So there's been some work by Sebo & discussion in various character subforums about listing guaranteed counterattacks for moves.

It seems like this kind of stuff ought to go in a more permanent / easily accessible place, like the wiki, so I wanted to see what format people thought would be useful. so far what's been suggested . .

    1. just use the filters on the command lists. It's already there, and works, but doesnt have all the characters in one place, and doesn't take range into account. Modifying it requires work on myke's part.

    2. one big list in the system section of the wiki, like http://virtuafighter.com/view.php?section=vf4&file=vf4evo_counter_tables.php
This would get all the characters into one place, and would be relatively fast to do, but might not be as flexible with regard to range / quirks (e.g. punishable by jeffs elbow, but only in closed stance). Could be modified by anyone with a wiki login.

    3. individual character lists, like sebo's been doing, but formatted nicely & put in the character sub-sections of the wiki. Would be more flexible, but more work, and involve a lot of duplicated information. Could be modified by anyone with a wiki login.

Obviously, it'll end up getting done however whoever ends up doing it wants to do it, but if you've got thoughts, throw 'em in.

What would REALLY help is recording in training mode, but that's not on you guys lol. Otherwise I've been doing ok with the movelist filters.

-9 for DS Vane's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif (granted the attack doesn't push back like Goh's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif [this will take more than one player to find all the ones that work though]).

    -----

Added some crouch recovery moves, a few Eileen specifics, and changed up Vanessa's section (noting Stance and removing redundancies).

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif seemed pretty situational to me (a lot of sebo's punishment notes for it say "testing needed"), which is why i didn't include it in the frame dump... if someone wants to add it, or copy over from sebo's vane punishment chart, go for it.

    This would be my preference.

I'm not a fan of character based "punishment charts" for a number of reasons. It's the giving a man a fish (and a year's supply at that) rather than teaching him how to fish approach. And I think to a beginner the amount of information appears to be overwhelming.

One could argue that these charts provide a convenience, saving you from looking up in the actual command lists, but I don't think this convenience outweighs the additional information the command lists give you as well.

For example, knowing that a move is -14 on Guard is one thing, but what if you're interested in its Hit and CH properties? Is it High, Mid or Low (important if you actually want to guard!)? If you're viewing the command list, then all that info is right there.

I'm more in favour of section for guaranteed attacks within each character's strategy wiki page. Knowing what your own, and best, guaranteed attacks are at different advantages is where it all starts from, and isn't immediately obvious from the command list.

Learning, and then remembering, disadvantages is an ongoing process. I understand that guaranteed attacks aren't purely determined by frames alone. There may be some amount of push-back after the guard, the opponent may recover crouching or standing. Again, I think this information is better captured in the character strategy wiki as I think the cases are few and far between.

Finally, I'd like to reduce any duplication where possible.

I'm a little confused as to where you think the information should be captured; you're saying character strategy wiki, but do you mean that info on which attacks of (e.g. jeffs) are punishable should be in his wiki only? Problem with that is the strategy wikis aren't standardized.

Seems like if you want people to use the command lists, and you want to reduce duplication, the thing to do is to start modifying the command lists to take note of low attacks that recover standing and high or mid attacks that recover crouching, as well as attacks that push-back out of e.g. jab range.

In most other fighters that are played regularly in tournies, fishing comes with having the proper options in training/dojo mode to test these sort of things.

I didn't spell it out because I'm not yet convinced on the best way to present this information. The Black Book Strategy pages also had a Vs. "Character" page as well, so maybe that's an approach we could take?

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Seems like if you want people to use the command lists, and you want to reduce duplication, the thing to do is to start modifying the command lists to take note of low attacks that recover standing and high or mid attacks that recover crouching, as well as attacks that push-back out of e.g. jab range.</div></div>
Non-standard recovery positions are already noted for the most part (I just checked Akira's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif recovers crouching) but if there are omissions or corrections to be made, then send them through (open invitation to anyone!).

Push-back isn't noted, but if someone was willing to test every move to determine if the push back prevented a guaranteed counter attack, then I'll happily add it to the command lists.

Note that I merely stated a preference -- you can still go ahead with the charts if most people think they're useful. I just personally find the same info, and more, in the command lists.

Ok, sounds good - i'll keep the chart in the playground for now, and copy useful information to the command lists if / when people add it to the chart.
