Button Layout question

I'm just starting to learn VF and can't remember the button layout (the last time I played it in the arcades was when I was 10).

How would you configure the buttons if you had an HRAP where the button layout is like this:

    Square, Triangle, R1
    X, Circle, R2

Would the proper layout be Square=G, Triangle=P and R1=K with the index finger on G, middle on P and ring on K or is the proper layout X=G, Square=P, Triangle=K with the thumb on G, index on P and middle on K? The latter would make more sense to me since those fingers are more dextrous but I can't remember if that's for sure.

    Thanks in advance.

On the HRAP 3 it would be X = G, [_] = P and O = K. This would be "proper" in that it is how the layout would be in the arcade.

Most players seem to play with their thumb on G, index on P and middle finger on K

O = K? This would not be as it is in the arcade. That would put the Kick button lower down than the Punch. Imagine laying your right hand down flat and looking at the tips of your thumb, index, and middle finger. That's the layout you're looking for. Hence X=G, Square=P, and Triangle=K.

The latter is correct, I play it like that too. Just makes more sense and doesnt' hurt your wrist.
