Board Ideas

I think there should be 2 new boards. An R-rated board and a flame war board. The R-rated board would be for posting anything and saying anything. The flame war forum would be a blessing to Elite, who could now flame me, Horsepool, and Dark Sparda without persecution.

What do we need an R-Rated board? It's not like anyone's ever censored for swearing or something on posts.

An R-rated board (and a flame board) sounds like an excuse to whine and dump verbal garbage on everyone. If a board's primary purpose is to encourage acting like a jackass, people will make posts just to do that instead of making posts worth reading (i.e. posts that have a point and are worth discussing).

The only suggestion I have is actually splitting character and technique trainging into character and technique respectively but only so that character training can than be split into character by character sectioning for easier vieweing.

This one was suggested before. I think it was shot down because many techniques apply to more than one character, and we have a lot of trouble getting people to post in the correct board anyway... so character specific posts would probably end up on the wrong board and would have to moved constantly. Also, 15 boards is a TON of clutter for people who want to read everything (I can't claim I read all of VFDC every day but I read all of char. and technique training, because knowing the characters you don't play is still important).

Besides, if fewer clicks is your goal and you play several characters, you have less work if there's one board. A lot of us here play more than one character. If you want information on just a specific character, Myke has a neat little script - click the character's name from the home page and you'll see all recent posts that mention that character in the topic on the right.

Naturally there's also this nifty little search button /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Finally - if anyone wants to post specific stuff on one character, just make sure that character's name ends up in the post's topic. Most people are pretty good about that. That guarantees that it'll show up under the discussion section of their section on VFDC.

    this is off-topic but....

is there anyway that when YOU reply to your favourite thread, an e-mail reminding you about your OWN reply ISN'T sent to you? i kno its a small thing but it gets tedious /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. i could live with it but i guess its a suggestion to improving the site.

I actually kinda like this idea...its not like idiotic and self important talk are not already rampant on this message board anyways...this way it can be condensed into one area.

You've got to be seriously deluding yourself to think you can channel all those types of posts into the one board. Trying taking a step back and think about the cause of the problem. If someone is going to get flamed, then the last thing the flamer thinks about is what board they're about to post in. You can't stop people getting flamed, no matter how hard you try.

Adding more boards with no specific and useful purpose just adds more confusion to newbies and first-time posters, who are already having trouble enough as it is. This applies to not-quite-newbies too (e.g. Snake-eater asking for someone to make him a sig image in Junky's Jungle) /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

One "general" board is enough as far as I'm concerned, and the character specific stuff CreeD has already addressed nicely.

If anyone has any other ideas, feel free to express them here.

    BYO flame-proof suit.

I know that no one will re-direct a flame war to the flame war board, it will be there when a thread gets shut down but the war still rages.

www.sherdog.com actually has a board that is kinda similar to this...called the no gloves board or something to that effect. They allow people to be more liberal in what they say to one another.
