I've been searching for info, but haven't had much luck.. y'see, I'm confused. How exactly is this new-fangled quest mode supposed to work... and does it replace kumite as the meat of the game, or is it additional? Has such info even been confirmed?

I think the idea is you travel to real japanese hotspot arcades (they show a pic with a city map and a shop, arcade, and something else) ... and you try to beat the local champions there and rank up. Then you win some cash, buy items or whatever, and move on to the next hotspot.

And your ultimate goal in quest mode is to fight your way to earn the right to compete in the national tournament and win it. Very exciting!!! /versus/images/icons/laugh.gif

Or as is commonly known as a NERD SIM, BE the nerd.

Nah, the Mukki Akira sim would be for more exciting. You could pay $800 a month to play VF4 like a king at the arcades. XD

Only nerds would buy a full on nerd sim.

Do the top players make money through the game?

Only a few do - I'm pretty sure Kyasao, Chibita, and Bun Bun (among others) get sponsored by Sega for kumite tours. Several other strong players work by writing for magazines and guidebooks.

But according to one of my sources, $800 is indeed Mukki Akira's monthly VF budget. Eeek!

Sounds comparable to the skate scene. Mind you there is that Quake player who drives a Ferrari so it may be a career one day.

The quest mode in PS2 Evo is very much what producer H Kataoka put it, " a simulation of the VF junkie lifestyle ".

You'll play as a gamer visiting arcades/game clubs in Japan and fighting over 500 virtual opponents. The quest is to beat these opponents to become the best VF player in Japan. Accordingly, not only these virtual opponents have real life data of famous japanese players, they will also be 'simulating' their playing styles and using the very same combos they use in real matches /versus/images/icons/laugh.gif !

Well, I guess for those VF junkies out there who do not have the luxuries of playing with real top players in japan, this quest thing is the closest you can get. Any closer, you'll have to buy a air ticket and fly to japan. March 13 2003, I will be challenging Kyasao and get my butt kicked in japan... virtually /versus/images/icons/grin.gif

Heh, he owes me money as well.
Must be a remainder from the VF3 days when the guy lived in a cardboard box begging and lending money from people to feed his VF3 addiction.
Good thing that now he gets payed to play the game.
