Hello...... I was thinking.... how many characters each of you guys play (to play = to be decent at)? Do you even think it's possible to specialize (and I really mean SPECIALIZE) in more than 1-2? Any opinions on that matter?

from what i've heard, ice-9 plays all of the characters as though he specializes in each one, so i guess it can be done.
there's no reason why someone can't be highly skilled with more than 2 characters, providing the practice is put in.

    Dear,

May be specialized in different character need you yourself to be that kind of person to ultimate the technique given to that special character. Say, if you play Shun well, you can't be a very very aggressive one as many of his moves are so.....well.....indirect.

What I want to specify is, the technique of different character can be "learnt" by practise, however, the "Soul" of that charcter cannot be "learnt". You should "shift your mind-set" for differnt character in high level playing, in my opinion.

This apply to the real martial art also.

If you just want to see brilliant combos and skills, practice can done the trick, however, a real and flashy and fantastic player will make the surrounding feel good and fun.

A "feel good" match with Shun player:
    - after he done the d/f+p+g, all the surrounding and me think he will follow with Shun's chouwan combo, however, he do the following:
    - chouwan(still chouwan) --> b,b+K --> d,d --> DRINK!!!
    - I use wolf. knock him on ground, and done my usual trick- d+p+g --> any throw; after I drap him up, he just....DRINK, and my throw of course whiff, and, it's his turn then...

You see, a shun player may not use a lot chouwan, but he get use of shun's specialty---Drink to avoid damage and insult opp....I do like to play with him instead of those "always-perfectly-place-the-same-combos-on-you-and-you-can-do-nothing" guy.

    Should I clarify it enough??

    Sorry for disturbing....hehe.

Haha...that's not true. I can probably speak for others, but if Jeff's sub-characters (ummm...any character other than Kage) can beat my Lau consistently, I'll admit my loss (hey Jeff, do you wanna make a bet? I'll buy you a dinner!). On the other hand, my sub-characters won't beat his Kage either.

So...to give you my opinion, one or maybe two are the maximum one can specialize.

If two players are at the same level, one who uses his main character against other's sub-character almost always wins. This is from my past observation. If I find myself losing to several characters one person uses, the other person is simply better as a player.

    lol...i'd say that's it exactly

It's not as if as soon as your brain can't handle data for more than one or two characters...get to any level you like with one, and start learning the next. The only issue is time; time to learn, and time to practice what's already been learned. Just like you have the ability to remember different moves that you've learned for one character, you can remember, and get the feel, for different characters.

I, however, am a slow learner, and have learned characters at about the rate of one per year...kudos to anybody who masters all 12, for I shall not be playing quite that long :)

i agree with shota at this point
One or two are the maximum a player should be able to specialize....n if the guy can specialize at three characters, well...he's a freak! /images/icons/mad.gif

    Me?
I suck...I am sure I only specialize in one character. Sure, I can use multiple characters to a certain effectivness, but if my sub character cannot beat the guy, time to bring in the pro.

Btw, I was shocked when I read Jeff being able to specialise in all characters. As far as I know from what I have read, he only plays Kage, Shun, Lau, Sarah.

    The rest, I don't know.

I play two, Aoi my main and Shun my former main but it was just too hard to win against mashers so I swithed to Aoi. All hell who cares what I think I suck.
