So I am kinda at a crossroad with this, so I figured I would post about this. So it has been announced that Evo 2020 will be from July 31st to August 2nd at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. I know they haven't announced yet if VF will be a tournament there or not, but I am aware that it was a tournament the last 1 or 2 years. I am curious to know what everyone's Evo experience was like that have been, not just for VF specifically, but as an event altogether?

I ask this because I have been thinking about whether to go to Evo 2020 or not, and it is gonna depend on a lot of things:

#1 I have actually never been anywhere west of me past Tennessee (I live in North Carolina), so this would be a first time out west, which I believe Nevada is considered midwest I think. It would be a good opportunity to check out.

#2 Having VF as a tournament/side tournament would be some good incentive considering the different kinds of players that have come out to Evo and have played in the previous VF tournaments.

#3 The main issue for me is the fact that if I did go to Evo, VF would pretty much be the only tournament I would actually participate in. I mean those that know me know I stream VF all the time, so I am more driven for that game than any other fighting game. Don't get me wrong, Tekken 7 and Samurai Shodown would be cool to play, but those would just be fillers for me. For all those that go to Evo here, do y'all mainly go for VF or other games as well?

A long time ago, I used to be hyped for Evo and would always be jealous if I met people that have been to Evo, because I always wanted to go, but with a lot of the games now, it just isn't hype for me anymore. It's more like I would go to just say, "Hey, I finally went to an Evo" sort of deal for me. Like NMTC, that was a pure VF only gathering/event. THAT was fun! That was so fun I didn't want it to end! That was Evo for me to be honest. Like now, I would be super hyped if Sega Cup was brought back, I would totally make advance plans to go. Sucks that I missed that boat, but it is what it is.

What do y'all think? If VF gets announced for Evo 2020, anyone planning to go? Does Evo in general still excite y'all as FG fans?

Pretty sure we will be running VF again in the EVO side tourny area.

I don't know what the plans are for Evo 2020 yet, but I doubt I'll be able to come by myself again next year. I do urge the usual suspects to please contact Evo and try to get the game up and running for a side tournament again!

    1) Yes, Las Vegas and surrounding areas area lot of fun, definitely a good excuse to travel there is Evo. Check out the strip, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam etc while you're there.

    2) Virtua Fighter usually pulls good numbers for a tournament, and you'll meet a lot of people you've only spoken to online! It's a good hangout, and if you can bring consoles you can play tons of casuals on the event floor too.

    3) Virtua Fighter is my main game as well, but it's also a lot of fun to play the other games I'm interested in. I played lots of Super Turbo and SamSho while I was there, and against players I would normally never get to play. For the games on main stage, it's a ton of fun to watch the finals as part of the enormous crowd too!

I definitely think it's worth going if you can, don't think of it as going for one single reason, roll up all the things you want to do and games you want to play as part of the whole experience.

    Good question.

All I have to say, is what many many gamers, have been saying, for close to 2 decades:
Evo is, and was always overrated. And the fighting games, that are mainstreamed in that tournament, for the past close to 2 decades, are over rated, super basic, blandish, and unfortunately, boring as #^%#!

And way to basic and clunky.:p

For years, even before I knew what evo was, I would always hear gamers say, that same thing as well and alot more. That's where certain fighting game fans, came up with the term, "evo friendly fighting games," was born. And unfortunately, VF is not a basic, evo friendly fighting game, or as I call it, it's not a Sony styled fighting game. So it makes sense, as to why, Virtua Fighter doesn't mainstream at Evo anymore. And most of the so called, mainstream fgc audience, that loves and follows evo, would not appreciate VF, because it doesn't fit in those categories. Or what they categorise, as current mainstream gaming. (Aka heavily nerf patched, basic combat, and heavily watered down, bland gameplay with lots of wave dashing etc. )

The only games, that kinda hold my interest at Evo, or any current game tournament, is Soul Calibur (when it was a good game, and not a guest character, watered down, nerf patched fest,) and of course Virtua Fighter. And sometimes Killer Instinct, SF2 Hyper Fighting, Super Turbo, Dark Stalkers etc. Well more old school games, held at side tourneys and evo side tourneys.

Also, I noticed that for a long time now, that the fgc is alot smaller than it used to be. Like waaaaaaay smaller. Literally.

Yeah, this is a good breakdown. I also have a friend in Vegas as well that I haven't seen in a year or two, so at least I know I would have stuff to do.

Thank you for your honesty! I have heard a lot lately that Evo is seen as overrated. I guess in the end, it would really be something for me to check off the bucket list. I feel the same way about the tournament lineup. Like I would be so down for if they had tournaments in VF4 Evo, VF5FS, Garou: Mark Of The Wolves, USF4, SFA3, MK9, and SS4. Like that would be perfect for me and would invest in. I feel like ultimately my fear is that I won't get the best possible enjoyable experience from Evo like I did from NMTC.

You'd be surprised at how many of those games probably will have side tournaments at Evo. There's a large community area with lots of DIY tournaments for old games.
I recall alongside VF there was ST, CVS2, Sailor Moon, Darkstalkers and KoF games at the DIY area.
