I know that Plague has a huge event and tournament planned. This is not an attempt to undermine that. The Championship Gaming Series is an extremely high profile tournament series that is both sponsored and televised by DirectTV. This year, they have decided not only to include fighting games in it's mostly PC game based Tournament, but to include Virtua Fighter 5 for the PS3. The event will be in Anaheim, CA with the dates between March 30th to April 1st. Here is the official press release.

To celebrate their 10th anniversary, Buy.com, the internet superstore, will be hosting the first major West Coast video game festival and BYOC LAN. The Buy.com LAN 2007 is set to take place on March 30th, ending on April 1st, at the Hyatt Regency Orange County in Anaheim, California. It will consist of tournaments for both casual and competitive gamers for the PC and console, and will also a private 200-seat BYOC. Though the list of prizes for the event have not been released yet, the announcement does reveal that tens of thousands of dollars in cash and sponsor product prizes will be given.

Another interesting bit of news revealed in this announcement is that this Buy.com LAN 2007 event will serve as an official qualifier for DirecTV's Championship Gaming Series with their Counter-Strike: Source (5v5), Dead or Alive 4 (1v1), and Project Gotham Racing 3 (1v4) LAN tournaments. Also, the event will be the host of the very first Virtua Fighter 5 tournament for the PS3 console. Having come from a background of the Team Sportscast Network, I can tell you these events pay a huge amount of money. The PC side of things, especially Counter-Stike and Quake 4 usually get a miminum of $10,000 for first prize. This event will be huge for the VF community if it can be pulled off.

...this is actually a huge thing and perfect for the VF community as a whole. Especially with the amount of VF players that will be in Socal at this time...hmmm

Actually Brian, I've seen how these guys work (I'm from the DoA community).

I actually, no offense to the topic maker) suggest that you not get involved with these dudes. No joke, I'll explain more in person on Saturday with Jared. You REALLY don't want to get involved with them, even if it is for TV coverage.

Trust me, this TV show and event is complete and total garabage.

Whoa - this is crazy news all the way around. I look forward to your report on these guys (I'm guess these guys are buy.com/LAN and not DirecTV), Dan.

He means because of how much of a joke they are with their tourney rules, and how some of the members of the doa community really make themselves look silly on TV. I think as long as the VF community doesn't go the way that Master has for the DOA community, things will be fine.

Here are some videos of DOA4 at CGS:

It's more than that, it's cause they really aren't run by gamers at all. It's a television show.

I'm not saying they forever will be trash, but currently. They are not a good organization. If you are looking to get VF5 big, this isn't the way. EVO is far better and should get far more priority.

Actually, this announcement isn't saying VF5 is at CGS. It is just saying that the first VF5 tournament will be hosted. It just so happens that at the same tourney you can qualify for some other CGS games.

I rather someone from VFDC represent a VF tourney than someone that plays on occasion and then somehow gets on tv and makes the game a joke.

My guess is this tourney is a setup for the tv show. I dont see the harm in just moving the Socal Tourney venue to Anaheim. We will get more heads, better prizes, and some exposure

btw I have no doubt EVO will be a better tourney, but to me the more exposure that VF5 gets the better

    Here's the thing though brian.

    They are hosting it.

Not us, we have no say in what rules they use or weither or not we will even be able to play the Team tournament we want so much.

The freedom and fun of the events we are used too are taken out in exchange for the exposure.

I mean you have a reasonable idea and it would work if the organization wasn't so horrible.

But for all we know, they can run the tournament like Doa4. First to 5 single round (yes.... 1 round) matches. AT LARGEST LIFE SETTING. Oh and you to play the same stage all five rounds. No switching stages.

Sorry but, I really don't want to play even VF5 on that kind of setting.

I know that a lot of tournament organizers like WCG, CPL, WSVG, and CGS know how to run a killer PC tournament, but lack when it comes to a fighting game tournament. This is where the community comes in. If these events are successful in their infancy, then we as a community can educate the tournament organizers and let them know what the standard rules are and such. It has to start somewhere. Evo is a great tournament, but does not have the sponsorships or the money to back it like some of the other tournament that I had previously mentioned. Yes, they did just pick up Toyota, but to put it in perspective:

Total Prize Purse Evo2k in 2006 (for ALL games) - $80,000
Total Prize Purse WSVG in 2006 (for Quake4 alone) - $500,000 + 6 Rolex watches
Total Prize Purse WSVG in 2006 (for ALL games) - $2.5 Million + Rolex's + PCs.

In 2005, the CPL Painkiller World Tour had $1 Million allocated to it. First Prize for one of the 6 Qualifiers was $15,000. If you won the whole thing (which a player named Vo0 almost did), you had a potential of winning a total of $300,000 for one game alone. Compare this to the $2100 that is offered at an Evo qualifier, you can see my interest at getting more fighters at one of the big name PC tournaments.

With exposure such as the WCG, WSVG, CGS... etc, it will mean that not only does the game get exposure, but other smaller tournaments will gather momentum as well. With that momentum will come larger prize purses and sponosrs.

It has to "start" somewhere. The PC community dominates the Western Competetative Video Game Scene. I will do what I can through my contacts at TsN to get the rules for the fighters changed to the standardized rule set.

This information is inaccurate. For the official post visit THIS thread.

This is not a CGS event and, to date, CGS is not a part of the event. Feel free to look at the official JC Media + Entertainment or Buy.com websites for more details.

JC Media has professional experience running fighting game tournaments and the standard rules will apply. Please visit our website for the official rules [to be posted shortly].

Thank you for the enthusiasm regarding this event...we hope to see everyone out there! We just want to ensure that the most accurate and current information is available to everyone.

    Respectfully.

This actually looks pretty good. Maybe 2 tourneys for Socal?? We just need confirmation on the rules

The VF5 tournament is scheduled for Sunday.

So lemme brainstorm here for a minute:
Thursday/Wednesday - Yosuke arrives, other dudes too according to Plague.
Friday night- Team tournament held by Srider, teams to be decided. Rules, money entry, etc. to be decided.
Saturday night- Plagues Single's tournament with $20 entry fee, etc. etc. massive party.
Sunday- JC Media tournament with guaranteed money prize.

Rules would be very very appreciated right now. I'll withdraw my comments concerning this event considering CGI is not involved with it. But it would be very very nice to have the rules available.
