Obviously Street Fighter was named the number #1 franchise. But I have to admit I was surprised that Virtua Fighter series was listed at #2.

This pissed of a great many of people, especially the Tekken players. Tekken was ranked #8. Check out some of the posts for a good laugh.

ughh, there's people saying Killer Instinct, DoA, Tekken and Super Smash Bros should all be higher than VF /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Pretty good list though, imo. VF is usually lower down on these kind of lists, so it being high up was a welcome change.

    game journalists <3 vf.

it's a legitimately great series so they like that, but they also don't mind that people don't send them hate mail in droves any time they write a review of it.

edit: also, game journalists are known for being amazingly good trolls. at least this time though they were trolling for the greater good.

I think the list was pretty fair overall except some inconsistencies. Tekken below Soul Calibur? KOF below Soul Calibur? Garou being grouped up with KOF? Where is Capcom vs SNK series? (they mentioned Capcom's Versus but talked only about the Marvel ones) Samurai Shodown above Guilty Gear (they should swap positions imo)?

Anyways, VF got a well-deserved spot high up there. Couldn't ask for anything much better

I think they might have had fighting games that actually offered something new to the genre higher up. That's why Tekken is so low /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Glad to see VF getting some recognition, but game journalists are predictable. I knew that SF and VF would top the list before I even clicked the link. Not really indicative of...well...anything.

As someone who likes both VF AND Tekken, I find it hard to gloat in VF's favor over a list on a random website. In the end, Tekken is still the more successful franchise, and VF still needs to find a way to attract those people complaining in the comments section. I need more people to play, dammit.

I'm very glad DoA did not make that list. I really liked their commentary on why they chose the placements they did. It seemed like they were going under which games added the most to the genre.

Not a bad list, franchise wise in terms of innovation and blah blah i can see why Tekken didn't score so high. But reading the complaints really is a highlight for the week.

Dissapointed that CVS2 wasn't mentioned in the Capcom Vs listing, i still think it has just as much fun as MVC series.

While i'd like to get the general public to understand why VF is such a great game, i'm still glad I don't have to deal with 1 million hypercharged kiddies believing their character is better than someone elses and then chucking a tantrum when they lose, or be a severe sore winner.

I wanna get into Blue blaze and GG though, always been a franchise i haven't had much time to invest in.

    Nice post! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

I'm refusing to read the comments due to the fact that I don't want to be horrified.

The list was better than most out there though. Kudos to them on that.

I knew the Street Fighter series will be number one at the countdown since it help a lot for the fighting game genre. If Street Fighter series never existed, all fighting games will never be here.[/size]

There were fighting games before Street Fighter. The most famous one being Karate Champ.

It was Street Fighter 2 that made the genre popular.

They were as "great" in terms of competitiveness as SF1. That means, competition didn't exist in those games. (unless you count competing for hi-score lol) So yeah, without SF2 fighting games as we know might have never existed :p

I can only imagine the hilarity; this top ten has already started a heated discussion in the greek beat em up forums i frequent. AFAIC, even thought i love Samurai Shodown i totally freaked out when i saw it take #3 because i already knew street fighter was going to be #1 and i honestly couldn't imagine them giving #2 to a game without broad appeal like VF when there's popular party fighters like Smash Bros, Powerstone, Naruto or Dragonball! I was about to start brooding but then i was pleasantly suprised - gametrailers made my day this time /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

VF is rarely in these kind of lists and if it is then it's placed way lower. So that's some super prediction skills you got there.

    Angry Tekken scored lower much?

What? I always see VF on these lists. First 2D and first 3D on top is the norm since it's based on innovation, not popularity.

And I like both, so accusing me of being a fangirl doesn't really work. It was just on my mind because I had company over two nights ago and everyone refused to play VF despite my prodding.

VF is usually placed pretty high in those kinds of list actually. It always makes best game of all time in the list of 50 and besides I cant remember the last VF game that didn't get a rating under 9.0. The game was always loved by critics but IMO its not a mainstream fighting game its for the hardcore fans of fighting games
