to go 3-D, go big.[/size] Get the biggest set you can, and then sit as close as you can stand. That’s my advice. Get the coffee table out of the way and slide the couch over, right in front of the TV.

You’ve made it clear that you’re not a fan of the conversion from 2-D to 3-D. Can you explain why?

Cameron: Well, it’s not a blanket statement. We’re converting Titanic, but we’re doing it right. What I’m not a fan of is a rushed or slap-dashed conversion that’s not done right. And, I’m certainly not a fan of conversion when you could shoot the movie in 3-D.

Do you think more movies will be done through conversion for the cost savings, even if it’s lesser quality?

Cameron: I don’t know. How much quality do people want? The problem is that these decisions should be made my filmmakers. They shouldn’t be made by studios. If it’s up to studios, they’re going to sacrifice quality for lower cost. Is that the right answer? Is that the principle on which movies are made by filmmakers? They don’t get the cheapest lens. They don’t get the cheapest camera. They get the one that does the right job and that satisfies their aesthetic requirements. If it was up to the studio, everything would be shot with a camcorder.

The decisions need to be made by filmmakers. Right now, they’re being made by studios because all the filmmakers hung back and said, “Well, let’s go see if Cameron hangs himself. Then we can forget about this 3-D thing, and roll over and go back to sleep.” That didn’t happen, so now they’ve gotta go, “Oh, fuck, maybe I have to think about doing a movie in 3-D,” as opposed to what should have happened. They should have been pounding on the gates of the studios, saying, “We want to make movies in 3-D. It looks cool. It’s a new art form. Let’s go. Give us the money.” That didn’t happen, so now they’re paying the price, which is the studio telling them to make their movies in 3-D and they’re caught with their pants down.

It is not necessary to buy a 3D-set this year. Until Avatar 3D blu-ray comes out, I don't see any software is deserved to be 3D format.

I saw Samsung C7000 series last weekend. Most blu-ray movies are 2.35:1, so I don't think 46" is big enough to show you the whole 3D. That's why Avatar is filmed by 16:9!!(I'll upload some videos once I get the 2D blu-ray, hopefully these couple days)

Due to my experience, if you get at least 80" for 3D movies then don't waste your money on it. Go get a 3D projector next year, that's the only way~~

I actually own a Samsung 67" DLP thats 3D ready. The biggest problem I've had is finding the glasses/receiver for it (as they've been out-of-stock for about 18 months). Seems like Samsung is starting to make new glasses though, so we might finally be able to get the 3d.

No one asked for 3D movies and games until Avatar came out. I hate this top-down push for brand new tech that still requires goofy ass goggles. HDTVs still haven't proliferated all the way, and it seems like only nerds/games/techies like us know how to use HDMI, etc. to get HD video.

I don't think I'm ever going to get on board with 3D viewing; Jaws 3Ds failure in my early years has had a long lasting impression on me.

My other major prejudices of 3D TV technology come from the compromise of either wearing glasses, or having a poor 3D experience based on where you sit relative to the screen(not contrast ratio). But my most entrenched hostility to the technology is very rudimentary.

I'm not a fan of using any technology that works by tricking my basic sensory skills.

Yes surround sound or virtual surround might equally qualify; however the actual sound wave is required to occupy the position(or bounce from the position) in the room it is trying to recreate, allowing my sense of hearing to do its' job naturally.

By contrast 3D TV doesn't try to place a bounced lighting wave in the room to suggest a shark is coming 2inchs from my face, but instead is messing with what the eye actually receives by means of advanced filtering.

If studied, 3Dtv might actually damage the basic sense of human depth perception over a prolonged period of use; or at least that is my main worry.

Thinking about all the dangerous tasks we do very safely, courtesy of a highly developed sense of danger through depth perception.

I actually still like the ability to see a 3D representation on a 2D canvas, while subconsciously remaining detached by my depth perception of the space between me and the screen.

My 3Dtv prediction is that cooking accidents with knives will increase(cut fingers), car accidents will increase and accidents involving people stepping off ladders will increase.

But who knows, maybe it was a great idea from the 1960s.
I actually think the reason it is being pushed again, all boils down to combating people who pirate or torrent films.

To me if I was to buy it this year it would be more for the 3 DirecTV 3d Channels. It already announced that the World Cup and the MLB All Star game will all be in 3D this year on DirecTV.

I to was going to take the wait and see approach, but the Samsung Demo changed that opinion. Go to a Best Buy and check it out for yourself. Warning though... make sure you ask about it if you don't see one. These demos are somewhat new and in my case they had to pull the glasses from behind the case.

problem is you won't be able to experience true 3D HD. I already heard that ghosting is a big issue for the older 3D ready TVs

I did it last weekend and it was playing some CG movie "Aliens VS #@". The quality was better than I expected but the size was too small. That's why I focus on "watching blu-ray".
The 3D glasses are comfortable even I'm wearing my own glasses already, but I only used about 5 mins.

HDMI1.3 supports to 3D 1080i, and that's exactly what SONY trying to upgrade PS3.

Fair point about the World Cup, but given that FIFA don't even believe, or see the benefits of 2D goal line technology; broadcasting it in 3D HD is the last thing they should be doing.

Now, we can have a controversial goal that wasn't, or legitimate goal that isn't given, and watch it in 3D.

Brian I checked out the panasonic 3DTV last week at a bestbuy in NYC (62nd street & broadway) and was completely sold on it. I also tried the samsung tv and really it's a huge pile of shit compared to the panasonic tv. While I did appreciate how bright the picture was on the samsung tv, the 3D was just terrible. It felt like I was watching a 3D movie from the late 80's / early 90's where you had to wear those red and blue paper glasses. Really at times I thought I could see the image flickering.

I thought the glasses on the panasonic tv was much more comfortable especially since I wear glasses. They fit right over my glasses very nicely and note that the samsung tv does not come with a pair of glasses, but the panasonic tv does according to the bestbuy sales rep I spoke too.

The only thing about this whole 3D thing I don't like is the fact that you have to now purchase a 3D ready bluray player. Personally I think current bluray players can support this 3D format through a simple firmware upgrade, but I'm sure to milk a few hundred bucks out of consumer they won't release any firmware upgrades. I know sony plans to make the PS3 3D ready via a firmware upgrade, so I'll most likely be waiting for this instead of buying an additional bluray player.

The price for the Panasonic 50" tv here would run me roughly 3k after taxes, which I think is really not all that bad when you look at what your getting. It's still to early to buy, but I'm pretty sure when the time is right (come on ps3 firmware upgrade) and I can purchase one I definitely will.

Man, porn in HD is terrifying enough, that mention of 3D HD porn is probably going to scar me for life.

The next big thing in porn isn't 3D at all...it's interactive devices. So you'd plug in a USB device to your PC/PS3/360 and pop in a movie and 'interact' with the device while watching the movie. Interactive porn will trump 3D porn. I can't wait for some porno company to try licensing that stuff for the PS3/360 and get denied.

Wait till the FALL to get a 3D ready TV. And stay away from SAMSUNG, I repeat, stay away from those TV's made by Samsung. The Panny's is were is at, and the black levels on that TV is on par with the KURO, if not better.
