Brody inspiration for Jeffery?

    I always thought the famous wrestler "Bruiser Brody" was the inspiration for Jeffery. The originlal VF1 Jeff looked a lot like him, especially since he was lighter in skin tone. Time went on, Jeff got darker and his moves changed a bit. But, he maintained the wild man persona Brody always had. Jeff was also featured in the wrestling game "Giant Gram" for the dreamcast. In the sequel to GG, there was no Jeff, but Brody made an appearance and the way he looked/played really reminded me of him. Anyhow, I know Brody was big in Japan and figured he was possibly the inspiration for Jeff. Just a thought.

    That's an interesting find... you might be on to something. I wonder if there are any other inspirations...?

    I'll go with Akira = ryu
    Lau = some HK action star
    Shun = any drunken old man in old MA movies, and jacky chan's DM series for his moves.
    Jacky = token american with bruce lee for his moves
    Vanessa = Storm

    Hey Creed, thanks for the fantastic Goh guide. It's helped me a lot.

    Let me see here...inspirations for characters.

    Jeff=Definitely Brody. Brody acted just like Jeff does in his win poses, except he'd bark like a dog. He looks just like him to, and was big as hell (6/8).

    Akira=Yeah, I'd say Ryu too. His style of martial arts, Ba Ji was really big in China during the Ming dynasty. The style is more or less dead, but the old practicioners were supposedly real deal killers. They did a great job of reflecting it.

    Lei Fei=Wong Fei Hung, Jet Li, Shaolin monks.
    Vanessa=Character wise, I agree she's storm. She has quite a few moves from "no holds barred" competitions like the knees to the head and rear naked choke.

    Goh=No clue, he's like a zombie. His style is old school Judo combined with some vicious strikes. Closest thing to Masahiko Kimura I've seen in a game style wise.

    Wolf=Hmmm, I don't know. Did the All Japan wrestling star Jim Steele use the Wolf Hawkfield gimmick before the video game character or after? Anyhow, Wolf has a whole slew of All Japan, New Japan, and WWF wrestling moves.

    Pai=The typical Kung Fu girl.

    Shun=Jacky Chan, old teacher in Drunken master.

    Brad=Brad looks like a backstreet boy, but playstyle reminds me of a combo of Paco from bloodsport, Muhammad Ali (His win quote), and the stand up fighting used in K1 kickboxing tournaments.

    Sarah=No clue really. Cynthia rothrock?

    Jacky-Yeah, token 80s whiteguy with Bruce Lee moves.

    Aoi=She's Aikido/Aiki Ju Jitsu. I think they picked her because those styles are supposed to use very little, if any effort and a small women would have to conform to those principles if she were to have any chance to win against a man. Also, the last real grandmaster of Aiki Ju Jitsu named Sokaku Takeda had a wife who was skilled in it. Maybe she is the inspiration?

    Lau=The mean old Kung Fu master from every movie?

    Lion=A "Hip" kid for today /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

    I would imagine that just a little bit of the inspiration for Jeffry, particularly his most recent incarnation, came from the founder of modern day pankration, Jim Arvanitis:

    Lau would definately be mercanary tao of dragonball, from what i heard the programmers of the original VF were huge dragonball fans, hence tournament style arenas, and ring outs. Oh ya and jacky looks like a super seiyan -_-;;

    Holy shit, they didn't ven try to hide the rip off of Lau from that design. Good call.

    Yeah, maybe Jeff has some roots in that pankration guy too.

    jacky almost certainly has some dbz roots as well. there's a movie that featured some alpha designs of vf1, and in one you see an early character that looks a bit like jacky "powering up" (yellow aura and all) and blasting away huge rocks from him.

    ..not that i follow dbz that much...

    you're not really kidding about brad = steve, I'd forgotten that one. I have like almost zero interest in tekken, but when I saw steve for the first time (after having seen brad)... I was convinced.

    the super thin sideburns + goatee makes it seem like more-than-a-coincidence... until you remember all the studly young italian guys are wearing that these days, probably. But in the first pic the resemblance is there...

    True but he's extremly famous in Italy and in the soccer world in general and also one of the first, if not the first, I ever saw to sport that look. I don't see who else it could be.

    I went to Italy a year ago (awesome place). Now, I wasn't checking out the guys, but I don't recall seeing too many goatees, nor sideburns other than my own, whcih can get Elvis-style quite easily.

    I thought the Del Piero resemblance was obvious, and probably intentional, the first time I saw Brad's portrait.

    As far as gameplay similarities go, I think Brad has more in common with Tobal 2's Dr. V and Ehrgeiz's Prince Naseem. Both of these character fought with Muay Thai style, and had a variety of slipping and sway stances/attacks.

    Oh, yeah -- one other thing.
    Has anyone ever heard of an Italian named Brad?

    I guess the same should be said for a Frenchie named Lee-Ohn, when it's pronounced Le-ohn (even spelled differently when Japan-ized).

    Atleast they got an original french last name (Rafale) to even things out. But Brad got screwed big time : Mr. Burns /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif. In VF5 they'll have a brazilian guy named Smithers or Ned Flanders.
