    Defensive - Basics from mid range

    The basic move of defensive is middle kick /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. Because she steps forward to do it, it has great range, and on top of that the total frames for the move are 40, meaning that even if it evaded it is hard to punish. Among the middle kicks in VF, this one is at the top of the class. Firstly, aim to hit this move at the tip of its range. When you do this and it is guarded it pushes back, so with a backdash or even a ARM backwards you can avoid your opponent's retaliatory moves.

    One other important move is the attacks from standing /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif. At 12 frames the execution is on the slow side, but it has a continuation of /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif. Because of this, just by making them guard the move you are in an advantageous position. Against a fuzzy or ETEG you can crouch dash in towards them and go for a delayed throw. Agaisnt opponents who expect that, you can delay /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and go for a counter.
    Once you've gained advantage you can go for the moves mention below to attack. If you are disadvantaged, look to switch to the moves mentioned in that section.

    - /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif after guard is -8. There are no guaranteed punishments, so going for sabaki moves like /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif will help.
    - The mid string /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif from standing /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is also strong. On normal hit it gives +3, and the forth hit is special high.

    Defensive - Mindset at distance.
    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif trumps /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif at distance to be the main move. The execution is slow at 21 frames, but it is a full circular mid move with superior reach to /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif so if you use it well your opponent won't be able to approach. While watching their actions, you can use it to interrupt them or to dash in with it, but don't get stale about using it. If you knock them down you have the opportunity to attack, or if they focus on defending you can dash in to throw.

    - /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is -8 on guard, but if you have it blocked at maximum range the risk is low as it spaces out. For opponent's who dash in to try to force a mixup, abare with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif.

    Defensive - Movelist options at advantage
    The first move you want to learn is what could be called her main option in mixups, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif.     At +4, the 16 frame /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is effective. In addition to having high damage, you can utilise the delay into the follow up moves to use it effectively. In addition to that, if you mix it up with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif for evades to her back and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif to her front, you can deal with ETEG quite well. However, when at +1 and you executed it from standing it will be beaten by the opponent's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif.     Tanks a lot for the translation, the Vanessa section of the black book is the largest of all the characters, so there is plenty of usefull info, keep it coming ^^.
    I'll try posting the offensive combo stuff in a few weeks (working on Lion combos atm).
    Imo the punishment section shows one of the weakness of Vanessa in def stance, you don't have good punishment damage until -15 -17, where a lot of char have P,K + advantage, standing palm moves, 10 frame punch string punishment with advantage (Eileen) etc
    However since her throw game is strong, I guess you can always gamble for a throw at -12 to get good damage.

    Fuck the above. After 2 months of Vanessa mashing I must conclude there is no reason why anyone should ever use OS over DS unless you want to fight a predictable uphill battle and want to rely on traditional defense only (fuck that) or are Japanese.

    I don't see problem here, at least it has a use, and as you mentioned on side hit it's a great move, if opponent duck or attack he's in for the whole string leaving vanessa at +6 still side turned. In this situation 2+K string is is not interuptible which means even more side turned goodness ^^.


    Range is limited compared to DS


    You forgot to talk about 66+K in the good stuff, I really think this move should be mentioned. May be it's not as godly as DS 66+K but it's still one of her best move imo, and this lets you play with side turned situation quite often which is good imo. A lot of chars have to work harder to get thos situations, I think it's definitely a good thing OS Vane has. 66+P also have decent reach and awesome pushback on hit for wall setups, think of it has vanessa's equivalent of Lei's 66+P.

    On OS good stuff list I would have had garanteed P,K punishement at -11 one thing DS really lacks. Plus there's alot of options after it hits.


    Strings I also really like are 6+P,P+K+G and 3+K,P+K+G it gives good +3 on hit which if you have good CD modifying makes DS ws uninterruptable, if you don't, 6+K-->hit throw will crush everything but stand P. On guard few opponents know/remember you're at advantage (+1) so you can often stop their retaliation with 2+P for a counter hit. Sure the second hit of those strings are highs but 3+K having a mid followup will force your opponent to think twice before crouching. Hit confirming those strings and doing the approiate flowchart is the key here, but it works a lot for me.
    Os is more rushdown oriented, it may not have all the options of DS but it's a good alternative for getting close with the better stand P speed and fast mids.

In DS she doesn't have anything worth shit until +16, and nothing GOOD until +17

    She has VERY complete set of nitaku options. First, an elbow. Not one of the game's best, but it's there. ws /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is 15f and an underrated move, the stagger on counter hit is REALLY good. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and ws+K (from crouching) at 16 frames. and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif at 17f (I tested this a few months ago and I think Black Book is incorrect at listing /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif as 16). With the variation in hit types here she is well equipped for handling characters with sabakis/reversals. Vanessa's nitaku in DS is really good in DS too with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, but is receiving damage nerf in Ver C.

    There's nothing wrong at all with her range in OS, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is only 15 frames and has great reach (this move is great on round starts, try it), HCF+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is unexpectedly good from backdash, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif has great reach and tech crouches as a bonus. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif has terrific reach and has good followups. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif can also be used from a distance, (they've given this move crouch stagger in Ver C too, yay).

    I don't understand how anyone could complain about the damage on OS Vanessa. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif gives in the 70's on every character, including LW.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is better for more reasons listed. First off, it's only 14 frames in execution.     I think one of the biggest mistakes a Vanessa player can make is to base too much of their game on the "quirky" stuff in DS. This will only make you vulnerable in the long run. Sabakis (especially with the clash system)/reversals/inashis should strenghten your basic game, not be the basis of it. DS is strong, yes, but to say that there's no reason to ever use OS is incorrect.

    Well even if you guys disagree with him Sebo definetly invigorated this thread. Great info fellas...Im starting to fall more in love with OS myself. It forces me to play solid rather than using just-frames and sabakis all day

    In general, I think you'll find that people aren't just going to sit down and do a brain dump on a particular topic whenever someone asks them to.

    For some people, that's a massive task and I dare say they wouldn't have enough time, nor the motivation, to even do that in a single sitting.

    Saying "something blows" could be motivation enough for someone to reply, but not always. I think most people's replies will be motivated by their anger/frustration, rather than in the spirit of sharing or contributing! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif But if you qualify your statement of "something blows" with reasons why, then I think you'll find that you may attract more informative replies.

    In other words, if you want a discussion on a particular topic, then help get it started. Do not complain that other people aren't providing you with information.

    Note that simply creating a new thread and asking others to populate it for you is not helping getting it started! Demonstrate that you've taken the time to think about the subject, and at least offer an opinion on it.

    Also, you'll do well to offer some starting points or questions that others can pick up on. Be specific if you can, and the more specific, the better. Focused and specific questions are much easily answered than broad/general ones.

    p.s. the above isn't directed at anyone or any thread in particular, but just a general response to many comments I've been reading lately about how "inactive" the forums are.
