...yeah, I mean, if you're going to take away civil rights to defend civil rights, that's just dumb......I guess sometimes it seems more important to find the dying man than to acknowledge the rights of the murderer, but then what are you defending?....

This was different, the police officer shot the guy 5 times from verry close range, while the person was fighting for his life the police officer interrogated him and tried to make a guy who was in immense pain to state that he wanted to grab the gun thus excusing the cop from prosecution for shooting him.
This cvase is wrong on so manny levels that it defies belief.

If a cop shot 5 times at this lady/guy (Didn't read all of it obviously) this person must've done something very wrong or maybe just had a gun? A cop wouldn't just fire 5 times at someone that didn't do anything wrong.

sadly, that sentence is not very accurate.

on the topic of giving up certain rights...keep in mind that we've been doing it for a while now. Just look at the "ride programs": we allow completely random stops and interrogations/searches because we believe they will save lives (ie, get drunk drivers off of the road) but the fact is that it is illegal. Moving forward we may give up other rights in order to stop other behavior (how about random house searches to prevent child pornography from being developed or distributed).

the problem, mostly, is that commentary has taken the place of action. we are uncomfortable with securing our own rights and are being led down a very insidious path. There are paths to choose from that would dis-allow the eradication of your rights to freedom.

I would hope that people who *are* disturbed by this search out those paths and get involved. the time involved is very small, say about 4 sitcoms a week.

The cop claimed the guy wanted to grab his gun, the cop after shooting him stayed with him in the ambulance and hospital firing of questions to a guy fighting for his life in order to get a statement from him where the guy admited he wanted to grab the cops gun.

Tell me, what did Amadou Diallo do wrong when he was annaly raped with a stick and tortured by a NYc cop?

Cops are people in a power position, power can corrupt so thats why there should be legal safeguards in place to make sure that abuse of that power isnt corrupted or is seriously minimised.

..perhaps I confused you...what I meant was exactly that - if the rights of the criminal (who by the way is innocent until proven guilty) are taken away, that's like saying he his not a human being....that in turn means that he could one day be a victim, whos aggressor will be deprived of his rights etc. Either way, it doesn't really make sense....

Abner Louima was sodomized with a plunger in holding.

Diallo was shot at 41 times while entering his apartment.

    Still messed up regardless.
