First off, Im not trying to treat this game like DOA, its different and i get that. I dont understand how to use the reversals that are part of This game tho.

Problem is im fighting my friend silent9ight and hes using pai's reversals on me like nothing and i can barely pull off 1 or 2 a fight: Hes using 2 or 3 a Round!

Granted I throw a lot of punches but so does everyone else and i cant do it nearly as effectively or as often as when im seeing everyday. even the ai pulls it off more often than i do.

it took a week to figure out How to do the offensive/defensive thing, still gettin down When to use it.. i cant do the reverals to save my life..

im looking at the command list while im playing but it aint helping.. im not that good at this to begin with but im making no progress alone or against friends cause they use different characters..

    any thoughts?

The easiest way to use reversals is when you are 1) at a disadvantage, and 2) you can predict your opponent will definitely attack you with something that Vanessa can reverse (her reversals are more limited than Pai).

For example, after a blocked /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, do another /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif. Train your opponent to try to punish you with a fast mid punch or kick. Expecting opponent will attack with a mid punch or mid attack after a blocked /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, you can input the reversal.

Also, doing reversals based on character attack animation is very difficult, unless the move is very slow. So it can only be really used by anticipating what your opponent is going to do.

First, you have to know that reversals depends not only on the level but also on the class of the attack you want to reverse. unlike Pai's, vanessa's reversals doesn't reverse elbows class or knees class attacks. You have also to know that there are many non-reversible class attacks like HCR and MCR (high and mid circular kicks), double punchs or kicks, back attacks etc... only Aoi can reverse these attacks... Hope this help

I agree. You're much better off using her Sabakis to stop the attack before you have to reverse in the first place.

Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Pai is a counter machine. Vanessa is a damage monster and has a surprisingly deep defensive game, but reversals just aren't part of it.

"I see." says the blind man.

huge help.. partialy explains why 9ight was caving my face in last night (one other part is hes already better than i am).. my timing was probably way off most of the time anyway..

im only really looking to reverse high and low punches consistently.. high punches start the usual panic/noobie button mashes and i just despise the low 'check' punch that is pretty much standard on or offline (even the ai does it)

i gotta search sabakis now.. still workin on the vf5 language.. im assuming the equivalent doa term would be 'crushes" ie virtua rock / paper / scissors..

I prefer the term interrupt. A sabaki interrupts an attack to deliver a nasty blow against your opponet. They don't always do a ton of damage, but it's a great way to avoid damage and do damage instead.

Of course a sabaki is easy to pull off, but not as easy to hit. Still, even if you don't hit them, ir you can stop the attack then all is good.

DoA has sabakis. They are moves that go through the opponents attack, kind of pushing them aside. Lei Fang has a few. But the counter system there kinda ruins the effect that sabakis have. And there really isn't a crush system in VF like DoA. They actually have completely different meanings. A crush on VF I believe means that a move "crushes" or beats another move because it has the same hit properties but better power. While in DoA it simply goes over/under certain move types.

Thanks so much guys.. already doing better vs 9ight (at least i did last night but he said he was injured so it doesnt count)..

lil bit of history - of the 3000 fights i had in DOA4, i fought silent9night around 800 times.. of which i lost more than 60%.. the guy knows how to fight and is learning vf5 much faster than i am..

lil bit of research has shown Vanessa's reversals to be less versatile than pai's (she counters 8 moves with 2 reversals compared to Vanessa's 2 reversals countering 1 move each).. and this doesnt include throws or just gettin to close to the lil b!tch..

Progress is a slow process, and i aint got nothin but time.

Just remember, Pai is one of the slowest characters, so hit and run tactics could help you since Vane is one of the quickest. Never forget those other little advantages.

Edit: And in defensive, if the stick is held at neutral, most punches, she just holds onto and with a few button presses you can make 9ight wary of pulling back a nub when he attacks.

i must be thinking of another character cause 9ight's pai is sooo much faster than my Vanessa.. she ducks highs and some mids when he starts combos with a low punch and i can never quit hit her first when we square off with highs or even mid punches..

Learn her Offensive stance. From intruder step she can do all sorts of nasty stuff.

i dunno if its my controller (its a lil messed up but i dont know how much it affects my gameplay) or if i just stink but i can barely get some moves to work..

i love the intruder step but i cant get her to grab or takedown or just do a combo before or after i try to do it.. i want to get a hori stick but i cant justify a 40-60 dollar controller if i still suck with a standard controller setup

Well she has this nasty kick from there that you can use beyond Pai's regular range and surprise people. Get your controller fixed, I would recommend getting a stick, and then look up her black book.

im topping out right now.. had the same problem with cristie in DOA.. got to a certain point and never got any better from there.. its like my fingers turn to jello using any more than the same 4 sequences..

quest mode akira's eat me alive.. just one lame power move after another.. stun, punch throw stun punch throw..

i spam these boards while im playing cause the alternative is smashing another tv and i cant afford to replace the last one i broke.. this one is over a grand and its the last working tv in the house..

furthermore ive spent the last 10 minutes in the dojo doing the same move for no reason.. i can input it maybe once in 100 tries and the demo doesnt help..

every other move on the command list might as well be DOA's Raijin all over again..

forget the updates.. whats the max time allowed for completing dojo time attack? imma do a search but this ridiculous..

the inputs say im not even pressing the buttons i THINK i pressing..

The BEST way for you to practice her reversals and sabakis is to play against another vanessa ;)

Think about it - you know her moveset, you know her frames and you know when she's most likely to throw out a move - particularly [3] [K], it's so gratifying grabbing the opponent's leg and slugging them - WELL! *face bash*

I love playing other Vanessas, good training.

Also, i find (online) Kage good for reversal training - neutral punch inashi stops punch happy spammers and [1] [P] + [K] destroys those who like to take advantage of his safe mid kicks. Add [4] [6] [K] if they are elbow happy and they are basically locked down.

...i bet he develops oedipal complex now that Dural is based on vane

The secret with reversals is knowing against which character you should try them out. For example, since you mentioned Pai, her most dangerous move, that while rising punch that floats you for half your lifebar, that's double handed so you can't reverse it. Her jumping hopkicks? Double kicks. Flipkicks? Can't reverse those either. Vane can't reverse or sabaki a couple of key Pai moves, ergo i open the game from OS. Only if i see that it's one of those punch happy players i switch to her DS.

I think that's the point of getting a stick, because playing with a controller is a handicap (for most). If you have the money I say get it.

i gotta try fighting against other vanessa's online.. havent run into a lot of those yet.. mostly pai's and eileens, jacky, a few akiras.. i dont play much tho, cept against friends, cause i get really frustrated really fast..

helps to know what i cant reverse, kinda found that out the hard way over the last week partially cause i didnt read the instructions manual (or her command list) very closely

oh yeah, my controller is allergic to the intruder step.. 9 times outta ten i either do something else or i get ducked behind and thrown or punched in the face..

i dont like being punched in the face..

    edit 2

i use OS a lot.. most of the time really
