I would prefer 3/5 matches all around, not just for finals.

I'm going to toss my vote in for 3/5 for regular fights and 4/7 for finals. Our game has crazy fast pace.

Since we're already moving away from japan's stage selection rule I see no reason we can't adapt this rule too. (though they have the 1 and done format). Are their events just larger in general?

I think there is an upside to both systems. Adapt or die is pretty intense, but at the same time, giving people longer to adapt creates more mindgames. I'm definitely against 1 game in all but Team Tournament settings. My vote goes to 2/3, although I wouldn't mind in the slightest if we went 3/5.

Thinking about the Flash vs. Cozby FT10. The set didn't really take off until game 3 or 4. And just kept getting more fun to watch as it went.

    I like single elimination tournaments.

I also like everyone getting in a lot of game time before hand. emphasize casual play, bring up the skill set of everyone in a relaxed atmosphere and then introduce them to the Thunder Dome.

3 out of 5 is better for VF IMO.

You're really reading your opponent more than most fighting games. 3 out of 5 ensures a better understanding of your opponent in order to win.

    fixed that for you. :p.

BTW I also think 3/5 might actually be more fun to watch. It's kinda like the mike tyson effect in boxing. People were getting upset about paying to watch his fights because he'd knock the opponent out before spectators had a chance to get a few beers in. Final Showdown kinda has that feeling at the moment.

Pretty much, we are not Japan. 3/5 sounds good to me!

This can be more of a disadvantage to players IMO.

Why not keep some tricks in the bag for the matches that count? I would think there are countless times where a guy has beaten an opponent numerous times in casuals but when they face in the tourney those matches come back and bite him in the ass.

I think he's going for the "we do what we want. Who cares what japan does," mentality

to that guy I hold my hand up - close to his face - and say, "wah wah".

seriously. you can't play casuals and keep tricks in the bag? you can't play, try and elevate the players around you and then, when it counts, play to win, counting on being a superior player being the determining factor?

This is only my preference. I recognize there are others who want as many times up to bat as they can get but I like the stripped down version of tournaments where it is all on the line for that one match. no do-overs. lovers of drama and suprise twist endings should get DOWN on this: imagine the endless bitching about how someone was "supposed" to win and if they had only blocked low in round three everything would be different. pages of posts, man. everywhere.

when I was still on XBL all I ever saw was ranked matches, I thought single elim would be a dunk. a slam dunk.

oh I get that. and I've only just paid attention to this thread because Feck mentioned it existed so I really didn't read a lot of opinions but was that an argument put forward for the adoption of single elim? That the Japanese do it? that's equally odd.

There are better reasons for the adoption or dismissal of Single Elimination than "we are (not) Japanese"

I think 3 out of 5 should only be in winners finals and grand finals. 2 out of 3 anywhere else is just fine. changing the format I think is silly. In any fighting game you have to learn how to adapt and adapt FAST. Changing the format is like giving the loser a handicap to figure shit out in the long run. This is why I was so thrilled EVO did away with best of 7 in the grand finals. Either step up and think fast or step down.

Absolutely. So instead of talking about tournament formats, go recruit more players!
