Character-Specific Strategies

I don't mean to detract from the general Lion thread or anything, but I thought that the Lion thread had become rather stale, and I wondered about any character-specific problems or strengths that Lion has. I played against a very strong Pai and Shun Di, and I found that Shun wasn't able to track Lion very well, but Pai was able to cr./forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif Lion out of several pressure strings for a launch. I'll add the specific strings later on, but for now, I'd just like to get the topic started.

    Any character-specific problems? Please contribute.

Lion has a very strong game vs. Sarah thanks to his sabaki and his unique ability to pwn high pressure.

I'd also imagine he can be strong vs. Akira, Jeffery, Wolf and anyone that is vunerable when they whiff. He has a strong spacing game.

    Hey JF ^_^

Regarding Pai being able to low punch Lion a lot...

Something to know about Lion is that he's generally slower than he seems (as confusing as his animations are to people not used to fighting him). But more specifically, his low punch is a frame slower than almost everyone else's. The upside is that Lion's low punch has a bit more reach and it factors into the spacing game.

Re-reading what you said... I guess you were talking about Pai's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif MC launcher. It's 16 frames of execution, which is fast enough to punish you if you attack your opponent after they block something. It shouldn't be interrupting your strings unless you're delaying them too long, but you don't want to overuse strings.

If you know that attack is coming, you can defend it and go for a throw or mid attack (though it's common for Pai players to do Evade-Throw-Escape-Guard after a whiffed or blocked /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif). You can also dodge the attack in either direction.

If they go for the ETEG after you block the upper, you can delay an attack just long enough to hit them when they get the bad sidestep. Sweep is fine, but sucks if they block it.

For high-risk/high-reward when you think opponent will do ETEG, I go for a slightly delayed /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif --> /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif combo (my default is to continue with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, but at weird angles, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif works). This will also nap them if they go for a throw.

I like to use Lion's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif --> /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif in situations like this too, but it's NOT A GOOD WAY TO PUNISH ETEG, because it's very little reward for the risk, it's more like something to do to annoy them (which I enjoy doing). In Version C, it's an even bigger risk because catch throws are MC'able.

That said, in Version C, this attack of Pai's will be counterable so I think you can just /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif Pai after blocking the attack. And with Lion, you do have that /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif vs. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif vs. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif (careful with this one though) options in any guaranteed /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif situation.

Just my thoughts... Not necessarily the best answers at all (again, I generally advise against going for the catch throw after blocking Pai's attack, but I love doing it anyways).

Very informative- Thanks! Although Pai doesn't even need her /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif to launch, since her jab launches on counter-hit. Quite frustrating how incredibly cheap it makes her. Jabs just shouldn't launch. It's plain wrong /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

Hmm... Pai's jabs (nor anyone's) should launch on counterhit, unless they interrupt an attack or string where the interrupted character is in the air.

In the case of Lion, you might be doing /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif or some hop attack too much. Maybe even /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif --> /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif or something like that.

Again, jabs shouldn't launch unless you are using an attack that takes your character off of the ground.

The big deal about an interrupting jab is that they create enough advantage to really pressure the opponent with a mid-throw guessing game (because the opponent can only defend against a throw by escaping it or attacking). And low jabs definitely don't launch in most situations.

I suppose I didn't make myself clear. Not crouching jab. It's rising. Dunno if that makes a difference, but I know it happened against my Eileen as well, who I do few hopping attacks with on pressure strings.

I suppose I could get a visual aid of Pai's P moves and figure out which one it is. Back on that sometime tonight, possibly. I really need to get a 360 or PS3...
