Forums upgraded to UBB.threads 7.5.3

The forums have been upgraded. Along with the many enhancements and bugfixes under the hood, the list of new user features is pretty extensive as well. Take your time to familiarise yourself with them!

• Active Topics - new option added to show Unanswered Posts
• Full Reply - new buttons and options have been added including additional media videos (youtube, google, etc), image alignment options, etc.
• User List - has been overhauled with additional information, and better ways of searching for usernames.
• Page Numbering - page numbering within a thread has been updated to allow for better navigation (jump to specific page no.) Page numbers also added to PMs!
• Abbreviated Subjects - when you hover your mouse over an abbreviated subject on the forum list, a popup will display the full subject.
• Watched Forums - new option added to only notify when a new thread is created in a watched forum, instead of every new post.
• Stylesheet Footer Selector - in the footer is a drop-down menu to quickly change the stylesheet, should you need to.
• Search Option - new option added to just search the body of the post and exclude the subject.
• Emailing Posts - When emailing a post, you now have the option of emailing just that post, the post and all its replies, or the entire thread.
• Emailing PMs - you can now email PMs to yourself.
• My Buddies - buddies are back, with more functionality (e.g. PM a selection or all)
• Gallery Links - when viewing an image in the gallery, you'll receive the UBBcode for the thumbnail, medium and full resolution of the image, as well as the original dimension and file size info.
• User Profile Pages - Overhauled! Information rearranged, UBB buddies box added, visitor comments added. (This is a small step toward making user profile pages into a personal blog space)

Important Markup Changes
Please take note of the following changes to existing UBBcode markup.

• Command Markup - UBBcodes for command markup have been changed to the numeric format:

  results in:
• Youtube Markup - UBBcodes for embedding Youtube have been changed to a more generic format:

  or

  this allows for other video sites to be used. Currently supported sites are Google, MySpace, Yahoo and Youtube.

 

New Video Markup!
Please take note of the following changes to existing UBBcode markup.

• Zoome Markup - UBBcodes for embedding Zoome videos have been added. Just copy/paste the URL in the zoome tags:

Gamertags!
In other news, both XBL and PSN gamertags get shown along with your post info. You can edit these fields in your profile (My Stuff > Edit Profile)

 

I wish it was! But the PSN Gamertag addition was the result of a number of user requests.

 

It is technically possible, but I won't increase the limit in the interests of quality.

 

Myke, does the updated UBB.thread support Japanese characters? I think I had to use HTML for characters to be displayed correctly.

 

You know, I thought the previous version did (right?) so I assumed this would as well by default. But when I recently tried to copy/paste some Japanese text in a post, it previewed OK but turned out all garbled when submitted.

I'll need to look into it when I get a chance.

 

The japanese text input issue had previously been raised with the developer, and this was the response given:

The collation and charset need to be changed on the tables, the problem being you can just do a straight convert due to the fulltext indexing, potential data loss, etc.

So it looks like we'll just have to put up with it for now. Version 8 is going to be a major upgrade and I have no idea when that is planned for release, though it wouldn't surprise me if it's not out until next year.
