SCUMM stands for Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion. It was a scriping language developed by Lucasfilm Games, who later became LucasArts. They were games in which you would connect verbs to nouns in order to perform actions on-screen. For example, "Pick Up" and "Broken Bottles of Ketchup." The interface was simple in that all of the verb commands were in a list and you didn't have to type them out. You just needed to click on a verb command and then click on a noun on-screen.

Here is a fan made remake created by the now-defunct LucasFan Games:

In this remake, music is added plus I believe that the interface is improved. For loyal fans, I don't believe that you can mess around with the keypad for the steel security door on the second floor. [IMG] I think that you can still do the thing with the hamster that Nintendo doesn't want you to do. [IMG]

The remake was enjoyable for me. The biggest complaint that I have is that I don't think Ed really makes the trek from upstairs to downstairs, so you can't get caught. I think that he might just appear somewhere after a certain amount of time. If he does actually travel, it's buggy. Still worth playing IMO.

Here is a fan made sequel to Zak McKraken and the Alien Mindbenders:

For a fan made game, the production values seem really high. A German version has already been released. I'm still awaiting an English version.

I really want to play the Monkey Island games. You can download a couple of demo versions by following the links from here:

There's also an Indiana Jones game that was made using SCUMM called Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I don't have a playable version to provide right now unfortunately.

Does anyone know where I could buy these games? I would prefer PC versions and not stuff for the Commodore 64 or whatever. If anyone can provide links that would be great.

I remember downloading a ScummVM port about 4 years ago so I could play Sam and Max on the Dreamcast. Awesome to hear that it is still going through updates. These were great games.

"Sam and Max Hit the Road" is far superior to the title you can download from XBLA. I'd suggest some googling and DOS Box.

The new voices blow as well.

You can use ScummVM with Sam N Max - Hit the Road, too, emulating the game much better than Dosbox.

I've started playing The Dig again now - so awesome.
