Saw it last night. Thought the CG was amazing and at times I would forget that it was actually CG.

Although not the strongest point, the story was somewhat acceptable. But the overall experience provided the perfect escape for me, which is sometimes all I want from a movie going experience.

The brief glimpses that Ive seen looked like a WoW-movie cutscenes..
Im personally completely unmoved by mere CG. Having things made in CG just because you can usually has a repulsive reaction in me. Id rather have the makers concentrate on other things. That said, having the 'seen all'-feeling makes that hard too.. I guess I can never again enjoy movies like I used to when I was young.

Saw it on friday night myself. The effects were amazing. I felt the story was the weakest part of the film. As a sci-fi film you could pick massive holes in it. Better to just take it as is and enjoy the ride. The characters, pacing and everything else was great.

I do hope that everyone who is seeing this is watching it in 3D. That was totally immersive and really made you feel like you was there without the normal crappy 3D tricks like throwing items at you. Really made the film for me.

If this film was made by any other director, would anybody be willing to forgive the weakness of its plot?

He pulled a Lucas, just because theres a lot of shit on the screen does not make it epic.

When I watch science-fiction I want the emphasis to be on science, hard science, and not watered down plots for the shopping mall crowd with pretty visuals.

James Cameron worked on Terminator, Terminator 2, Aliens, and The Abyss, films that not only had visuals that pushed the boundaries of special effects at the time, but had outstanding well written plots.

In a decade or so films like Avatar with be much more common and some of them will have much better plots. Meaning Avatar will be matches in effects and surpassed in story within ten years. Meaning Avatar will have almost no real legacy in film in my opinion.

I'll bet this will be the most overrated film within the last twenty years.

Loved it is all I'll say. While the story may not that great the overall delivery of the movie is what made it great for me. Sometimes it doesn't have to be about getting an epic story line or all things answered. If things are flowing together at a good pace and you are not getting bored then that's all I ask for in a movie.

Like Myke said it was definitely a good escape and the visuals which will probably be the norm is ten years definitely helped you feel like you were there. But come on EmpNova we are not talking about 10 years from now. We are talking about right now, yesterday, last night! Until the next decade gets here left at least give the movie the credit it deserves.

People can pick at the plot and all it's holes all they want, but bottom line it's still a movie worth seeing. And don't cheat yourself! Make sure you see this movie the way it was intended to be seen.... IMAX!

I'll be seeing it again for sure sometime next week.

Saw it last night and I thought it was good.

I'm really curious to see how it does in the theaters. From what i've heard, its the most expensive movie of all time costing around 500 million and that means the movie will need to make around a billion dollars to seem profitable. If that doesn't happen, it might be bad news for Camerons next project, Battle Angel. Thats what I REALLY wanted him to make for the last 10 years.

    Avatar summed up? $500M Anime.

If that sounds appealing to you (it does to me), then watch it. If it doesn't, don't.

The budget for the film was insane and with that amount of cash given to you you bet your ass people are expecting results.

I think the risk is too great in attempting an ambitious plot/story when you're spending over 300mil in production. Unfortunately you need something safe - for your career's sake.

I guess I liked the movie so much because I have never seen DWW. I've heard how fantastic DWW was, but I just never got around to seeing it. Also I'm very easily pleased. I never go into any movie expecting nothing more than a nice get away from reality. So for me movies like Avatar, Watchmen, Dark Knight... hell even Iron Man and Spiderman delivers plenty of that get away I'm looking for.

I have never been a heavy critic on many things except Shun [IMG]

My coworkers hated me because I thought every movie sucked, every new song sucks, every game and pretty much everything sucks in this day and age.

I went to this movie and I was very very impressed. And to think my friends actually had to FORCE me to go even when they had a free ticket for me!

Same for me except I don't tell my coworkers my opinions. I might still go watch this just for the sake of it.

At least it can't rape a well-established mental image like Transformers.. Therefore a scratchbuilt story doesn't have to clear the same kind of hurdles as those that use an old story, or are remakes of old movies.

ps. Most modern things suck, but at least theres still music I like, even though it tends to be old.

pps. Battle angel Alita is possibly my most favorite manga, and Im not sure I like the idea of someone making a movie of it.
