Getting used to the stick.

Hi folks. I have a strange question for you. I've been very busy with college/uni work and have not managed to play VF5 for extended periods of time for a few months now. Whenever I have got on I play Akira for 10-15 minutes with a pad and then had to switch off.

Now that my course has finished, I want to put more time into playing with my EX2 stick but am finding it really difficult to adjust. I usually play as Akira but do you guys recommend anyone else just to get me used to the stick?

Thank you for your time and apologies if this is not in the right section.

Funny I was just talking to my roommate about the same situation...

I would say if you have little or no stick experience use someone with less time sensitive and less directional inputs. I play Jacky so I would recommend him, there is really no moves that require tough inputs at all. I would also say Lei Fei. To be honest Aoi, Goh, and especially Akira are not the ones to start off on with a stick.

About two months ago I began training with Akira and found it to be a very tough learning process even when I felt confident with the stick. However learning his moves has improved my game with Jacky tremendously. Akira forces you to get perfect timing and master the directional inputs, which in my opinion is the toughest part of learning the stick. Throw in the fact that you may have used hotkey like buttons on the controller, rather then simply PKG, and Akira can be a serious pain in the ass!

I can do most of Akiras moves on a pad. This is coming from someone
who used a stick for literally his entire gaming career until VF5.
You know what i can't do on a pad? 270's consistently, go fig.
Well that and except for MY gamepad, on anyone elses gamepad I
can't dash forward consistently lol. I don't get it, and my friends
don't get it. BRING YOUR FUCKING PAD! Oops I forgot. Maybe it's
    because my gamepad is green....

    Go fig.

I'd suggest Jeffrey or Jacky. They both have /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif moves to get you used to those and the combos are simple enough. I also recomend just storing your controler somewhere until you get used to the stick. The lure of the devil you know can get preatty strong when you start losing a lot /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I am Auvii's roommate and I have a similar problem to the OP. Right now I am using Van, and she is pretty easy to use controller wise. But I have a hard time with using the stick. I feel like a lot of the moves I do very easily are much harder to pull off. I play a mix up game with her, distance when in defensive stance and close up with offensive. Its a lot harder dashing in both directions with the stick then it is with the pad, and I dont know if its just me but I swear the timing for DM is different. Or maybe my thumb reacts faster then my hand???

Auvii suggested I play as another character to get used to the stick, he has also threatened to hide my controller. He once tried to lick it so I wouldnt touch it thus not use it. He is a sick bastard that Auvii guy.

Okay, out of the characters mentioned I'd prefer to use Lei and/or Jeffry. I just can't seem to click with Jacky (personal thing I guess).

What about Lau or Pai? Would they be any good for getting better with a stick?

    Thanks again guys. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

What is the toughest part about using the stick?

You can look at the characters move list and probably make the call on whether or not it will be a tough ride based on your issues with the stick. If its directional problems look for tons of half circles and out of the norm mix ups to avoid. Also input sensitive move sets like many of Akira's would be tough and smart to avoid.

Like Cuz mentioned practicing the 66 and 33 moves can help a ton. ( and get rid of the devil !) I think its important to remember that everyone will have a different reason for why they had or didn't have issues with a stick. Find your strengths and weaknesses, look at a characters move set, play them in Dojo, see how it feels.

There can also be the possibility that "You're" better off with
a pad. Despite what people say, you don't have to use a stick.
