Hey all - just letting you all know I'm taking off for Japan today for the JET program. Horray for 14 hours on a plane. At least I got myself a going away present in the form of a GBA Advanced SP. I just hope I don't beat all my games before I get there.

Anyways I'm staying at some hotel in Tokyo for the orientation. Unfortunately I don't think I'll have that much time to seek out the VFDCers in Tokyo because orientation is all day, and afterwords I'll pry hang out with the JET guys. I mean, I'll have the rest of my stay to play VF...

oh, and teach English. Can't forget that. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm going to be in a town called Mikuni in Fukui-ken. It's like two hours north of Kyoto and maybe 9 hours by bus to Tokyo (3 hours on the shinkansen). So of course they're getting us all a nice bus ride from Tokyo to Fukui. Again, I repeat that I hope I don't beat all my games before then.

Take it easy all and I'll be sure to post and see what its like.

To you guys in Japan - is there anything I should know about playing VF in Japan besides the no-pounce after the match thing? Like if I just happen to wander into an arcade if there's anything I should really know (kind if like how we have the "put your quarter up" rule over here...)

Anyways that's about it. Rock on. My goal is to represent America on the next huge VF tourney broadcast over the net so you can all cheer for me when I backdash and drink and backdash and drink some more. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif Later all

Don't forget, to low punch, backdash with db+p+k+g and then dash forward uf+p+k+g and throw them. haha. That will catch them off guard. Have fun up there. 270 throw them for me with shun.

Yeah - if two people are doing a same dan-level match, it's better not to jump in unless you're at the same dan-level. Let them go at it. This isn't an unwritten rule by any stretch of the imagination, but you see it quite a bit.

to add to what GP stated... there really isn't any obvious concept of "securing" your place in line. basically, everybody just knows who's turn it is. If someone cuts in front, don't take it personally. usually just making a gesture to play (ie walking toward the machine with your card and money out) will be enough to say "I'm next". If you're not sure if you're next, just act like you're gonna play and look around and "ask" if it's ok with the others. I'd say 95% of the time, the people will gesture to you play. it's really no big deal.

American arcade machine makers should just go ahead and add a set of 10 quarter sized indindions on the face of the machine somewhere. I've played in a bunch of arcades up and down the east coast and out to Atlanta and so and it's the normally way to get in line. Even among friends we line quarters out of habit.

My old PSX had a row of quarters superglued on top of it for that arcade feel. /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

    Namflow in Japan update

Ok guys, Rich is staying at the Keio Plaza http://www.keioplaza.com/index.html ... There are a few arcades by where he is staying and he went to one, Sports World or something...

The arcade had roughly 20 VF: Evo machines, and he played about as many times, though only won two or three... Some matches he got tooled hard, while others were pretty close and he lost because of stupid mistakes on his part... He seems to be adjusting to the sticks well and even pulled off his trademark CD into 270 throw a few times... After beating one guy twice in a row that dude did the "long, hard walk around the machine" to see who the no-card player was...

Yea Rich has no idea how to get a vf.net card so he was playing without one. He also played the new F-Zero, which he describes as looking great but him sucking at, and SNK vs Capcom which he described as sucking at too but the game not being so hot.

If anyone in Tokyo is close to the Keio plaza reading this, he's more than likely going to be back at that arcade (Sports World or whatever) tonight --- he'll probably be the only white Shun player there so be sure to say hi!

    That's it for now,

    -Alex

Supergolden... I am not sure how long Rich is staying in Japan. But please ask him to keep an eye out on the new Samauri Spirits when it comes out in the fall and to give a small impression if he could. Thanks.

One of the 18 SPortlands in Shinjuku. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I do the "long walk around" all the time as well.

If you talk to him, (I assume he's w/o interenet connection at the moment) tell him to follow these complicatd instructions on buying a VF.net card.

1: Find the machine next to the VF arcade cabinets that's about 3 feet tall, and has pictures of VF.NET cards on them.
    2: Put in 5 100 yen coins
    3: Take the card

he can PM me for my number if he'll be in TOkyo for a while. I screwed my back up so VF is out for a while (can't sit for prolonged periods in a chair w/ no back on it). I'm pretty close to Shinjuku, although I hate the area.

Hey all - I'm here in Japan, the flight was awesome, everything is great.

I don't have that much time and this is my first night on the internet in forever (tonight is my night to stay in and slack, tomorrow is everyone gets drunk night.) Anyways I went to sportsland like twice, the second night I went really close to closing so I only got to play twice (and got owned both times.)

I really like the joysticks (I think that'll make all you stick guys out there happy). I still need to get used to then, but they are by far my favorite sticks to use. Just need more practice. I can do chowan fine but for some reason I have trouble with b,f+p and u+k+g. I can 270 fine, definitely got that off a few times.

I noticed people normally don't throw me after throw counterable moves, perhaps they are more used to doing the anti-DTE so they let it slide.

I think I realized why all the Japanese are so good at VF. Besides they have so much more competition and information available, all day long they play jan-ken-pon (parden my spelling), which is rock paper scissors. They use it to settle disputes all the time. So with such practice with a simple guessing game, they are probablly really good at translating it to VF.

I won like maybe twice or three times my first night there. Plus a few close matches. I think once I got used to the sticks a bit more and just had more practice against the wider variety of characters I'd be able to do kind of decently.

The one thing I'm want to really work on is the crouch dash into 270 throw. I did it once or twice against the computer, but it's mighty difficult on the stick. (I can do it pretty consistantly on the pad.) Ask the guys who went to the Top Gun tournament about the Shun CDing into 270 throws and they'll tell you all about it. I've dubbed the move "The Nammy". /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif Once I get that down pat I'll be invincible!

Thanks Gaijin Punch for the info. Normally I just play on a machine where one guy is playing the computer. Or if someone loses and gets up goes for the game after like 5-10 seconds I figure it's safe to go. I already left Tokyo unfortunately, but if your ever in Fukui let me know! Also, if I'm ever back in Tokyo (which I'm sure I will be eventually) l'll let you guys know.

How many other VFDCers are there in Japan?

Also, for anyone who cares, I played Snk Vs Capcom. I got owned at it. I don't like it. /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif I did better at CVS2, I almost beat someone.

Anyways that's about it, I got a lot of email to respond to, webpages to read, etc. Take it easy all

I think you'll find you'll rarely get thrown after a throw counterable move. [p]-throw is much more common. I do it just b/c everyone is expecting the [p]-throw. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Since I won't even go to Beat Tribe b/c it's "too far" you can bet yer ass I won't be in Fukui. Hope you brought you coat for the winter -- it's cold there, man. Also don't get kidnapped and sent to North Korea... that'd be bad!

Congrats on using the sticks -- I can't believe people actually use the pad.

Man I love pads, I grew up on them /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Playing SF2 on the SNES kinda gets you hooked, plus there were no arcades near me that had VF3/4, thus no Joysticks, and it never occured to me to buy one for home.

I love p,throw for moves that are at least P counterable, but I could see how everyone is expecting it. I'm sure I'll catch on soon enough, I just hope I don't break the bank doing it. Are there any arcades where it is less tahn 100 yen a game? I need to find one of those card machines. I bought a card for some RPG looking game called monster quest and made my character but then I couldn't play a game and it wouldn't take my coins, or at least the 100 yen wons and I was out of 500 yen ones.

Oh here's a good questoin! Suppose I have a 500 yen coin and want 100 yen coins, or visa versa, how would I ask an arcade attendent that. And is it even their job to change change? Thanks!
