Nah, the best Lion quote by far is "Whhhyyy am I so Gheyyy!?!"

GP or anyone else that has an ear for it - what is the quality of the japanese voice acting like? Surely it can't sound as bad to native jpn speakers as jerky & lion sound to english speakers?

Even though the lines are pretty cheesy, the voice actors themselves (I think anyway) are much better than their western counterparts. I guess they've got a lot more to choose from for the Japanese voices. For the western ones, they paid very little cash for english speaking actors already living in Japan -- there's not a whole lot of them... obviously.

Alot of voice acting is done in different studios, and then sent over through the internet, or shippe in sound files on discs, location had nothing to do with it, it's just that Sega skimped out of paying money for long distance voice acting, and took local *"actors"* instead.

Well Sega aren't exactly going to pay alot of money to please the 5% of their market in US/Europe. It's a not crucial thing for a fighting game and the Japanese players won't know the difference so why bother.

Seriously, can't cost that much to find someone with both testicles intact to do voice acting can it?
Hell, alot of vf players would do it for FREE... and be HAPPY....... HAPPY I SAY!!!!!!!! [gets pulled away bye the guys in white coats]

They just don't give a shit. Most video game voice-acting is done at best, from the low-end voice acting market (ahem...devil may cry). I even got a call one time to possibly do a voice-over in a PS2 wrestling game (don't know which one). It was an hour trip each way, and a 10,000 guarantee, if that tells you anything about what they pay for US speaking vocie acting.

Go to www.engrish.com -- you can see, it's a Japanese thing, not just a game thing.

Hi. I found this thread and it's been a god-send. While playing VF4 Evo i've often wondered just what the characters are saying before and after battles. The translations match up to the kind of thing i was expecting.

I was particularly interested to know what Goh was saying. His cutscene when he kicks the fallen victim is very bad ass!

    Anyway, i have a request:
Does anyone know, or can they translate what the characters are saying after they lose a battle and you're asked to continue, and when you do - they put up their fist or get up from the floor ready to fight again?

I'm really interested to know and i'm not sure where i can find this information.

Sorry for cutting bits and pieces from all over your posts. I haven't got vf4 or vf4E yet so I can't be sure, but yeah.

With the Akira prefight quote, his he saying 'hontou'? 'honki' doesn't really fit in to it. And I'm suspecting 'tatakai' not 'tatakau'
From what I see, the quotes means:
    "Show me a true fight"

The kunfu one. His he (and the others as well) saying kan fu-? If the U in the kunfu is strong or if it's kufuu, than it more means effort/training/skill...

    Lau
Ken can mean sword or even fist (Tekken == iron fist, kendo == way of the sword).
But I think Lau is saying his fist has gone soft.

    Kage
Kage is saying that it's his skill that is weak, not the Hagakure technique. So:
"It does not mean that the hagakure was defeated!"

    Aoi
Kyoto dialect can be confusing even to a native Japanese...
From what I see, it'll mean this:
"By stopping this by this, it's the lead of strength"
shidou is to be lead, so in karate or something when you say, "shidou, oegaishimasu!"
It means please lead me, train me etc
But, if it's carrying the kyoto dialect, which I guess it certainly will, with the ending 'dossu'. I guess 'shi' can mean samurai
"By stopping this by this, it's the strength of the samurai"
    And 'bu'
bushi = samurai, buki = weapon, bugu = armor... it's hard to explain what 'bu' means because you actually need something afterwards to make it into a noun...
But it means to be strong or to fight (aka war).

Your translation will fit such a quote like this (made it up, not an actual quote from the game)
    "honki ni tatakawanaito ikenaiyoudana!"
Which is very close. The difference to your translation and what Akira is actually saying is that Akira is taking an initiative to fight seriously, rather than to have the other person make Akira to fight seriously.

Um... I guess it doesn't really matter... It get's the message through anyway.

Not confusing to understand... just hard to understand why they put it in the game. Even people from Kyoto don't really talk like that anymore.

    Re: lol

    yep, my mistake. Sorry,

With the kyoto dialect, it's like putting an Osaka dialect to merchants characters in rpgs etc... Well that's what I see to it. Besides, aikijyujitsu/jyujitsu gives such an impression. I personally see very beefy looking judo players to have an hakata dialect with the '~bai' at the end (I think that's what they have done with the kof guy...). It makes the character more alive? But it's a pain to translate, because that value is lost.

    Re: lol

Akira's "honki de tatakawasete morauze" could have two meanings depending on the reference. 1) I'm going to make you fight for real. Or 2) it means that he wants the opponent to fight for real... sorta like a request, but in a statement form. It'd be the same to say "honki no tatakai wo misete kure" or "hontou no tsuyosa o (ore ni) misero" (show me your true strength). Of course, a third meaning could be that he's saying that he's gonna fight for real (sorta like his opponent is his motivation to fight for real), but that wouldn't make good sense... at least in japanese (language or culture).

Like GaijinPunch mentioned, all of the translations are pretty much accurate, but many shouldn't be taken by their literal translation. For example, Lau's "waga ken mo nibuttaka" - ken = fighting technique/style, not literal fist (kobushi) or sword There's other little ones like " yosh' " (the i is not fully pronounced) which literally is "OK" or "ready" (yooi), but many times used as an expression directed to oneself... to get psyched for something (lack of better explanation). Very similar to "yosh'ya!" which is more of a kiai than anything.

For all intents and purposes though (whatever that may be), the translations are great. I just wanted to put in my two cents 'cause I get so much from this board... don't wanna just take, take, take ALL the time.
