What up yawl...its almost Christmas time and I was looking at a new TV for the family (well mostly for me) and I came across something I never heard before. DLP, I knew of LED and Plasmas but DLP caught my eye because of the price. I currently own a 37inch 1080p Olivia which is pretty nice buuut I got it almost 3 years ago and I feel its time for an upgrade. This is what I want to purchase http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HL61A650-6...25630089&sr=8-1 if any of you guys own a DLP let me know of its pros and cons, well mostly cons because everything I seem to find on Google and even you tube makes it sound like the greatest thing ever.

DLP is terrible for gaming. You'll get input lag. It's beautiful and priced right for watching movies, though.

I've been researching TVs for gaming and BluRay. Right now, Sony W4100 (LCD) series is the best performance and best deal for the money. It is nearly problem-free compared to other LCDs. Key feature is 120Hz refresh rate.

If you have the time and patience, read about TVs here.

If the key feature is 120hz then both DLP and LCD tv's have it. Key to 120hz is to make sure the motion blur feature works well.

My recommendation is if you get a TV over 60in get a DLP
If you get something 55in or less get an LCD
For LCD look at Sony and Samsung Brands
    For DLP Samsung of Mitsubishi.

Get a nice return policy and make sure you test it when you get home. Timing games like Golf or Music are nice ways to test lag

good luck and get the tv that you like

Yea the DLP is a Samsung and its a 61incher.....Hey Brisal why DLP over 60? and Plague I didnt find anything in your link that said DLP is terrible for gaming....

    this is from wiki.

Response time in video games may be affected by upscaling lag. While all non-CRT HDTVs have some lag when upscaling lower resolution input to their native resolution, DLPs are commonly reported to have noticeably longer delays. Newer consoles such as the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 do not have this problem as long as they are connected with HD-capable cables.

I've played VF5 on DLP and experienced lag. Maybe the latest DLPs do not have this problem.

That link was general, sorry about that. AVS Forum appears to me to be THE place for researching TVs and all things audio and video. I've spent much time on it researching televisions.

Brisal73 knows more about TVs and buying TVs than I do.

DLP size because you get a bigger bang for your buck
I have a 65in Mitsubishi DLP. Playing most games on it if fine for me. Virtua Fighter is a different story because everyone is use to playing there game on a certain display. Each display is different.

For Example... Plagues Direct View is different from his pc monitors, which is different from my dlp, to my Samsung LCD, to LA Akiras LCDs, and finally to the tournament displays.

Again go for what works for you. Just make sure it has a great return policy so you can return it if you don't like it when you get it home.

<span style='font-family: Comic Sans MS'>Thanks for all of the information guys; I'm in the market for a new TV too. My dilemma is between a plasma and LCD; plasma because I love watching a good (blu-ray) movie and LCD for gaming of course. I can't get both so I am leaning towards the LCD since I will come out with great gaming experience and pretty good movie experience as long as I get the right LCD. Most likely a Sony LCD.</span>

Go LCD. Just make sure the blacks are strong. If you watch movies late at night you might notice how some shadows or dark scenes are gray instead of black

yea dude my LCD is not good at showing blacks...esp. when I have the lights on...I was watching The Strangers and I had to make the house as dark as possible...anyways you said you own a DLP but your recommending LCD’s are you basing that on today’s models? Because I seems like Samsung has made huge improvements on DLP’s.

Anyways is this dude full of shit then?

Remember: Black Friday is coming on the 28th.

    Last year I scored a Samsung 40 Inch 1080p HDTV for $1100.

For that price, you could probably get a 52 inch 1080p TV (120hz maybe) on Black Friday. I'll be keeping up on this myself so if I see anything that looks good, I'll post here.

i have a toshiba dlp from ~2005 and it's actually a very good tv. the only huge problem with it is that every 300-600 hours of use, you have to buy a new bulb (easily replaceable, as it's intended to be). contrary to most hearsay, i haven't experienced any lag on it at all (even with guilty gear accent core, a game that lags on most displays that aren't crt).

if you were to get a dlp today, i'd recommend a samsung, as they have the LED bulbs (meaning they're brighter and last forever).

as far as lcd's go, i can't say i'm a fan. though, if you wanted to get one, i'd recommend the sony bravia xbr, as it's one of the few lcd's i've seen that can actually produce a visually appealing black level, response time and dynamic contrast.

Is there a low-maintence HDTV that won't need replacement crap after say 1000-1500hrs?

120hz frame interpolation ( lots of different trade names for it, e.g. motionflow ) is a really bad idea for gaming; as if you need any more sources of lag.

As far as display technology, I have an LCOS set that was a pretty reasonable compromise when I got it, am still happy with it, and tested it to have negligible lag. I don't think anyone sells LCOS except in ultra high end front projectors anymore though, unfortunately.

If i was getting a set today, I'd take a hard look at plasma. They've come a long way in the past couple of years.

The Contrast Ratio Game: Playing with Numbers
    http://www.practical-home-theater-guide.com/contrast-ratio.html

I found this to be an interesting read. Don't get dazzled by the big numbers!

As for the 120Hz displays that are on the market now, my question is what source(s) provide a 120Hz signal? If you're only displaying 60Hz for gaming, and less for TV/Movies, then it's kind of a waste, no?

Im not messing with any HDTV's. The TV's lags coupled with the Live lag make it too unbearable. I have a 52'' T.V. that not high Def but Projected and with the VGA cable i get a beautiful image. My friend 42 inch have a 8ms lag to it and you can feel it offline in VF.

Not sure if the dude is full of shit since the link you gave doesn't work.

I chose DLP for a few things:
    #1 Blacks are really great
    #2 Colors Pop
#3 Zero chance of Burn in
#4 Price plus the size of the screen is cheaper than other Tvs
#5 Ability to buy a Lamp. Most hate this, but it's like buying a fresh TV every other year for $200

    Reasons to hate DLP:
#1 Lag can be a problem, but newer set are way better than older technology
#2 Buying a new Lamp. Depending on how much TV you watch you can be doing this at least once a year.

To me the 120hz thing is just a new feature that you should consider getting. TVs for last few years have had a gimmick to keep the industry fresh. First it was DVI, then 1080p, then HDMI, to now 120hz.
If your going to spend the money you might as well get the tv that has the newest technology.

I would avoid Plasma because the price you will pay doesn't make that much of a picture difference compared to a similar LCD or DLPs.

and keep in mind that both LCD and Plasma can create burn in on your screen and trust me after paying that much money seeing burn in will make your mouth drop and a tear fall from your eye.

    By Brand
    Plasma = Pioneer
    LCD = Sony and Samsung
    DLP = Samsung and Mitsubishi

also, if you have a crt monitor, you can just use that. no lag and if you have a good one, it'll look better than most tv's currently on the market.

that's what i use for my games.

LCD does not suffer from Burn In. In some rare cases it can suffer from Image Persistence but this is almost always temporary. Most importantly it is caused by a very, very, long term static image on the screen. Unless you leave VF or anything frozen in place on the screen for days upon days then you have nothing to worry about.

Also Modern Plasma televisions do not get the Burn In effect nearly as much as they did a decade ago. With technology and its advances Plasma has nearly equaled LCD in performance and visual quality.

Finally, DLP is consider the 3rd in the list. It has Rainbow effect which many hate, myself included. In the past, maybe 10 years ago, the DLP was the best for size vs cash ratio, but not anymore. LCD is greatly improving in size and cost availability while Plasma has huge models for great prices. DLP is a projection based TV also, so again this hurts quality. The only benefit is the fact that the TV will last longer. LCD's and Plasmas have a 70-100k average lifespan. DLP's having a light bulb for projection make this span a lot larger only because you can simply purchase a new one for a few hundred dollars.

If you want the best go with LCD. Then Plasma, then DLP.
