I saw it last night. I thought it was great.

Anyone into old school fighting games should love it.

Looking into picking up the six volume comic book set to get the full story.

Do that. it's an awesome little series. The sixth book ends in a rush but I think that was due to O'Malley trying to ensure his ending was canon and in before the movie hit.

I saw the movie as well, I enjoyed it a lot but some things didnt quite make sense. for example, the people in the movie are in their 20's. maybe 23? but all the references are for games made in the early nineties, like SF2 and FF2 and even Zelda. It seems to me that the movie was written by a 30 something, but acted by 20 somethings. there is a generation gap of about 10 years in the movie between the games of the writer childhood and the games of the actors childhood. thats what put me off a little. I was thinking "fuck this I was playing SF2 before these guys were even born!"

Does it make sense? the movie was about the 8 bit generation but those actors dont belong to the 8 bit, maybe at a stretch the 16 bit, but most likely they grew up with a playstation 1.

Why is it important though? My younger brother who is 16 has played plenty of my old NES/SNES games. He completely gets this movie.

Would you describe your 16 years old brother as belonging to the 8 bit generation?

I know you can play these games at any point in time, but they only defined a generation when they were most popular IMO. for example, I can play pong anytime, but im not a pong or pacman guy. Im 36, I remember first playing SF2 when I was already 15(maybe?), so even SF2 is not really part of my childhood.

But you right, the movie was great, I really enjoyed it a lot.

Medieval movies have actors that don't belong to medieval times.

I understand it seeming weird but I think it was more for the style and not trying to portray a certain generation (Without having seen it yet).

Medieval movies are not self refential like scott pilgrim is. I think in 20 years time scott piglrim will be a classic, because by then people wont really make a difference between who grew up in the 80's and who grew up in the 90's.

As a 20-something I gotta say I did grow up with a SNES in the house w/ no older siblings. It was my thing.

EmX, so in the year 2000 you were, say 15 years old, and while everybody else was playing FF9-10 you were playing FF1-2 and those were the games that defined your teen-age years?

I see the videogame phenomenon in Japan as a social one, with dragon quest for example being the game al the kids play and enjoy together. DQ is not that great in itself, its more the experience of playing and discussing with friends that make it a cult IMO.

But this is all speculation. In a way, I feel a bit bitter because I sold my PS1 to buy a flaming new neo-geo pocket in 19999(black and white, KOF-R1 only) and played with that only for a couple of years lol.

Nah man, I was about 5-6 when I got the SNES, and it was Super Mario World and Super Metroid that 'defined my childhood' By the time I hit 15 I had a PS2 already. Err...I probably missed your point.

i don't think this movie is being sold to the 8-bit generation cause the 8 bit generation went on to become the 16-bit generation also. I think the Person who wrote the book was just a Gamer who wanted to make a story using games he played in his lifetime as a plot devices. I think the movies looks cool though and i will check it out eventually.

I'm in the same boat as those who after watching the film are eager to pick up the comics, I loved the movie. I first saw the trailer when I went to see "Kick Ass" and it immediately clicked for me. I'd been anticipating it all summer.

I wasn't disappointed and can't recommend the film enough (I can't believe it's having trouble at the box-office), I'm going to go see it again - I didn't even do that for the Dark Knight; I'll definitely pick up the DVD when it's released.

I remember first seeing the trailer when I was down in So Cal. Me and Plague went to see Prince of Persia and I saw the promo for the first time. At first I thought it looked like a sketchy teen movie. But it actually grew on me.

Still have yet to see it, but I had a great time playing the demo version of the arcade game on the XBLA. Makes me want to see the movie.
