Akira noob Questions

As the title implies, I'm new to Akira (and new to VF) so bear with me...

I was curious about how Akira players do the instant double palm... Do most players do it from a crouching back dash or crouching forward dash? Is there a benefit to doing it either way (i.e. is one way faster than the other)? Or is it just a matter of personal preference?

So far I've been doing them from crouching forward dashes... It's harder for me to do on the 2p side... so I'm just looking for more info on how most players go about practicing this.

    Thanks.

P.S. I decided to make a thread out of this since I didn't see anywhere else to ask beginner Akira questions (and I'm sure I'll have more soon)

P.P.S. I'll try (no promises tho) to keep the first post updated with the answers I find here... Mods may want to help in that effort as well if (and when) I get a little behind.

I think it boils down to personal preference. On 1p side I do 3346P. On 2p I do 3364P. It's easier for me to do 33 than it is to do 11.

Technical note (assuming 1p side): 1146P requires less stick travel than 3346P.

Like Plague said, it really all boils down to preference. On 1p side, i will either do 3346p, or 2142146, depending on if I want to crouchdash forward or backwards if I need to 'abandon' the doublepalm (evo DE for instance), and on 2p side I will just do 3364p (116 I can't get comfortable with).

Cool... thanx for the quick responses... It is definitely easier to do 33 than 11 for me also :)...

So there is no speed difference in doing moves from crouching back dash or crouching forward dash, right? (I could have sworn that it looks like it comes out faster from backdash... but that may be due to less stick travel as Plague said).

Crouch dashing in both directions from either side is essential for playing Akira well, there is a quite few times i've used the short retreat motion of a backwards CD to fool the opponent into pressuring me and eating a byakko. If you watch any high level Akira player you'll see them using crouch dashing to escape throws and high attacks as well as Okizemi their opponents.

The other thing you should work on is combos, Akira has a number of strong moves so beginners usually are so in love with the double palm and SPOD that they don't practice comboing off of all the major combo starters for a while - yoho, standing single palm, SDE, etc etc.

this is a good thread, I was thinking of starting a thread like this for a couple of reasons:

to list beginner combos that are easy to execute

to write a "primer" for people who are working from the Akira section in the Bradygames book.

regarding the DblPm, I think doing the backdash method is faster, since you only have to go from /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif to /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif, but it's just whatever you hand's comfortable with really.

I strongly recommend people, especially the first timers, to learn how to buffer a double palm using a backward crouch dash. Mechanically it's the most efficient method, and it forces you to learn how to crouch dash in both directions which is a very useful skill to have.

    No worries.

In general, you should always buffer the crouch dash that's closest to the next directional input.

    Akira's Double Palm: /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
    Akira's Single Palm: /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
    Akira's Shoulder: /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif

This advice applies to all characters.

yeah, i'm trying to pick up Akira in VF5 as well, although i've been using him as a sub and never explored his strong points indepth, this thread is good for me to learn from the bottom.

wouldn't it be more beneficial to double dash forward? with a slight delay which results to a longer reach?

unless it's a stumbling trip throw, which needs instant buffering, means both directions have the same result.

therefore buffering the crouch dash to the closest of the next directional input is not always the best outcome? depending if you want to back out or move forward?

For the stumble throw and break guards, you don't need to crouch dash at all. Just need to do /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif for Double Palm or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif for Single Palm.

ahh... yes, for single palm i do /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, for double palm i'd always buffer for it. thats how much i know about Akira. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif thanks.

Ah, yes. However - if you connect a singlepalm after stumble throw, it is possible to combo with doublepalm. CD is required to make this happen.

You say "In general," but for me it's better to do /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif for Akira's Shoulder simply because the new /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. Using /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif occassionally makes that move come out when I don't want it to.

I guess that's the exception: when you have a move that has very similar inputs to the direction you're buffering.

What's the use of Akira's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, anyways? Even though it has decent recovery on block, it has slow execution speed and horrible recovery on whiff, and doesn't even let you press the offense on a hit. Any ideas?

Does Akira still have that small window after standing from crouch to perform modified moves? I forgot to check.
/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif giving a DbPm, for instance.

    Plague,

after getting the game, and doing some testing, I think this is actually no longer possible, even though you're @ +13, same for the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. Unless someone with faster hands can get it to come out, I don't think this works anymore. I posted that I thought this in the "looking @ Aki's Frame Data" thread, but haven't taken the time to go back and edit the whole original post.

I have a feeling they took it out because of the DblPm's Wall KD, it would've been too strong.

At the beginning of this movie you can see quite nice alternatives for DbPlm in that situation. I yet do not have the game but I think that at least second option is quite good. Are those guarantied ?

I'm sure there are special cases where you may need to dash forward (i.e. dont you have to crouch dash forward after /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif?... maybe not... I am still pretty much trash @ it in general... lol)... but I think he meant "for the most part"

In any case, are there any other known specific instances where you need a forward or backwards crouch dash?

    - I.C.E.

P.S. I will try to add the answers to questions in the first post as much as possible... Mods/Admins may want to help in that effort if/when I get a little behind.

To the best of my knowledge, no, there are no instances where you're required to crouch dash forward or backward.

If you buffer it correctly, you should not see any crouch dash animation at all. When you can buffer this way every time, consider yourself to have mastered the instant double palm.

In every combo where the double palm is used, a perfect buffer will serve you well, 100% of the time.
