...use person to person file sharing software (other than mIRC), such as Kazaa, Morpheus, Limewire, etc?

    I use Kazaa.

/me kicks empnova in the neck hard !!

What kind of worthless spam is this! Stop using stupid gamefaqs leader topic headers with the ". . . ." finish sentence. Your wasting peoples time! and since you like to keep everything topic related, I dont give a shit about spyware. Go back to gamefaqs and pretend to be useful !! /versus/images/graemlins/mad.gif

    What're you, taking a poll?

Since this hasn't been talked about on here that I can recall, I'll see what ppl think of my tiers -

Top tier: Kazaa Lite - easy interface, tons of ppl use it so there are tons of hits on your searches, does multithreading (downloads from more than one source for each file so that you get the best possible speed) ... it also has some nice helper apps bundled with the K-Lite install package, like the speedup utility which constantly tries to sniff out more connections for you to download from. What I like best is that there's very little or no bullshit. You just see results and double click them. There are no hubs or servers or sharing requirements or chatting or popups or ads.

Second Tier: Winmx - not so hot for movies or software, but great for mp3's. Also has the cleanest user interface out of all the filesharing progs and is bullshit free. Also multithreads downloads, I tend to get really good speeds. No sharing requirements to work around if you don't want to get raped on your outgoing bandwidth.

These are the only two I use regularly. That means everything else is third tier /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif (though I'm seriously considering giving e-donkey a shot)

    Things I don't use:

Grokster - with a patch you can make this ad and spyware free. It works fine and is exactly like kazaa, so there's no reason not to just go with kazaa lite.

Direct Connect - arguably the best place to find software, and probably has a ton of movies and obscure stuff too. If you can't find something elsewhere, you can use direct connect. The problem is that the last version of DC that I tried was really awful. Simple shit like right click didn't work and caused graphical errors. Sharing was heavily enforced. You had to connect to hubs and there were huge lists of them and you needed to use a hack or share gigs and gigs of stuff just to connect to the good ones and stay on them. When you're on a hub, only the stuff from other ppl on the hub is available, which means over 90 percent of the rest of the people using DC are NOT available to download from... unless you want to fool around with jumping back and forth. Downloads died and didn't auto-resume or auto-search for more sources, so you had to constantly babysit it. There's no multithreading. You had to deal with a retarded irc-type interface complete with server rules and the whole IRC structure. I don't fire up my filesharing program to socialize, for christ's sake. Anyway.... my experience was shitty but I have heard that the latest version has undergone a complete revamp and is MUCH more stable. I don't care though, I don't want to deal with the lame hub system.

Bearshare - not that many ppl use it, and has spyware bundled. No need to bother.

Limewire - fluffy mac-like user interface. It looks pretty cool and is easy enough to use, but I couldn't find much of what I wanted, and it had a tendency to chug/hang/freeze. I think it multithreads downloads though and allows for download links to be shared. I could be wrong, it's been a while and I didn't give it too much of a trial run.

Things I don't use but I hear are good:
EDonkey/EMule/whatever - you can give download links to other people with it, that's a great feature. It's also gaining in popularity. You can probably find some good stuff on this if you aren't satisfied with the filesharing apps above.

I usually use Kazaa. I download US TV (almost exclusively).

CreeD -- remember me talking about my connection? I hit 1MB/s this morning. I thought "It'll never last" so I went and brushed me teeth and washed my face. Came back, and I had downloaded a 300MB file. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

    I hate you.

You should do something useful with that... what is it? 10mb/s... upload.
i.e. host movies or something else. Do you get any free space?

hey Direct Connect isn't so bad. DC++'s interface is fine and dandy, its just the way hubs are run with their GB limits, and other funky rules. But hey...if you've got a fat connection and a big hard drive I guess its paradise for you!

I only get like 5MB free space or something.
If I can ever get a secure FTP server for Linux, I'll probably host movies. My 2nd PC is just too old and doesn't have enough HD space. I'd need to get the movies in the first place. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've been noticing I get nice speeds off distros lately. 275kb/s isn't unheard of.

And yes, it's 100mb down 10mb up if I remember correctly. People get 100kb/s from me on Kazaa regularly.

Sharman (the company that owns Kazaa) recently had a server that was hosting all of the install files for Kazaa.

The transfer rate was literally 25mb per second.

There is also a T3 server out of Chicago (somewhere in IL), and a very fast T1 server in PA somewhere, each providing nearly 10 thousand files at 15mbps. The only problem is that when I did the "find other files from user" Kazaa locks up due to so many files being processed and listed. I downloaded a ton of archived magazines (all legal), almost 10 years worth, in about 2 minutes.
