    Quick question.

Say your at an arcade, and someone is playing VF. You want to play too. He is by himself, so obviously, the second stick is free. How do you challenge him?

Dropping in your cash, asking if he would care for a round?
Is it your right to play who ever you want? Or does the currant player 'own' the machine until the game over screen?

I'm rather curious. I have been arguing for 7+ pages on another forum for one of those sides. Since my arcade scene is small here, I was curious as to what your peoples thought on the matter was.

And since no one here knows me, any opinions will be unbiased :p

Well with a fighting game like Tekken or VF I figure people aren't going to the arcade to practice by themselves, so I don't worry about it too much (and I've noticed that other people at the arcade don't either). I think it makes a difference for other arcade games where people might not want to play with another player. If I come across someone I don't know I gesture to them to ask if they want a game, but I think it's more politeness than anything else.

when i first started out at a couple of arcades where regulars dont go, i used to ask the guy if he wanted a game. most times he sed no. so one day i sed fuck it and just played anyway and beat his ass. so began my foray into the arcade world............

I think that if you just go up to the person and ask them nicely they will let you even if you are new at that arcade. Most people at the arcade are curious as to what you can do so they try to paly you the first time you ask them. Then after that, if you are good then maybe then they will not want to play you. That's what happened with me. I went to the arcade and noticed someone on the VF machine. I went up to him and asked him nicely and he agreed. Wee had a match and I whooped him and then he deiced to play me again until he tired of losing.

back in the dayze, i followed these rules

watch him play a bit, then:

    1) if the guy is a scrub, i just let him play. waste of your money to play scrubs anyway.

    2) if the guy is moderately good or better, chances are he wants competition anyway- so no questions, just join in.

This is a question that has no absolute answer.
You must use discretion depending on situation.
Generally speaking ,I think avid fighting gamers embrace competition and casual players and beginners don't.
I've spent time in a few suburban arcades where most players preferred and expected to play alone until their
games ended. In arcades where serious players practice I think the general unspoken rule is, step up and take your chances.
I have asked players who've said "no", then waited for their game to end , and while I was playing they and their friends put up coins and expect the same courtesy. So now I usually just try to evaluate whats going on.
I do yield for someone trying to set fastest clear timeor trying out moves setups situations but thats about it.
I don't mind being the badguy.

I generally ask first if I've never seen the person play before if I really want to play. If they say no, I'll be cool and put my money in and tell him I'll wait to see if he can finish. If he's losing I'll challenge saying you might have lost anyway; might as well try to beat me. If they are a total noob, I'll just let them finish and go to play my game alone.

What about the type of people who don't let you play at all. You know, the type that just don't get off even if they suck. In the past I have tried to respond to these type of people with general good humor, but it dosen't seem to be working. Should I just go crazy and scream at them??? Any suggestions?

If he knows there is a line to play, and he continues a game, plays again. Drop your quarter in. He's being a dick, and you can be too.

play anyway and kick his ass badly. then when he walks away, with ur back turned to him laugh loudly. if hes of weak mind hopefully he'll cry, otherwise, u just rid that game of another bad player. always goes down well in my book.

with Versus cabinets, there's no use for etiquette.
I believe though if someone decides to acknowledge you with a "good game" statement after they lose to you, you should at least acknowledge them back in someway.
