Game mode for HD tv's

    Hi,

I'm new to this forum and VF5:FS. Maybe this is common knowledge, but if your tv supports it, you should put it on game mode. This will lower the frame delay from your screen. I use a Samsung 40A550 myself, and the results are noticable. For example, putting on game mode allowed me to block more lows on reaction compared to game mode off.

    Fight on! [IMG]

This is not always correct. Best way to reduce video lag is to turn off ALL filters and use a direct connection from console to tv

Sometimes Component is better than hdmi... all tv's are different and not one of them is perfect.

I think it's necessary to turn GAME MODE on when you use Samsung TV. Yeah, the result is noticeable.

I thought this was common knowledge. Its even better with optical sound to a reveiver. The easiest way to tell if there is lag, is to try just frame moves that you know. If they dont work its usually cause of the lag.

I measured my input delay on my 40 inch 1080p Samsung screen and came to a rather sad conclusion:

With game mode: 80 ms delay ( 5 frames! )
Without game mode: 100 ms delay ( 6 frames! )

Every current HDTV has lag it just depends on what feels good to you.

However, you should test it with different cables (HDMI and Composite), but always make sure the cables go directly into the TV and not a secondary source like a Audio Receiver.

Another thing to do is turn off all filter options that the TV may have... including in some cases Game Mode.

Finally try different resolutions. Running a console at 720p may improve results.

There are a vanishing few HDTVs with low lag. Cheap PC monitors are good because they simply display the signal with no post-processing, and the cheap panel tech (TN panels) itself mitigates input lag to some degree. Cheap PC monitors also sometimes suffer from ghosting, poor colors and bad viewing angles, but those things are somewhat less important for gaming than it is for movies. I use the VH242H from Asus that I got for my PC a while back, seems fine to me. People over at SRK swear by the VH236, but there are quite a few models with low lag. The image quality thing is a tradeoff to be aware of if you're used to the high-quality panels on your TV, however.

As a general rule TVs have a significant amount of input lag, and significantly better image quality. Plasma has fewer problems with lag in some cases, but it is also becoming less and less popular.

I've found a good way to test lag in VF ^_^

In Dojo, set your opponent to a character with a +4 on Normal Hit(NH) PK (or really just use a mid/high attack that's +4 on NH).

Record the AI doing the +4 attack --> Throw --> G right away.
Record another action with the AI doing the +4 attack --> elbow.

Against the recording, get hit by the +4 attack (so your character is at -4), then do CD-Fuzzy guard (335G). If you see a throw animation, immediately do PK or a 16 frame (I think up to 16 frame execution is guaranteed here) or less attack. I recommend PK if you have not drilled yourself on this before (guaranteed attack when Crouch Dashing a throw). This is not easy and you will usually have to skip the 5G part of the fuzzy to punish the throw whiff.

This is one of VF's situations where lag can actually affect this, and as you do this across multiple monitors, you will get a sense of the lag because you will have to beat the throw on reaction much sooner on laggier TVs than on minimized lag TVs.

P.S. Practicing this drill, and adding in a third recording of a slower unsafe string after the -4 attack is something I recommend to people. The elbow recording makes sure you block and then immediately do a followup attack like an elbow. The throw recording pushes your reaction to punish the throw whiff which has a very tiny window for guaranteed punishment here. The slower string attack (like Lion's 66KK or even KK) is good to keep you honest and holding G instead of mindlessly doing an elbow into a string.

This drill is one of those things you can be doing 10 minutes a day and probably see gains after a few months. And the gains are actually huge.

Switching HDMI slots on my tv fixed it, I now have 0 lag on game mode! [IMG]

That is just weird. How does that make any sense? [IMG]

If you search the net on tv lag, you'll see the suggestion come up a lot (ie: "make sure you try all the different HDMI slots on your tv, as they might behave differently!")
Turns out, for my tv, that's correct: it has 3 HDMI slots, and only HDMI-3 is lag-free! [IMG]
