Do you think combining buttons on the Control pad is cheating?

Like using R1 to be [P]+[K]+[G] or R2 to be [G]+[P]...

I don't think it's really cheating but it's pretty cheap and scrubby though.
People should play the game properly - it's not like you can do that in the arcades, so why should you be able to at home?

no. If you lose, it's because you lost to the person. No one told you to not block/reversal/dodge that p+k+g move that your opponent tapped with one button. No one told you to stand there when your opponent tapped r1 for p+g when you could have inputted a throw escape or duck the throw attempt. Just my thoughts.

generally i would say that match outcome is down to skill, yomi, etc. not button layouts......but i'd feel pretty cheated if i lost to some guy who continually managed to SPoD me in the final of a high-stakes tournament using the "PKG button" - especially if i knew he could not do SPoD the more conventional way...

I wouldn't care. Pressing P+K+G is so easy anyway, who cares if he has a shortcut for it? The spod is difficult regardless. The only way I'd feel like the guy was getting away with murder is if he programmed the entire spod onto a single button press.

it was a bad example of mine, but hopefully the point was understood nonetheless.

...the controllers are not as good as sticks for VF( how many threads say that?) - they are not designed to have you pushing more than one button at once - I can't think of any onther non-fighting game that does this..therefore use the shoulder buttons...

I bet in that box is a 15cm x 10cm board with some wire connecting to the buttons why build a large box, what if some one mistakes that as a bomb (Americans /versus/images/icons/tongue.gif )

Ura, I think there's a better likelyhood of that being mistaken as a tank! /versus/images/icons/laugh.gif

It's a lot harder to do diagonal taps on the playstation directional pad than on a stick. So you get a tradeoff. Easier P+K+G in exchange for inconsistance crouch dash. /versus/images/icons/grin.gif

Of course, it goes without saying that you can't really play Virtua Fighter without a good joystick.

That said, I think it's alright to combine buttons on a joypad if it helps you. By my experience, I always played Saturn Virtua Fighter (1 and 2) with the "beginner" setting, which sets the X button to Guard+Punch, the Y button to Guard+Kick, and the Z button to all three. It's easier to hit Y with the pad (using your thumb) than hitting A and C buttons (with your fingers).

Naturally, if you play this way too much, you'll be sorely out of practice for competition at the arcade. In the end, you really need to become used to using the original buttons. Just my two cents.
