Also, to train my AI, should I just beat the crap out of it for an hour in AI sparring mode?

Try to think of it as a student partaking in your superior knowledge of virtual martial arts. Nurture and love it, but with firmness. Treat it with respect and affection, while at the same time, giving it what you'd wish for it to have: a human soul...

all you can teach them is the moves on the move list and whatever pattern you can incorporate to those moves, from my understanding you can't teach them how to techroll, they learn it in due time, by them selves.

The best way to train your AI is to enter sparring mode and teach basic combos first. You should also run through a series of useful/safe attacks (emphasis on jabs, elbows, sidekicks and throws) while mixing in some evasive strategy. For Example: If your AI character is Lau, and you teach him the elbow-palm combo ([6]+[P], [P]), additional instruction is needed because elbow-palm leaves Lau at a disadvantage even if it hits. Always follow it with some sort of evasive move ([8]+[K], [8]+[P], [2]+[P]+[K], [4]+[P]+[K], [6]+[P]+[K] or [4]+[K]+[G]). These are all offensive moves that also serve defensive purposes. [8]+[K] and [8]+[P] are good combo starters and they both avoid low attacks. If your AI has more than one stance, be sure to teach the most useful moves. Basically, you should teach your AI everything included in the "series" section of trial training mode, as well as some useful tricks you've learned.

Before sending your AI into kumite, put it through arcade mode first. During battle, hold X to instruct them to block when they're under attack from a [P][P][P][K] combo or something similar. This will increase their defensive skills. For offense, just press "O" to instruct them to attack. If you wish to prevent your AI from performing a certain attack, just save the replay, show it to him repeatedly, and press "X" whenever you see the move. Eventually, the move will be forgotten. Once your AI is capable of completing Arcade mode on the highest difficulty setting, he/she should be destroying kumite AI's in no time.

Note: Some AI's are more difficult to train than others. Characters with multiple stances or complicated combos can be difficult to work with (Shun, Lei-fei, Akira). It's best to start with an easy character, or a character that you're very good with. If you're terrible with all characters, just pick Lau. /versus/images/icons/grin.gif /versus/images/icons/grin.gif /versus/images/icons/grin.gif

Give the AI strong fundamentals, emphasize throwing most of
all. I've had two AIs, Shun and Lau...Shun's defense was
shoddy, while Lau's was excellent, and Lau always punished
blocked opp.'s with throws. AI Shun didn't do that until much later.
I'd suspect each character has a certain learning curve, with Shun's
being the steepest, Lau's much simpler. You'll also note that the
AI struggles mightily to win matches...most of my AI's matches went the
full five rounds, against similarly ranked or higher ranked opps. During any
matches where you want to coach your baby, you should time your
X and O critiques so as not to distract your fighter, since he will look at
you with a prompted ? when you input, and this can lead to
a bad loss. Keep in mind your AI will hit a wall above 10-Dan...beating
10 consecutive 10-Dans to reach above Hero rank will require even
more study and dedication...

Actually, my AIs (Jacky, Aoi) hit a brick wall at Champion. At that point, they've fought enough CPUs to pick up bad habits like Aoi's hcf+P+G, no followup. Plus they still can't techroll or do decent ground attacks, as the AI learns your key sequences and not actual move sequences.
