Guard cancelling into a move after evade...

I used the search engine with no luck, so apologies if this has been dealt with before.

Most advanced players advise guard cancelling after a successful evade into a move or crouch dash, instead of using the "default" evade attack.

I just have a question about timing, since I'd imagine the timing is pretty strict.
Input [G] too early = not a proper evade
Input [G] too late = no point in guard cancelling at all.

In essence, what's the correct way to do this manouver, and is it considered an advancd technique?

Again, apologies if this has been discussed before...

Input G as soon as you see your character moving to evade; dodges can't be cancelled by G once they are started, so you'll get a evade -> G-cancel every time.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up.

But since the [G] doesn't interrupt the evade, what is the point of guard cancelling then?
Why not simply evade>perform move / combo?
Obviously I'm missing something here... /versus/images/graemlins/blush.gif

    (Edit)

(This space is where I posted some rubbish about being able to [G]-cancel a failed evade, corrected below. Edited for clarity and in the interest of avoiding misinformation.)

Cas, you cannot G-cancel a failed/slow evade at all. So there's no Option Select here whatsoever.

The only use pressing [G] will have during a dodge is if you intend on using a neutral+[P]+[K]+[G] move but do not want an evade attack. All the G-cancel does is clear the input buffer and not cancel anything.

So, with Akira, if you want to SPoD after a successful evade, just quickly tap [G] before you start the inputs. If you want to do StPm instead, you can immediately enter [4][6][P] asap, and no G-cancel required.

However, let's say you're playing Wolf and successfully evaded a slow low attack, you can immediately input [2][P]+[K]+[G] for the low side throw without any G-cancel. You won't get an evade attack in this case because that requires the stick to be in neutral when you press [P]+[K]+[G].

*Grins* That's what I get for trying to hold forth when I've never actually tried it, I guess. /versus/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I thought that [G] and crouch dash served the same kind of function during an evade, in that they could cancel failed evades but not sucessful ones. Evidently I was wrong. But crouch dashes CAN cancel a failed evade... right? (From what I gathered, this is a basis of Minami's 'step'...?)

Apologies, katana. I'd suggest you listen to Myke and not me... /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ah, thank you! This probably sounds pathetic, but I had no idea why my evade attacks didn't always work. /versus/images/graemlins/blush.gif I didn't realise that the stick had to be neutral for the evade attack to come out instead of (taking Shun as an example) a [8]or[2][P]+[K]+[G] attack.

*Sighs* I beg the excuse of only having one human opponent to play against, and the fact that this opponent doesn't 'get' the concept of advantage, dodge or crouch dash yet. I tend to get through on rather basic tactics...

Thank you again for correcting my bad information and putting me straight on a couple'a things.

Thanks all, I fully understand the whole concept now, and now I can put the issue to rest. /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif
