    Anyone besides me watching?

So far the games have been great and Holland are appearing as the strongest teams but that's not to say they have it in the bag.

Sure they absolutely decimated France and Italy with a three goal lead in each game (and yet only by two against Romania) but I feel that the other teams that have went through will prove enough of a challenge.

I am pretty annoyed with France's performance though. After edging us (Scotland) out of our qualifier by the skin of their scrotums they put up little effort to make it through the group stages.

Anyway, Portugal vs Germany is on in like half an hour.

    Ronaldo vs Ballack.

    Should be a great game.

Emphasis on the "should"; the whole season leading up now has been rife with many dissapointments and unexpected results so what should be a great game could end up pish (Italy vs France).

It's nice seeing the netherlands being so strong for a change.
It's making me proud of my country's footbal team for once.

To shamelessly steal some journo's line:

"If this is 'Total Football' where can I get some?"

Really strong performance from the Dutch.

The team with the longest name.

Being a Celtic fan I wanted to get a shirt with Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink on the back (Before he started cocking shit up) but after realising I would need a bank loan to get all those letters I ended up getting the "wizard of Oz" Scott McDonald on my back.

    Australia's greatest export.

I've been watching the euros where possible, the timezone difference makes it a real bitch to watch games live though. But I got up early for the Germany v Portugal match.

I had some money on Portugal going all the way, but looks like Germany's dominance in the air was just too much. I think their recent history in the World Cup was also a factor. Scolari must be livid, but I can't help but wonder if his Chelsea announcement had some kind of distracting impact on the team.

Croatia vs Turkey is hard to split for me. Both teams had shaky starts but finished quite strong to make it out of the group stage. But, Turkey seemed to suffer some casualties through suspensions so I'm not sure they'll be able to field their full strength team. I'm going to go with Croatia by a goal.

The Dutch look irresistable now and I think will be too strong for the Russians. However, if Russia manages an upset (a massive upset, mind you) then I hope Russia can pull off another cinderella story like Greece before them and take the whole thing. Besides, they have Hiddink behind them and as an Australian football fan, we all have a soft spot for Gus being our ex-National coach who got us to the World Cup!

Then there's Spain v Italy. I really, really, really hope Spain belt the shit out of the Azzurri (revenge for Australia from the last WC) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif How Italy have managed to get through the group I have no idea. It's really tragic that Mutu had his penalty saved to keep Italy alive. Had it gone it, it would have been all but over for Italy. Now I just hope we all don't live to regret that moment!

LOL, the luck of the Champions!! And Buffon proved once and again whey he's the top keeper in the world. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

I just read a poll in Gazzetta.it that 85% of Italians voted Spain will win. What? I'm very confident they won't. Crossing my fingers though!

Man, everybody has a soft spot for Guus... Australia, South-Korea, Holland itself, etc.

I think many would prefer seeing Guus coaching the Dutch (in fact, the people would've chosen about five coaches over van Basten). But there's simply more cash in it abroad. We call him Guus Geluk (Lucky Guus) in Holland. But with his track record you can hardly call it luck. This is the fourth time he pulled a country further in an international tournament than it ever went before.

There's one major plus for Holland now. Portugal is out. We haven't beaten Portugal in the last twenty to thirty years now (lost or tied the last eleven duels I believe). We got eliminated by them during the last World and Euro Cups... Maybe its make-believe, but that matchup is cursed.

I hope Spain prevails over Italy. A repeat of Holland - Italy might seem to be in our favour, but I think that can end very badly indeed. Players knowing how to handle their opposites on the field. Adaptation in tactics to the uncommon way the current Dutch team plays in comparison to how they used to.

    Seidon:
Vennegoor's shirt is awesome. Instead of putting his name in an arch they should make a circle of it around the number on his back... I thought it was a shame when Giovanni van Bronckhorst put 'Gio' instead of 'van Bronckhorst' on his back a couple of years back.

    Cadorna:
I think the Italians are a little bit shocked by the difficulty they encountered in getting through the preliminaries. After tying the Romanians and losing to the Dutch they've lost confidence a bit. The Italians are a fickle people though. If their squad shows a bit of flair in the next match the entire country will be behind them again 100%.

    Buffon best in the world?

My money would be on Van der Sar or Petr Cech.

The best keeper so far in the competition has been none other than the Holy Goalie himself, Artur Boruc.

I enjoyed the match last night and the paper today said Ronaldo is set on leaving for Real Madrid.

Personally I don't the right move but it's his choice.

I just hope that when and if he does go Madrid get thumped by ManU.

I was rooting for Sweden but Russia was simply better this time. Not luck or anything, they deserved the victory. You could see it clearly that Zlatan's knee was troubling him. Often times he passed the ball and just stood there and teammates passed the ball back expecting him to rush forward. Too bad, he is one of my favorite forwards.

Man, what a crazy match! I'm so happy for Russia and Hiddink.

All group winners have been knocked out so far, but I hope the trend doesn't continue with the last quarter final match between Spain and Italy match. Spain FTW!

If I could place a bet, I would place it on Russia now /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif Total dark horse, but that play against Holland should give a clear signal they got what it takes and that they are back to the top of the world.

The Finnish commentator said, that the Russian gas millionaires gotta lay quite big stack of rubles on the table so that Andrei Arshavin stays in St.Petersburg Zenit. Right at that, that was magnificent play from him and the rest of team of course. A breakthrough similar to Ribery's a few years back.

Holland played incredibly crap the other night compared to earlier performances.

Arshavin is a great player, I laughed as he basically led Zenit to win the EUFA cup and put out Rangers.

    Patriotic country then?

At least you aren't like the English supporters.

I was down there when they got put out of the world cup.

It's like the great depression all over again.

Us Scottish, we have one outcome: Drink till you're sober.

We rarely taste success and when we do we get even more pished than normal.
