This is a rumor in Japan about VF5.

VF5 is coming out in 2003 winter.
Lau dies due to his sickness and shun dies from natural causes.
Lei fei learns new moves(Lau's), and new characters are added.

I know it's just a rumor(or maaaybe not?), but it sounds pretty cool(no offense to lau and shun users.)

do you guys think that rumor has any realistic value to listen to?

i call bullshit, because evo is still pretty recent. Sega will develop the next VF on new hardware which still hasnt been announced yet. Also if you look at the typical cycle of VF games, its usually around 3-4 years till the next one.

yes i know, but it's just a rumor..
but you say that it takes 3~4 years?
it took only like 1 year or something or little over for Evo to come out after VF4.
and because of the VF users are greatly increasing in Japan, Sega may consider a new sequel..
    meh.. i dont know..

well evo wasnt a true sequel, and to my knowledge VFs always been pretty popular in japan just not anywhere else in the world till somewhat recently. I rather have a quality game than a rushed game because of "user base" just look what happened with tekken 4.

oh, and even though the story is that leifei is trying to steal laus style. I cant see leifei using Koen' ken, also might make leifei cheap =P.

Yeup, bullshit. Which Japanese person told you that? I've been hitting the arcades recently, and have heard no such rumor.

I think you can bet that
1: It will likely be Summer 2004 at the eariest until we see VF5 (that'd be 2 years after Evo)
2: It will likely be on new hardware
3: You will not hear any rumors about it until about a month (at month) before release
4: You will likely not see two popular characters get killed off.

I have read rumors of VF5 on some italian and I think russian sites a little while back, but most of them are just basing assumptions on a comment from Yu that he is working on a new fighting game. I hope they are referring to his weapons-based fighting game that he wants to do. I am just drooling at the potential for a weapons-based fighter with similar gameplay stylings to VF. Soul Calibur needs some competition. We'll find out within the next couple days if anything is really being worked on that has potential console life. Otherwise it will be fall before the next arcade conventions in US/Japan since AOU was just a little bit ago. Maybe AMOA in September will shed some light.

Is a weapon based fighting game really THAT different and varied from a hand-to-hand fighting game?

The only difference I can think of is the extra range of weapons that you'll have to take into consideration. Other than that, the fighting engine should be quite identical.

So why should Yu Suzuki even try to come up with a "different" fighting game? Why won't he just add weapon's option to VF or something - especially if the new game's going to be like VF, only with weapons and differnet characters.

On second thought, I don't really want to see weapons in VF, but my point is that is it really that substatially differnt enough for Yu to invest in a whole NEW game?

They wouldnt kill off two popular characters.....Why should they even think about lowering the char count if they can just add on it?. They see that the chars they added arent actualy used a lot ( Rarely see vids of Brad and Goh)

They should go to the extreme. Kill off all the characters for VF5 or completely change the way *EVERYONE* plays so people will experiment more the way it was in VF1.

Weapon fighting is a TOTALLY different beast than hand to hand fighting. Momentum of weapon, weight, what part of the weapon hits, etc. Different defensive and offensive mindset. Fakes are a lot more critical.
The answer is : yes, it does warrent a new game.

If development of a weapon fighter means no VF5 then no thanks...

I don't think the two will be exclusiive to each other. VF5 will come out and end the series. Then the weapons fighter will (hopefully) begin development and come out.

That came from a Suzuki interview back in an old EGM. He mentioned it might be taking place in the Fighting Vipers continuity, which sparked my interest. I asked AM2 staff and PR about it during my Shenmue 2 interview, and they gave indication that they had NO IDEA what I was talking about.

... So I think Suzuki was just babbling again. He tends to do that a lot nowadays, since it's Kataoka/Katagiri mostly running the VF show now.

    (Kataoka, bring me FV3)

Zero: I thought Fighting Vipers did pretty good in the US and exceptional in Japan and Europe. How come FV2 never got a stateside release? Also, has there even been a vague mention of FV3? I still play my PAL FV2 some, but rarely against anyone else. I'll have to check and see if there is an online playable emu version of either 1 or 2.

Why hasn't anyone asked the important question...

FV2 didn't go over as well as it should in Japan mainly because of bad release timing (VF3tb was still in a very strong stride, and most of the Sega hype machine was going to the DC). Arcade FV2 never released officially outside Asia. (My boards are Japanese.) The DC version more than likely didn't get a US release because Sega wanted to start winding down the DC, and simply, the game didn't LOOK as good as DoA or Soul Calibur and likely just wouldn't go over well in the mainstream. AM2 had a publishing deal with Sega Europe in that all their titles could be brought over quickly and cheaply, thus, they got FV2 with no hassle.

AM2 is keeping tight-lipped about FV3. I've been told, "if enough people ask, it'll come." Knowing their development cycles, if it's coming it's still a long ways away.
