If you're game changes enough to complain about it by taking 3-4 days off, then I'm not sure you were even consistent to start with. I'm just being honest here. So, my advice would be to keep practicing.

Don't take days off... Keep your skills sharp so, when you need them, they will be second nature.

And for the LOVE OF THE GAME!

while growing sometimes you need to take a few days off to unlearn bad skills. On your off days think about the way you actually want to be playing. Imagine hitting all your moves, actually guessing right against your opponent. You have to be specific with the situation. YOu have to actually play the fight in your mind. I find this is the best thing to do during a break because everyone has off days even professional musicians. If you don't think you have them you're a F'n liar or weren't playing people close enough to your level that day because there is a lower limit to your suckness on a bad day.

Haha, I'm with Tricky... I actually find I usually get better after taking a break to play some other game. I tend to keep all my mental knowledge of the game even after breaks, but taking a break tends to make me lose some of the bad habits that were ingrained into muscle memory.

I agree with Llanfair... either you simply aren't as good as you think, and wouldn't have consistently beaten the people you're losing to anyway. Or, your mental knowledge of the game mechanics isn't up to par, and when you lose some of the muscle memory of your flowcharts, you're not able to reconstruct them quickly when you play again.

Taking time off helps only when you think about the game and try to improve on what you did. I had those day all the time when I was focusing on ranking in the past. This why I took a more aggressive stand on my pai since my lack of action alway killed me and it took alot of off time to think about it and finally do it at long last.

There are other times that you know how to get around the enemy and you are just pushing yourself too hard like I was in ranking matches before when I stopped to think about what I did and relaxed I found myself able to win matches that I couldn't win before. The stress that comes from ranking was something that I felt I didn't need and that is one of the main reasons why I focus on player matches more now then ever, worrying about ranking so much was killing me and having fun in player matches relieves me of all that stress so I can relax during the matches that much more.

    you and me both ese.

I agree with everything else you said except, you actually can regain your flowchart muscle memory fairly quickly long as your break isn't tooo long. There's actually some phsych research showing that you learn something a lot faster the second time around than you do the first time so it's actually good to take breaks from the game once in a while.

Thinking about the game theoretically is great to do when on breaks though. I'm on a break now cuz my wrist is all fucked up from playing this game too much last week.

Well, like life in general, it just makes me reconsider it's worth: it's all worthless if you get down to it.

You misunderstood me. I was saying if you understand the flow-charts mentally, then you can't lose them, all the information is still there and comes back quickly, even if you lose the muscle memory (and you're right about all the reasons it comes back quickly). But if someone just plays by instinct, and never actually thought about why a particular series of moves is good, then if they lose the muscle memory of that sequence and they lose the timing, it won't come back until they play around and find something else that "just works". (This is, once again, why people study frame data to pick up the mental side of the game, it's much easier and more effective than learning basic sequences from watching what hits in a real match.)

Sometimes you lose because you are not really better than the other player, even if you really believe that you are better. Just remember that winning the match is what counts, not winning it in your head.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbs_up.gif agreed. I wonder how instinct plays a role later in the game. Does it lead to instinct about yomi?

I don't know if instinct is the right word. Sirlin talks about this in his "Playing to Win" book as presence of mind. Quote: "Presence of Mind is the ability to see all the moments of a short-lived situation as they go by, often accompanied by the sensation that time has slowed down. This is possible when the situation has grown familiar to you and your brain is able to filter out all the unnecessary elements leaving only a few simple cues."

Think about if you just got hit by a low punch. Good players know that's a basic nitaku setup, and immediately expect a mid or throw to occur. A bad player, will just think "oh no, I'm at disadvantage, what could my opponent possibly do next?". It's not instinct so much as familiarity, and the ability to instantly filter out all but a few options, and then you don't have to think as hard to decide how to defend against those few options.

maybe i wasn't consistant...? but don't u'd think you'd have trouble getting ur skill back too if you played GoW, DoA4, and tons of other games those days you have been off?
I just have trouble somtimes when im off for half a week or more in VF5, but, personally, i'm pretty sure i was still one of the best with my characters. i may be a little biased about it but you'd get that way too, if you only lost twice to ur own character and for every day you got on, after hrs of playing, you'd only lose twice, at most.

i'm not one of the best lei fei users at all. I'm 9 dan but finally improving consistently again after being lazy and getting worse. I would say i'm on pace to reach 10th dan in a few weeks (it should be noted that i will only play a handful of ranked games a day as i prefer to improve my game in the dojo and player matches then bust out on a weekend with a bunch of rated all in one or 2 days) but to the prior posts point. If i miss one day i can tell the difference in my game, absolutely. If i miss 2-3 days i have gotten worse, and need 1-2 maybe 3 days to get back where i was. I realize a lot of people don't have this problem, but i think the opposite side of that for me is that i get better and better, and don't really see a cap on how good i can get, if i put in the time i can be the best. Unfortunately, i will never put in that kind of time, and people that get better quicker than me and don't detoriate as quickly will be better. But it is nice to feel like i could be invincible, if i was 17 or 18 again or even 21 and in college and not working. Lol. I'm 28 and life is calling.

Sebo, you really don't strike me the deterministic type, and that's probably the single most depressing thing I've ever read on these forum (lol).
