Changes made from VF3 to VF4, makes me pissed...

Virtua Fighter 3 was a beautiful game, and showed the beginnings of great things to come, and yes in VF4 the great things did come, but, not all.

The first time i played VF4 was way back, and I was looking everywhere just to find a machine, and I did, to my surprise mostly Universities cared this game. So i make my way to the UCLA arcade, and I hear this really loud music, i turn the corner and its on big projection screen, with ultra loud sound, it was VF4, happily surrounded by fellow fans.

I approach, pop in 75cents, and play with my bro and sis.

I was SHOCKED to see that the evade button, which many people including me have relied on to further extend combos and use strategically, was removed! and replaced with a time comsuming 3button press plus joystick tap! Till this day i haven't been able to get it to the right timing, mainly because i have no time to play anymore, and that shit is alot of money. And NO i don't own a PS2,, I'm a sega loyalist, DC forever.

ANYWAY, another beautifully conceived idea in VF3 was the multi plane terrain, not the regular mat, featured in VF1 and 2. WHY was it removed, the terrain was critical to combinations! The decision to remove it was Segas worst! They took a step back in LVL design.

If these elements were returned, Virtua fighter would be perfection.

    hehe the topic comes back....

And I'll pretty much rehash what I said after a couple months of playing VF4 awhile back...

Though VF3tb is probably my favorite in the series, VF4 is pretty much on the same regards sharing the top spot on my list of fighters. I like VF4 as much as VF3tb now, but pretty much for different reasons.

Anyways, I loved the positioning game of VF3, the evade button was awesome for what it did in VF3's game imo (dashing and dodging and buffering). I loved the "strictness" of inputs in VF3. I like how VF3 was even cut and dry on many things (though there were still some whacked stuff in the game like all games imo). I even love the speed of VF3, which I would say is actually faster than VF4.

However, VF4 has created its own realm of being an awesome VF title. Regarding the dodge system, I have to say I love what it did to the battles in VF4. Dodging is now a dependent element of the game, best used properly by dodging to the correct side and during the execution of an attack. This has given dodging a more direct purpose and application than in most other 3d fighters. It's now just better to use dodging only when you're in a frame disadvantage situation. Regarding the flat arenas, there is a bit more definition in what one should do, and it remains consistent with the intensity of VF4 (and you don't have to hear someone bitch about terrain BS--mind you I love terrain in VF3). In a way, your fundamentals are more focused, and your chances of encountering an opponent who can maximize damage is a bit better. Besides... walls are way more damaging on a general level in VF4 than they were in VF3.

Anyways... terrain was nice in VF3, and so was the free dodge system. But those features alone didn't make VF3 great or make any game great. For an example of that point, I can't say terrains or walls or dodge-emphasis made Tekken 4 great.... in fact, I feel Tekken 4 is so lame compared to Tekken Tag. And you've probably heard that elsewhere too.

I wouldn't be shocked to see both of these in VF5-

Re: the lack of an evade button. The evade button is an ideal solution, but the lack of it doesn't bug me anymore... except when I want to do a crucifix piledriver or some other [3] [3] motion and end up with a dodge instead. That pisses me off.

The slope didn't really affect the battles that much for me, but I MISS the non-squareness and non-flatness of VF3 stages. The stages in VF4 do look worse no matter how generous I try to be with them... they look slightly sharper and a WHOLE lot less interesting.

Anyway, I guess it's a moot point, VF4 is already on its downslope.
I hope the will of the people in japan causes slopes and the E button to reappear in the next version.

Death to the Evade button. I like it w/ three buttons - especially on those damn non-uniform machines you guys have all over the world. Man -- 4 buttons would rip my fingers out.

wow, GP, that IS a really good point. Playing VF4 on machines with sucky button layout (like all three in a horizontal line) is bad enough.

This just a quick reply to the people who said that playing with 4buttons sucks.

Just admit that one time or another you played a fighting game with 6buttons... (you know what game that is), so adding an extra button to a plain 3 button setup would not do any damage.

Admit it -- that game and the whole freaking franchise sucks shit. Capcom is quite innovative, but seeing the same thing rehashed 28 times for 15 years is just plain boring.

Hehe, I hate 6 buttons, but I can see why Capcom uses them: I saw how much damage the loss of medium attacks did to certain characters in MvC2 and (even more so) in CvS1. I also tolerate 6 buttons for BG because there is literally no other way to pack 16 normals into a 2-direction stick with no block button. However, I'd much rather play with fewer buttons: my favorite control scheme until BG was OMF 2097, with TWO buttons.

3 buttons is just fine......F**K the evade button. I'd hate to see the it reinstated for VF5, only to have the U.S. arcades COMPLETELY screw up the button layout. IMO, simplicity is always better.

In all honesty I didn't really like vf3 all that much so the absence of the evade button doesn't bother me. Like Dre said, simplicity is best

You aren't the only one. I thought i'd fall in love with VF4, however once i played it and found out the sidesteps weren't the same as 3tb's i was pissed. Also my fav character Akira didn't feel the same. His Double jump kicks were slower and his Mountain of Steel seemed to have more start up time and it just felt like a wierd game. I've since gotten used to it but 3tb will always be my favorite.

Gameplay things aside, the "cosmetic" area of the game also turned me off. The character models are nice but some of the CG pics make me say "WTF". Akira looks like his is hispanic instead of asian, sarah is ugly, Jacky looks like a mofo. The Music although good in some areas mostly sounds like damn pr0n music especially Aoi's and Vanessas's music. Man Those have to be the most annoying songs ever. I also like the levels but square flat arena's are so played out. I know they can do better.

p.s. i read somewhere that Yu Suzuki said the evade button will make a comeback. The question is when?
