How do you deal with low sweep turtles?

Hey, another ultra noob question here...how do you guys deal with low sweep turtles with Vanessa? I had a lot of trouble last night with a Lau who would low sweep me at max range.

If I sabaki him he would move back and do it again, and if I block his low sweep I can't attack because he is too far away. The long distance moves such as 44K+G gets hit by the sweep, and K+G flies over the sweep. I tried other blocking than mid such as the 6K in DS, but it doesn't hit because he's too far away.

Any tips? The guy fought me 5 times in a row and I won only once, it was really frustrating, and I still can't figure out how to deal with this (I suck) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Oh i thought this was a topic about me =)

Anyway a simple thing to do is make him miss the sweep. If he is doing it from max range im sure its not too hard to back up a little and let him whiff the attack. If you manage to sabaki it and he did it again then you should have done 1K+G into 6PKK for 1/3 of his life or more. I bet he stops after you hit him with that a few times. Also you can switch in to OS and dodge the sweep and hit him with 9K+G into PKP.

    DS:
Dodge to his back 3K+G hit throw or 1K+G-->6PKK.
Even at max range 3K+G hit throw should work, if it doesnt 3K should.

    OS:
9K+G should work on block even from max range.

Keep an eye on his back and you'll be find.

If vane blocks lau's sweep will OS [6][6][K][P] float? If not, what should be used to punish? I remember that the flying knee doesn't float crouched opponents very well... I've always wanted to test but didn't know how with the limited dojo options and now that this thread sprung i'm not near my console :(

Yeah, the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif tiger knee doesn't work very well. Intuitively, when I know the opponent is going for a low, I automatically do this move...which only seems to be guarenteed when they're low punching. If they sweep (or Lei's ground thump or Pai's duck and sweep thingy) then there's a good chance the knee goes over them:(

Oh well, at least it looks cool.

    Not sure about the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif though...

A low sweep player with any character, I find a defensive no charge /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif to be effective... It's usually alot quicker than the sweep and knocks them away for a bit of breathing room which you may end up not needing (More space can be bad)

I also like using /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+ /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif-> /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+ /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif at distance or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif-> /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+ /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif close in defensive if you can hit them as they are about to sweep...

Other than that, you can just do little low attack taps ( /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif no combo) , force them to block then do a low throw...

how did you manage NOT to mention DS /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif
(I know its not a highdamage option, but someone who has trouble with sweeps propably needs a simple solution. )

ps. wtf are lowsweep turtles anyway..

Also I'm pretty sure Lau's sweep is half-circ. If you know your opponent is gonna do it, try to start checking stance. It was fighting Jdeviance that made me start checking stance.

JDeviance always (and I mean always) does DM P+K away from the screen when he is at a disadvantage. It was a tedious excercise in stance checking, and supreme delaying the whole time...but im thankful for it.

I have the same habit too :( While i don't necessarily always do p+k afterwards i do tend to evade towards away from the screen :(

Btw I played a lot against lions and shuns this weekend but my idea of using OS [6] [6] [K] [P] as punishment for lows didn't seem to work (no crouch stagger, no float) :( I keep hoping maybe my timing is wrong, srsly can anybody test to confirm?

Naw, it's only on crouch guard sadly. Off the top of my head I know she has /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif to punish block lows in OS. It's up to you what options you want to initiate afterwards. Ya know...I always thought that kinda sucked...but a free mid-kick with an extension to switch into DS with advantage, or stay in OS and have IS mix-ups ain't half bad for blocking a low kick.

I can't think of what the others would be off the top though.

OS Vanessa can punish blocked sweeps with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif (works most of the time, this move usually only misses when you try to interrupt crouching moves during their exe, not recovery). If that doesn't work, you can use /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif (hit) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif

Low kicks that are -14 to -15 can be punished with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif

You know, people who sweep at max range and move away, rince and repeat.

Yeah, I tried the common options - the most obvious one to me was OS /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, but that often flew over the sweep. Also the other obvious solution was /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, but yeah, like Sebo said, it misses a lot of the time for me at max range. Actually at max range a lot of moves miss, and I am never sure how range (especially extreme max range) affects the execution/recovery frames and frame-based games.

But thanks for all the advice guys, I'll go try the other suggestions out and see what works best for me:)

Try doing /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif combo without any intention of hitting with the sabaki after they sweep and get distance... The kick has alot of movement with it when you follow it with the punch, you may end up surprising them and hitting them and hopefully throwing them off their game and into yours...

Fuzzy guard. There's no execuse to get hit with a sweep from max range if your opponent is doing it over and over again. There's much better options, but that's probably the easiest one.

Also, make sure you arent committing to a move, and then getting hit with a sweep. Lau's sweep goes under the beggining of most strings, so if you find yourself rushing the opponent and getting hit every time- you need to change your tactics.
