The most obvious reason today to not get a 4K TV is that there is just not enough content out there supporting it to justify the purchase of one. (Which is safe to say I disagree with point #8.) But the guy who wrote that CNET article mentions several other good reasons. Well done.

Is 4K / 8k / Xk useful? It's not rocket science. Stand close to your TV until you can see the pixels, then slowly back away until you can't see them anymore. That's the distance resolution makes a difference. There are a lot more factors that affects a persons TV experience, resolution is just one of them.
On my 1080 55in set, I can see the pixels up to about 3.5ft, and I sit 8ft normally.
So less you sit like 2ft away from your TV, 4K doesn't matter. That's assuming you are staring at a particular area of the screen and not actually "watching tv". Color, contrast, brightness, now those are things you can see across the room, but dumbtards don't know shit about that.

4K will be worth it when it's supported in Street Fighter V...until then, not worth it.

Let me start off by saying that I pretty much agree with every point raised in the article. Especially the point about TV manufacturer's marketing strategy (bigger number = better quality).

But anyone who bothered to read the article will also realise that:
    • It was first written 3 years ago. Technology has advanced since then, especially in areas that really matter, so the subsequent edits to the article report on these advancements, and eventually conclude with...
    • a new article: 4K TVs are no longer stupid, and here's why
To be clear, the change in the author's opinion (i.e. "no longer stupid") is less to do with the 4K resolution and more to do with other technological advancements that really effect picture quality. It just so happens these advancements are getting bundled in with 4K TVs because 1080p is on the decline.

Which all ultimately leads to any TV consumer asking: "Okay, what stuff can I get to watch on this 4K TV now to justify my lofty investment in it?" To this day the amount of content created exclusively for 4K TV sets still isn't substantial enough to matter despite the recognition of other technological advancements made over recent years. And what is the benefit of paying extra for a 4K TV set if the majority of existing/scarce 4K content doesn't really showcase the dramatic improvement in picture quality over what is displayed on a typical top-of-the-line yet still relatively cheaper 1080p set? The latter option is still the better bargain by far, and will continue to be the better option for the next couple of years or so.

When Internet speeds everywhere are good enough to facilitate 4K pornography streaming it'll take off. I'm serious.

This, and when Sony/Pioneer/whoeever rolls out the next gen movie format. And I still haven't changed my DVD collection to BDs, didn't really notice that much of a differance unless you really like a lot of artificial sharpening and artefacts on old movies.

yeah nice try beeing smart...my excellence has fun with the obvious (99% according to Pam) fact that you knew nothing about the relation of distance and the size of an object when you want to observe details before you read a 3 years old article. One can recognise that just by observing the environment. Only a dumbtard wouldnt get that. Its intelligence not knowledge so even a papuan can understand that. At the least you understand some things you read...btw nice blog but i can reach more people when i scream out of the window. Chief(likes this)Vunilli your humor lacks substance so here something really funny: 1fk and nwo was raped by maki

And now after everybody thinks that guy is only negative and shits into this thread something rather useful here: The thing they advertise as HDR is very important for the high end experience. The current generation of 4k screens mostly lack candela. I recommend to wait until mid 2017. By then many TVs with enough candela should be availlable on the mass market for decent prices

@ShinjukuATM, let me tell you what your problem is: "beeing"... that when most people stop taking you seriously. A monkey might be smart enough to solve fusion, but it can't communicate. At the end of the day it's still dumb chump. That's you.

Please shut the fuck up, HDR.. do you even know what HDR stands for? better google that shit. lack candela? Why don't just say they aren't bright enough.. which is complete bullshit. Resolution has (very little) to do with brightness, and if you are referring to back lighting technology such as LED, which 99.9% of the 4K tvs are made off, brightness isn't the problem, it's in fact darkness. You are so stupid.

Yes @MakiLeSushi raped 1fk and nwo, with this mashy Vanessa over Atalanta lag... congrats.. wait. what does that have to do with you and this thread again? oh.. nothing.. you are still an dumb fucking illiterate idiot.

whoa a misspelling error..legit arguement...i just mash the e button from time to time.stupid me...and sorry that i cant compete with your amazing lettered native tongue...im totally aware of the fact that you need less max candela when darkness level has very low candela

are you aware that you are monkey too? No?...quit religion

They released 4k because they need to stay competitive against LED TVs. People look for specs, even if there is no content for it. I know it doesn’t make sense… Hopefully in 2-3 years 4k content is more available, because it will then be worth it.

As for HDR you can test it with HDR picture and read how is can be bright&deep cd/m2 , HDR is about brighter whites and deeper blacks, as for contents they released in late 2015 ,
    i found this :

Hollywood studios have started preparing several titles for release in 4K HDR, and the new Ultra HD Blu-ray format will obviously support it.

How to get watch HDR content:

    1.Ultra HD Blu-ray players - starting late 2015

2.Netflix - will start streaming in 4K HDR later this year with a bit rate of 18 Mb/s (HEVC), possibly in more than one HDR format

3.Amazon Instant Video – will start streaming in 4K HDR later this year

4.M-Go – will offer movies in 4K HDR as a download to a secure hard drive soon, Samsung-exclusive right now

5.Vudu – will offer HDR movies in Dolby Vision later this year

6.Dolby Cinema – a new kind of cinema with Dolby Vision (HDR + more) and Dolby Atmos sound. Tomorrowland was the first title to debut on May 22.

All good points. A 4K TV might very well be worth getting by 2018 for movie and TV show buffs and sports fans. But still, those who look to mainly play video games on one will likely not see any significant visual improvements over what he/she sees while playing on a high-end 1080p TV set (unless that person prefers to sit very close to the TV set which can really mess with eyes).

Yh at 2018 all tvs will be 4K and the high-end tvs will be OLED Too ( like meanwhile ) , you can get 4K OLED tv now but i don't recommend getting OLED tv now due alot of issues that need to fix right now ( some issues can't fixed by firmwares :p ) the OLED panels need more improving so if u want to get just LED 4K it's ok ( you need to know that all tvs now are just marketing ). Because there are no much 4K content all your stuff will be upscaled , in this situation you must choose a good tv who can handle the 1080p well, Indeed 1080p on a 4k won’t look blurrier (except on some TVs which are really bad at upscaling).

As for Gaming i saw people who got 4K tvs for their 4K resolution games ( i don't know what PS4K who all talk about it now if it does support 4k gaming :p) in the end i recommend to wait for 2017-2018 4K OLED tvs indeed they will be Fixed from all issues extra more new stuff for it , 4K content will be there also ( i saw Korean channel who depth 4K so its start from korea hope next popular channels to make it worth it :D

Here's another reason why Euros are idiots: Quoting people with the intent of misleading. I hope you are real proud raving over a game no one gives a shit about.

@RawrCookie, please refrain from saying shit you are clueless about.. OLED TVs has issues? Let me ask you this, do you own an OLED? Have you sat on it? Or you just read some shit on the magazine? Ya Ok.. KO. Recommending 4k LED over OLED is fucking dumb as the advice you get on VFDC on VF. Go ahead list some of the issues of OLED.. Oh wait guess what how about if you get a real job, buy an OLED and you understand what infinite contrast's like. Dumb shit!

4k content? where? Where's star wars force awakens 4k at?

4K gaming? LLLLLLLLOOOOOOOLLLLLLL! I'm sorry son, and I'm sorry to the PS4fanboys, PS4.5 aint doing no 4K ok? Wait for another 5 years before you game in 4K on console peasants.

Finally, you guys are still too dumb to understand this simple fact: a normal person cannot see the difference between 1080 and 2160 in a normal livingroom condition on a television set.

    Fuck!! you people are sheeps!

I understand you people are too poor to afford OLED but here's a taste of the real deal:
