(This translation contains all of the details from the official Japanese version (http://www.virtuafighter.jp/characters.shtml) and is as full and accurate as I can make it. Things I added personally to flesh things out are in blue.)

Facing off in the final match of the 4th World Fighting Tournament, the 2 remaining competitors were locked in a desperate struggle. The match had reached the final round, and 10 seconds had elapsed. Kage-Maru struck out with his elbow before nimbly shifting into his Jumonji stance, the cloth band attached to his hood fluttering. With a sharp-eyed gaze he focused on his opponent, Shun Di. Many fighters had fallen prey to Shun’s deceptive fighting style, and Kage-Maru had to remind himself not to underestimate him.

“Brace yourself!” he muttered, before dashing toward Shun to launch his attack. Before he had a chance to connect, Shun was violently sent flying to the side of the ring. In his place, the imposing form of Dural now stood before Kage-Maru, her silver skin glinting under the floodlights. The arena erupted in confusion, with spectators fleeing in terror. Kage-Maru’s eyes widened in surprise momentarily, before narrowing again as he exhaled slowly. “Mother…” he murmured, confronting the terrifying visage that was once his mother, Tsuki-Kage. As people drained from the arena, Shun finally got to his feet and stood beside Kage-Maru.

“Looks like somethin’ serious-” Shun started to say before Kage-Maru abruptly cut him off. “Forgive me, but I have no need of any help. Do not raise your hand to her,” he implored. “I must deal with this alone.” Respecting his wishes, Shun withdrew.

Dural lunged to attack Kage-Maru. Defending himself desperately against Dural’s ferocious onslaught, Kage-Maru instinctively knew there was no way to save Tsuki-Kage, and he had prepared both his body and mind for this very moment. He leaped out of Dural’s range to catch his breath, then summoning all his strength, he suddenly charged directly at Dural…

Minutes later, Kage-Maru’s final battle had come to an end. His costume ripped and tattered, and his name now tarnished, he staggered toward the now motionless body of Dural. Kneeling beside her to offer his prayers, a solemn tear fell from his eye and splashed onto Dural’s metallic frame. Kage-Maru cradled Dural in his arms, and looking into her now expressionless face, tried to recall memories of how his mother used to be, of how she would want to be remembered. Drawing closer, a startled look suddenly crossed Kage-maru’s face. “This… this is…” he stammered in disbelief…

Dural's demise at the hands of Kage-Maru had proven to be both a blessing and a curse for J6, the tournament’s organizers. Dural had run riot during the final match and brought the tournament's image into disrepute. J6, going into damage control, struggled to bring the furor under control. On one hand, analysis of Dural’s recovered combat test data showed some promising results. On the other, Kage-Maru’s single-handed destruction of the unit exposed some major design flaws that affected its resilience in combat situations.

In response, there were urgent calls from within J6 to both strengthen the production models immediately and also secure a new test subject for the Dural Project. J6 had already decided to target Sarah Bryant once again, but under pressure the organization had to resort to a contingency plan instead, one that had once been shelved indefinitely. That plan involved a previous target of theirs, Vanessa Lewis. A product of a J6 training facility in her youth years ago, her advanced combat abilities continued to attract the attention of J6 executives long after she managed to escape their compound.

Learning that Vanessa had been assigned to protect Sarah, J6 allowed her to infiltrate the 4th World Fighting Tournament and then successfully abducted her. Brainwashing her and finding a way to reawaken her latent combat potential, they were able to elevate her skills to their highest level. The next stage of their scheme was to physically integrate Vanessa into Dural, as they had done with Tsuki-Kage. However, the day before the planned operation was to take place, Vanessa disappeared. Knowing there was no way she could have escaped on her own, J6 immediately suspected that she had inside help, and suspicion swirled throughout the organization. The plan to fully incorporate Vanessa into Dural had come to a standstill.

However, J6’s research laboratories had been able to extract Vanessa’s combat data before she disappeared. Rushing to meet deadlines, they successfully transferred that data into a production model Dural. In initial tests, this new variant proved far superior to the original production model in every aspect of hand-to-hand combat. V-Dural, as the new variant was called, had been born. J6 immediately began preparations for holding the 5th World Fighting Tournament. They planned to use the tournament as a platform to not only test V-Dural’s performance against the best fighters in the world but also to flush out those responsible for Vanessa’s escape.

The stage for the 5th World Fighting Tournament had been set. A tournament that means as much to the martial artists participating as it does to J6’s shadowy ambitions…
