I clicked. But in honesty I would prefer that companies spend their PR money towards removing patent regulations in poorer countries and provide cheap drugs to those who desperately need it.

$100,000 can be seen as a very cheap marketing tool for the drug Manufacturer Bristol-Myers.

basically saying that even if a ton of people do this, its cheap advertising for them. To get the same amount of people normally would require a lot more money.

I was thinking along the lines of , "how do the patent regulations affect AIDS drugs in poorer countries?"

    Hey there,

I'll doubly explain both of my points since I think I badly worded some things anyway.

Dean is on the right track about my advertising quip: Bristol-myers is donating a maximum of $100,000 to aids research and community programs (I actually haven't found a breakdown to where the money is going, it could just go to internal R&D) and for this maximum sum they get a massive, massive viral marketing program running that promotes their HIV drug. Pretty cheap campaign to get your company and drug injected into the public conscousness. Still, money is money and the battle against AIDS needs both money and public attention.

The patent process is fantastic for a company to make money off of something they've developed. I have no qualms with it per se but in instances like this it hurts the world. These drugs are expensive and poor countries can't afford them. 2.4 million people died in Africa from AIDS this year alone and the numbers of infected individuals keep rising. The growth rate of AIDS cases is actually quite staggering.

In order to stem the rise and extend the lifespans of people who would otherwise die maltreated or untreated the patents on certain drugs should be lifted so that generics can be manufactured by the poorer countries and given or sold at a fraction of the current rate. This benefits everyone. Even the patent holders.

The fact that there isn't an initiative forthcoming from the worlds governments or the pharma companies themselves is rather disgusting. The current situation holds things in check and it actually reduces the climate of evolution. The environment in the development of these drugs and programs is so insular because of the profit model that the world situation can't help but get worse.

relaxing the patent restrictions would help.

    smurf its free, if you're stingy on something free. . . . . . . . .

side comment: you could say its free advertising, but most people who do this probably dont even have AIDS, so no potential market. Either way its still for a good cause.
