I kind of still don't "get" cancelling, unless it's just me being anal about it. When you cancel something, it's as if it never happened, I always thought. So if you evade then cancel it with a dash, you made it where the dash never happened? I asked before if "cancelling" was another way of saying "hurrying along" a move, but was told no. I understand cancelling a kick with guard to make the kick stop right there, and not proceed... It just seems the wrong thing to call it, when going from evade to dash, or dash to guard. The dash still happened, you just cut it short is all. By that logic, it seems like it would be used for everything, like "I cancelled my crouch into standing", or something.

I don't know if understanding this on "my terms" is necessary. I know how to evade, then buffer in a dash real quick, then guard real quick. I can also fuzzy, kind of. So maybe I understand what I need to understand, I don't know. It just seems like I'm missing something..

If you prefer, you can replace the word "cancel" with "interrupt." With Evade-Dash-Guard, you interrupt the failed evade animation with a dash and then interrupt that dash animation with a guard. Or try "abbreviate": You abbreviate a failed evade with a dash and then abbreviate the dash with a guard. It seems you understand the notion but are hung up on the semantics.
