Controller Vs. Stick

I play VF5 on the 360, and I am pretty new to fighting games, but find them amazingly addictive. I was alright at DOA and Soul Calibur, and play VF5 every day.
I recently came across a Hori VF5 fighting stick for the 360 and picked it up.
I was wondering what people think about playing on a controller vs playing with a fighting stick. I really haven't been able to get the stick down yet, and I find it frustrating so far.

Stick - always. Make sure you blue tack it down to a table as playing on your lap is just uncomfortable and in-precise. Get it stuck to a table and just learn how to use it. I use to swear by pads for Street Fighter as there were certain commands I couldn't get right on a stick, but after forcing myself to use only the stick I am now better with it than I ever was with the pad. Just stick with it (no pun intended) and you'll pick it up no problem and will be a better player for it.

lemmy plenty people play with the stick in their laps, it's a matter of preference.

    anyways controllers for fighter ftl.

there are some pad warriors here and there but they and an exeption to the rule. sticks ftw.

I prefer a pad (controller, whatev), but that's mostly because I grew up in Maine, and there's not a lot of arcades around... so I never got a chance to take to playing with a stick.

no question about it : stick is the right way to play VF.
and if u go to an arcade its fun to be able to play well there to

If you use the pad like a stick, basically use only the X,Y, and B buttons, it works fine. I recently began using the stick and do prefer that over the pad. But I can easily rock ass with a pad any day. I am not better or worse with one or the other.

These debates always bug me because people usually do not give a pad player credit. I am no expert by any means, but I know i can go up against a ton of stick players and excel.

Its a matter of choice I think, not a matter of " I will only be get better with a stick"....And I only reverted to forceful learning of the stick because i broke the down direction my 360 pad.

You can get better with a pad sure, beat other players - great!

But it's against the very spirit of the game.

So you can do maximum damage combos fine on a pad? How about Akira's KNEE and buffered dblplms? Wolf's maximum input throws?

    I can press /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif together on both stick and pad too but I find it highly unlikely that you can pull off shit like /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif> /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif> /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif> /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif consistently on a pad.

It's unlikely - however I've seen it in person. Our local Akira named castle uses pad. He was over a few times while we were still playing Evo. KNEE P SHRM DBLPM all day. Perfect buffering. DLC. You name it. It was insane.

    CASTLE! Where are you, man?

Damn, I can't ever imagine being able to do that shit on a pad, When I try KNEE in dojo on a pad takes me like 15 attempts for it to work lol.

I can't argue that. I just know that I play Jacky and play him quite well. I also dabble a bit with Aoi and Goh and seem to fare well though not nearly as advanced. I will say though, that the 360 pad has its issues with the Dpad. Its circular design is something to be annoyed by.

Still, my point is not that one is better or one gets you better, I just believe if someone has the diligence and dexterity they can excel with either. Disregarding the reply about the "spirit" of the game. Some people don't have that choice and reading the forums may cause a potentially great player to think they can never play this because of no stick.

To be fair I know an Akira player who does all Akira's hard stuff on a pad no problems. Weird, but do-able.

Yeah I was only half joking about the spirit of the game. Play how you can and if you enjoy it then great. The most important thing is that you play it. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I just got my second stick, both Hori's, the first is the VF5 one, the second the rarer DOA4 one (someone traded it in at my local game store, bought it mega cheap).

My TV is pretty low to the ground... table it is on is only about 2-3 ft off the ground. It is a 40 inch 1080p TV. I was wondering what you all think about the next big joystick issue:
    Placement.

Standing? I've having some real issues with the stick on my lap...

I still use the 360 controller exclusively. I jump between the the analog and digital depending on commands im doing for example i use the analog for simple moves/combos/dodging but I use the digital for commands like kage's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and TFT > /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif.

I've gotten the 360 controller to work with good results so far. No hard complaints from me. But that PS controller adapter does sound nice XD

I can use the 360 controller pretty good too however the minor inaccuracy of the controller makes me want to use a better pad. I can use the right pad as well as I could a good stick and can buffer most moves I need to do with the D pad even though I will use the stick part of it if the 270 degree throw or Half Circle forward or back throw from time to time but I don't feel like I have to use it every time because I know how to do the better throws accurately with a pad as well. I don't want to deal with the inaccuracies of the 360 pad so I bought a PS2 adapter and I am still waiting for it and I ordered it at least a few weeks back. I will be so happy when I can use the superior and accurate PS2 controller over the 360 pad. I can't stand the pad inaccuracies in ranking matches when the matches really count knowing lag takes away enough of my game already

There is a mod for the 360 pad that makes it just as accurate as anything else. I believe it involves trimming some rubber form around the pad.

Hey advise me. I've never really frequented arcades, but for a long while now I've been playing on my ps2 pad holding the d-pad normally, but drumming my fingers across the buttons similar to what one would do with a stick. This is especially evident with 3D fighters. Does this lead you all to believe that I should use stick? Because I'm mostly worried with the joystick movement.
