My laptop was working fine yesterday, but when i tried booting it up earlier today, the damn thing won't load past the "Windows is starting up..." screen!

I tried to boot up through safe mode, but it still got stuck there. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm no computer ace but it could be windows files corruption , hard drive corruption or something from a virus. Maybe a formatting of the drive is in order.

Ah, I have had the same problem recently. Try this:

Remove every item that is connected to your computer. This means speakers, printer, scanner, ethernet/phone line, etc., but keep your monitor, keyboard, and mouse on. Then start the computer. This should fix it, if it dosen't remove the mouse and then when it works just plug it in and start working. Sometimes you might have to restart after it works again if it was the mouse.

Try it, maybe it will work.

God damn it Adnan. Still running your machine w/o anti-virus software? That's like having sex w/o a condom. /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif

you could have an issue with your registry. have you tried reinstalling windows? if that doesn't work, there could be an issue with your PCI bridge. try the reinstall first and then get back to me.

you could always try ghosting your hard drive before you reinstall windows to see what you can recover. most likely, the files needed got fucked and you've already lost everything. =D

Just reinstalling Windows will not erase any of your data on the hdd, no matter where it is. It should only overwrite the Operating System related files. If the installer, somehow, wants you to format the drive, don't do it -- you'll lose everything.

Reinstalling can be good when you need to repair a broken OS. In fact, the Windows installer should recognise that a previous installation exists and ask you if you'd like to repair.

Anyways, if he can't even boot into Windows, there's little chance of backing anything up. The only other way to access the files on the disk is to boot up into something like Linux, and then mount the windows partition from which you can copy the files from. But, you need a place to copy the files to, such as an external hdd or a (large) usb memory stick.

    Ad, just try reinstalling first.

Yeah, Myke. I can't back anything up cause i can't even boot into windows. I should reinstall windows first, but i don't have the windows software that came with the laptop. /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif

So, i guess the Linux --->external hdd seems like my only option, right?

If you're desparate, you can try this (unless you want to pay for a new OS installation disk):

    Note: this is illegal.

    1. Get yourself a good torrent software (utorrent is awesome).

    2. Go to a good torrent site (isohunt.com is pretty good).

    3. Search for windows xp whatever, iso (so you can burn it). When you think you found a good copy (with the keygen), start downloading. When it's done downloading, unzip, and burn to a DVD. Write down the keygen on a piece of paper.

    4. Install it on your laptop. Use the keygen you just wrote down.

^^That should really be your last option though.

I recommend trying out what Srider said. If that doesn't work, you might as well start downloading the OS (it'll take a while, so you can try some other things while it's downloading).

Ad, you need to address the original problem of how to get your computer working again.

    Best case scenario:
Corrupted OS which can be repaired with a reinstall. For this, you need Windows XP installation media. All your personal files, data, etc will remain intact.

    Worst case scenario 1:
HDD data corrupted which may require you to reformat the HDD. To get your computer up and running again, you still need Windows XP installation media.

    Worst case scenario 2:
HDD is mechanically failing, and data corruption in worst case scenario 1 (above) can be a sympton of a drive about to fail. In this case, you'll need to replace the HDD with a new one. But eventually, again, you'll need Windows XP installation media (notice a trend here?) /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

For the two worst case scenarios, you will probably want to rescue any of your personal files. This is where the booting into Linux option comes in. Look at Knoppix, which is a free, bootable Linux OS. Download the image and burn onto a CD. You then boot from the CD, attempt to mount your windows partition(s), and retrieve your files to another location (like an external HDD). Note that there's no guarantees that your files will be intact if there's any data corruption on the HDD.

Knoppix is free, and there's documentation there to help you get it going. I don't know how beginner friendly it is though, so if you really wish to go down this route and get stuck, just let me know.

Personally, I use DSL (Damn Small Linux) on a 1G USB stick for my personal emergency needs. DSL is a variant of Knoppix but, true to it's name, is damn small(!) at only 50MB.

Stick to using Knoppix though as I think DSL is a tad more beginner-unfriendly.

Wow - thank you to everyone who offered to help. I will try all of the suggestions. Unfortunately, booting via "Last known good configuration" gave me the same result... /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I will use utorrent to get the software i need, and try everything that Myke suggested.

Once again, thank you! (My pr0n needs to be saved!!)

Try this first! I wouldn't sweat too much. Windows problems aren't really problems, they're annoyances. And if it's a hardware HDD problem, you're fucked anyway. /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Edit: Well actually you're not as fucked as one might think... Major HDD problems can still be solved - for instance by using a program like SpinRite (http://www.grc.com/) - however, those utils aren't very user friendly.

You could also try simply taking the HDD out of the laptop and plugging it to another computer to at least salvate the data (that is, if you really want to save all that kiddy pr0n).

Also if all else fails with the harddrive it may be still under warranty, so try spinrite if it's a hardware failure your warranty may come through with a brand new one for free /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
