Hey I just got GGX2, and I have to say its great. I'm not really a fan of 2-d fighting games, but the charecters and animation are so awesome i couldn't resist getting it. The fights move so fast yet last quite long, so it feels very different from VF's pacing. Anyone else here played it yet, and if so are the missions even humanly possible? /versus/images/icons/smile.gif

Nope, thats why I trained some monkeys to do it for me.
Now if only they would stop biting me.

Heh...I sold my souls to it, now that everyone in Chicago plays the game.
Plus it's a great game to play on your own. There is only so much of VF "practice" I can do myself.

I'm actually really interested in getting that game. But what I wanna know is, how deep is the game play and fighting engine?

Is it one of those flashy DOA-type mashers, or does it really take time and practice to master the characters?

Is it possible to play effectively on the DS2 or will I for sure need a joystick?

How many buttons (excl. the stick/dpad) do you use in the game?

What's the learning curve like, compared to the VF series?

I play this game abit but we call it "Half Bar" instead of "GGXX". Its my third favorite 2-D fighting game.

I made the mistake of investing in DMC2, don't get me started, and I'm going to take it back today. This game might be in my ps2 by the end of the day.

So are there set moves to learn or does everyone fight the same but look different.?

The Learning curve on GGXX isn't anywhere near as high as VF, each charecter only has about a dozen or so normal moves, plus maybe 7 special moves and a few super moves, and one ultra-cheap insta-kill. You can get the basics of a charecter down in an hour and start kicking ass with them. There is still a ton of depth though, with Roman Cancels being especialy cool, they let you cancel any recovery frames you have after a move, so you can do a combo, end it with a big move, roman cancel it, and continue on in the combo. Don't worry, these take half your super-bar to do, and it will take much practice befor you can use them confidently in a match.
What I like most about this game is the great diversity of play styles between charecters. Some charecters like Ky and Sol are very Street-Fighterish and are played by just straight up attack and defense, but others like Eddie, Zappa, Testament, and bridget can summon monsters and lay traps to fight along with them, making your opponent have to deal with multiple attacks at the same time. Other charecters like Johnny and Venom revolve around using set-ups to dominate the opponent. As Johnny hits you with his projectile, a coin, his sword slashes become more and more powerful, and if gets you in a mist trap, they become unblockable. If you let venom set up one of his ball traps, you'll have to deal with 4 rushing projectiles while he charges in with an attack.
The game uses 5 buttons, and theres no simutanious button presses so you can play it on a pad easily, but from my experience after 30 minutes or so your hand will hurt like a bitch from all the half circles and extremely fast pace of the game. Story mode is also very fun in this game, each charecter has 3 different story branches and the dialog between fights plays out just like an anime, although its only still-shots.
I'd highly recomend this game, its great to play against people and the animations and style of it are just too damn cool.

i'll definitely get it at the end of this quarter - if I get it now, I know for sure I won't be studying at all!

    Any sites for GGX2?

I'm sorry for reviving an old post (if thats what I'm doing) but I need to know if there are any site for GGX2 like VFDC where one could go to better understand the game. I Just bought it used and it didn't come with a booklet so I'm !@#$ed up in the game. Anyways thanks for any responses ahead of time.

    Yay, hooray for GGXX! /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Imho, GGXX just appeals to the many of us that grew up on SF. The gameplay is different from SF, but it has similar enough feel to SF to make us all warm and fuzzy inside. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif And it has enough technical merits that'd interest a VF player (and vice verca). And the game is strangely balanced - that is all of the characters have some supplus cheezey elements- to the point where the cheeze galore kidna balances out in a mysterious way. /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Not as balanced as VF4E, but it's not bad. Oh, and the mission mode- just forget about it. They really are pointless. But any game where the a character yells out "Ride the Lighting!" must be a good game. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I use Potemkin, btw- the best mix of Zangief, Birdie and Alex, imho.

I haven't played in months but I think GGXX is great. Great design and game engine. I had the most fun with the missions. Its such a thrill to final complete one after playing it over and over for a couple of hours.

GGXX is probably my favorite 2D fighter. It retains the hyper-fast pace of 2D fighters while also having a good amount of depth to it.

I personally don't really care too much for the single player. I rarely play it by myself, although I'll occassionally take a few cracks at Survival, since that's where you unlock the extra characters. Mainly, though, I only play a lot against a few of my friends who are into it.

me and other Sean (aka Shaun aka Unconk) would prolly be the best VF players who are also good at GGXX which makes him my collecting rival. U here that unconk, I have 235, where u at? I play Baiken FO SERIOUS, and am working to get better for the Maryland tourney thrown by Tomass (aka asshat). He thinks he's better than my serious nugga KBNova and I'm about to show him what us Ohio cats can do /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif
